Description

Dec. 5, 1933. o. WIESENER WINDOW SASH OPERATING DEVICE Original Filed Oct. 23, 1931 I nvenlor @770 MEJE/VE/E.
flltorncy Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES WINDOW SASH OPERATING DEVICE Otto Wiesener, New York, N. Y.
Application October 23, 1931, Serial No. 570,720
' Renewed December 14, 1932 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in windows, and more particularly it pertains to a sash operating means.
It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide means whereby a pair of oppositely moving window sashes may be retained in open or partially open position and automatically moved to closed position under certain conditions.
The invention is herein illustrated as embodied in a device for automatically closing window sashes in case of rain, and in this embodiment it is illustrated in the drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing a window with the sashes in partially opened frame and movable therein there are two sashes 11 and 12. The sash 11 is the upper sash and. the sash 12 is the lower sash and these sashes are so mounted that they move in opposite directions to open or closed position. The lower sash 12 is provided with an auxiliary weight in the form of a bar or the like 13 which may be supported from brackets or the like 14 secured to the bottom rail of the sash 12. This weight serves to move the sash to closed position from any open position, and will be of the necessary weight to accomplish the purpose intended.
Means is provided for holding the sash 12 in open position against the action of the weight 13,
and in the present embodiment of this invention this means comprises a cordor the like 16 secured as at 17 to the sash and extending over pulleys 18 and 19, and connected to a weight 20. Interposed in this cord 16, there is a rupturable element 21 which is preferably moisture absorbent and of such a character as to rupture or disintegrate when moisture has been absorbed thereby. This member 21 is connected to a cord or the like 23 which in turn passes around pins or the like 24 carried by the window frame 10.
As thus far described it willbe obvious that when the element 21 absorbs sufficient moisture to cause it to rupture, the influence of the weight 20 will be released with respect to the sash 12, and the sash 12 will move to closed position under the influence of the weight 13.
Means is also provided to move the sash 11 to its closed position and this means includes a cable 30 connected to the sash 11 as at 31 and passing over the pulleys 18 and 19 and connected as at 32 to the weight 20. It will be noted that this cable 30 has some slack 34 therein so that as the weight 20 is released by the element 21 and the sash 12 moves to closed position, the weight will have an initial movement until the slack 34 is taken up. This initial movement will be sufficient to create a sudden jerk upon the upper sash 11 which will be sufficient to start the same after which the weight 20 will continue to move the same to closed position.
When it is desired to reset the device, the window sashes are moved to the desiredopen position and a new element 21 is connected in the manner heretofore described.
The device is particularly useful in retaining window sashes, in open positionand permitting of their automatic removal to closed position in case of rainstorm, to automatically cause the closing of the window sashes.
While the device has been herein disclosed in a preferred form, it is to be herein understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An automatic window sash operating means comprising in combination, a pair of window sashes movable in opposite directions to open and closed positions, a weight, means connecting said weight with one of said sashes to support the weight, and means connecting the weight with the other of said sashes whereby to operate the sash to their closed positions when'the weight is released from the first mentioned sash.
2. An automatic window sash operating means comprising in combination, a pair of window sashes movable in opposite directions to open and closed positions, a weight, means connecting said weight with one of said sashes to support the weight, and means connecting the weight with the other of said sashes whereby to operate the sash to their closed positions when the weight is released from the first mentioned sash, said last mentioned connectingmeans including a flexible member having slack therein whereby the weight is capable of an initial movement before imparting its force to the second mentioned sash.
