(Cl. 292139) This invention relates to and has for an 'object theprovision of an improved type of door stop capable of being attached to the lowermost f rail of a door for engagement with the floor and 5*to be set, as forinstance, by foot pressure to pro- "vide a predetermined friction for preventing the "swinging of the door, but additionally provided -"With means whereby an excessive pressure on the door, as by wind or otherwise, will, instead of lO slightly moving the door, tend tomore firmly lock thedoor against movement by increasing the friction exerted by the stop on the floor. To-this end the invention contemplates the provision of a simple, durable and economical device 15-which, as in the case of other stops, may beset and released by foot pressure, and includes a swivel stop having a friction shoe thereon for engagement with the floor which is caused 'to --'--swing on its axis in one or the other direction 20 and is sensitiveto the'slightest movement of the door-in either direction for increasing the friction and thereby preventing the opening or clos-;--
ing of the door when the stop is set.

, In the accompanying drawing I have shown a preferred form of invention, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my improved door stop operatively positioned on a door.

Briefly described, my invention includes a suitable casing A adapted to be firmly secured to a door D, a plunger C vertically slidable in the casing A, a stop B pivotally carried on the lower end of plunger C, and a friction latch E associated with the plunger C for purposes hereinafter described.
The casing A is preferably formed of sheet metal and is provided with a body portion I having a rectangular recess 2 formed therein and openat the top and bottom thereof. The stopv B is formed with a pair of similar spacedlugs 20, 20 which straddle the lower end of plunger C and are pivotally secured to said plunger by means of a transverse pin 21 held in bores 22 formed in the lugs 20. The stop B has ss a shoe 23 whichis laterally extended from the lugs 20, 20 in opposite directions and is formed with a re-entrant groove 24 longitudinally thereof, whereby a frictionshoe 25 may be detachablygs secured to the supporting shoe 23. the friction shoe 25 is provided with a re-entrant rib 26 on its upper surface adapted to slide into' and inter-lock with the groove 24 in the shoe,23.
The side walls 10 of casing A are bent at 27, 27 into horizontal position to form guides for the plunger C, and the lugs 20, 20 of the shoe B slide between and respectively engage the inner sides of the walls 10, 10 so that the movement of plunger C istruly vertical. The outer end of memberE is provided with a foot-piece 28 and the outer extremity 29 of the slot 18 in said member E is adapted to frictionally engage the outer edge 30 of plunger C so as to'bin'd said plunger and hold the plunger at selected elevation s against the tension of" spring F, which tends to V elevate the plunger at all'times. n 1 In operation, when the device is attached to the door D the tension of spring F will automatically elevate the plunger C to its uppermost POSitiO L-JL when the latch E is depressed, permitting the free j To this 'end 90 movement of the plunger. Pressure the portion 7 of said plunger, however, will lower the plunger and the friction shoe into contact with the floor when and to an extent as may be desired. The depression of plunger C will also correspondingly depress the plunger E against the] tension of spring and cause the latch Eto frictionally engagethe'outer edge of the plunger and to so bind the plunger that it will not of itself be restored to inoperative position.
'It will be observed that the lower surface 31, of friction shoe 25 is but slightly arcuate, and the H thrust of the shoe onto the floor is at points cen trally of the shoe when t e plunger is depressed.
' Should the friction between the shoe 25 and'the floor be insufficient to prevent the swinging of the door due to a sudden gust of wind or pressure accidentally applied thereto, the shoe 23 with the friction member 25 will be caused to rock on the axis 2101 the shoe and a corresponding lateralv portion of the shoe will engage the floor.
:As shown'in the drawing, the lateraledges of the shoe are at a greater distance from the axis 21 than is the central portion thereof. ,Therefore the shoe will act as 'a cam for increasing the friction applied to the floor when the door tends to swing in either direction'after the plunger is set toia nominally operative position.
In Fig. 2 I have shown an are 32 which is concentric with the axis 21 of the shoe for illustrating the fact thatthe lateral portions 33, 33 of the friction shoe-25 are or greater radius than the arc 32. For instance, if, as shown in Fig. 2, pressure is, applied to the doorv from the right hand side the shoe 23 will rock slightly'on its axis 21 :.in a counter clockwise direction. If on the other hand pressure is applied from the opposite side {of the door the shoe will rock slightly in a clockwise direction, thus moving one or the other 01 the lateral portions 33 of the shoe intofrictional engagement with thefloor, and thegreater the movement of the door, the greater will be the friction applied to'the floor, thus effectively pre venting any but a very slight movement of the door when the plunger C is operatively set.
The plunger 0 may be readily and quickly re--- leased from engagement with the floor by depressing the latch E and in such case the spring F is efiective for elevating the plunger C and the shoe 23 to aposition of complete disengagement with the floor.
The skirt 5 of the casing serves to protect the shoe against accidental contact with furniture, cleaning apparatus, and the like, which might tend to break or impair the shoe or to completely dislodge the friction member 25 therefrom.
What I claim is: 7
1. A device of the character described comprising in combination with a door, a casing attached to a side of the door adjacent the floor, a plunger vertically slidable insaid casing, a spring normally urging said plunger intoinoperative posi-' tion, astop pivotally supported on the lower end of said plunger, a friction shoe carried on the lower end of said stop for engagement with the floor, and a lock engaging said spring and said plunger means for locking said plunger and said sh oerin operative positionwhen the plungeris depressed, and for elevating said plunger when the lock is depressed. 2. A door stop comprising a casing attachable to a door and having a vertically disposed chamber therein, a plunger slidably held in said chamber, a friction shoe .pivotally carried on said,
