DOOBFLIFTING DEVICE.
Application filed March 30 1923.
Be it known that I, Fnnmgnrex Hr W n BUR. a eitizen f the United States of America, of Binghaniton, in th county of Br wne n the State f New York. have inVentedheW and useful Liiproveinents 1n Door-Lifting DeViCPS. Of Which the f llowmg taken in onneetion wrth the aeeonr panyingdrawings. is a full, clean and ex- :u-t. description. v
This invention relates t a d or liftnt; lB lCQ adapted to he, used more iziiii 'jiilfiil) in cOnnPPilQir with 5 'lllgi Il; door: for garages and analogous buildings where the doors are usuall wide and li -;1\ and are more 01 less liable to Sm; to .suvh an extent as to interfere with their free operation unless some. provision is made f r supporting and lifting th m when opened.
Tln main Object f this invention 1& to provide simple and etlieient means for supporting and lifting the d r clear of the garage floor r approach thereto as the door iS opened and closed, and partivulurl) when opened so as to avoid fricti n with the floor if the (li' i r pens iliWaldlY and t avoid friction with the appr mh of sn w and ive thereon if the door opens outwardly.
In other Words, I have sought to hinge the door to the frame in such manner that it may he moved vertically relatireh to the frame by suitable 1 e1atin; means provided therel'or which also permits th do r t drop against or in close proxinnt t the sill when cl sed.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the device will he hrought out in the following deseription In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a face view of an cuitwardly swinging do r and adj-went mjirtion of the frame, partly in seetioir showing a niodified form of my invention in which the door may he raised wh n l sed preparatory t pening the same Figure 2 is a rertieal sectional view, partly brok n away. taken on line 4-l. Figure 1.
Figure is an enlarged fi 'fi nal \"PW taken on line 5-5 Figure 1' Figure 4 is an enlarged detzul .ser-tional vi w, partly br k n '.\W:\ talren on line Figure 1.
In Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, is shown a Serial No 628,803
I. t d or frame f:2 of a garage or other huilding "..1 for receiving n'door 23 whrli is hinged along one of its upright dges to the adjheent Side of the fluiii by hinge seetions and :'J5- and a pivotal pin or holt --26 extending through r gistering openings in the seetions i-l}- find ..5r
The lower end f the hinge bolt r liilitle 26 is seated in the sill as "Z7- and has it: llpl fl tl l l extended some distance ahore the uprwruiost hinge Sectihn if t permit the door to he itiifie tl a llllllt ftl (lisfzin 'e clear of the sill or floor Without (liS- engaging the hinge sections from the holt.
This door is adapted t swing outwardly from its elosed position against the lintel as -2$- and is provided with loel; pins E3U find J projecting res iiectively Iielorr its lower edge and ahove its upper edge near the free upright edge opposite that Which is hinged to the door frairie The lower loeking nieniher is adapted to enter 1| sooket -31 in' the Sill f fl or 2T- while the upper locking member I30 adapted to enter a similar socket -332 in the upper side of the lint'el -JS for holding the door in its closed positi n ilgilillsi flfig'irlrgnt fil A bracket 3?- is hinged at one end to h upright holt Z6 to swing horizonall and is pref rably l iifur ate 'l to n rmally rest u H ll suprmrting sevti ns 3+ which are hinged to the adjacent upright member of the door frame and embrace ihe rod or bolt i' as shown in Figure Th olilmSite oi iiinPl end Of the hracket -3 extends from the bolt 26 suhstantiallr half way across the face of the door and is held in close proximity to said doo by a guide plate -I" F which is secured to the door to f rm therewith, 1t lengthwise slot of suflieient vertical height t permit the do r to he Ifiised and lowered relatively to the l. raeket.
A hand lever 3 is piv ted intermediate its ends at -F1T to the door and has its nd opp site the handle c nnected hy a, link 3$ t the inner end f the hrfujh'et the arm of the l v r h tWeeii the link -:IS- and fllhl llli 3T- heing nsiderahly sh rter than the handle p rti n of the lever t enahle th d r to he raised easily by the operator.
That is, assuming that the door is closed and its lockin members -Q9- and 30- are seated in their respective sockets -3land -32 then by raising the handle end of the lever -36 upwardly will cause a corresponding upward movement of the door relatively to the frame and bracket suflicient to withdraw the locking members 29 and -30 from their respective sockets 3l and -32 whereupon the elevated door with the lever thereon may be swung upon its hinge connections to an open position with its lower edge a considerable distance above the approach or sill.
The link 38- normally stands in a substantially vertical position while the lever -36- is adapted to rock not only between the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 3, but. beyond to approximately the vertical plane of the link --38- thereby bringing the pivot or fulcrum 37 nearly or directly over the pivotal connection as -39 between said lever and link.
I claim:
1. The combination with a door frame and a door hinged along one of its upright edges to the frame, the hinge connection including an upright pivotal bolt, a bracket lying in close proximitv to one face of the door and having one end hinged to the pivotal bolt and its other end extended to a point substantially midway between the opposite upright edges of the door, a guide plate secured to the door and impressing the inner end of the bracket to hold the same against lateral swinging movement relatively to the door, said guide being of sufficient vertical height to permit the door with the guide thereon to be raised and lowered relatively to the bracket, means for supporting the outer end of the bracket against downward movement, and means operatively connected to the inner end of the bracket and to the door and operable at will for raising and lowering the door relatively to said bracket.
2. The combination with a door frame and a door, a pivotal bolt extending vertically along one of the upright edges of the door, hinge sections connected respectively to the door and to the frame, the hinge sec tions on the door being journaled on the pivotal bolt, a bracket hinged to the pivotal bolt and extended partially across the door in proximity thereto. a hand lever pivoted to the door between the upright edges there of, and a link connecting said lever with the bracket whereby movement of the lever about its fulcrums on the door will be transmitted to said door for raising and lowering the same.
3. The combination with a door frame and a door hinged to the frame to swing about a vertical axis, a bracket hinged to the frame to swing about a vertical axis and extended part way across the door, a link connected to the bracket, and a. hand lever pivoted to the door and operatively con nected to the link to swing about a horizontal axis for raising and lowering the door.
4. The combination with a door frame and a door hinged to the frame to swing about a vertical axis, a bracket hinged to the frame to swing about a vertical axis and extended part way across the door, a link connected to the bracket, and a hand lever pivoted to the door and operatively connected to the link to swing about a horizontal axis for raising and lowering the door, and a guide on the door embracing a portion of the bracket for holding the door and bracket against relative swinging movement.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14 day of March, 1923.
FREDERICK H. WILBUR.
