To allwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Lnwrs, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Westbrook, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Game Pieces; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

Fig. 4 a similar view, with the ball resting in a socket or recess in the game board.
This invention relates to improvement in game pieces, and particularly to pieces used in games comprising a game board with a plurality of sockets or depressions, into which balls may be rolled by tilting the board. In some cases, game pieces have included a ball on which a figure rests, so that, as the ball is rolled, the figure carried by it will be moved. The object of this invention is to provide a game piece, including a ball so arranged that instead of having the game piece rest upon the ball, the ball impinges against one wall of the piece, so as to move the same, and, at the same time, provide means whereby a ball may enter a recess or socket, so as to locate the game piece, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a game piece 5 of any approved design,- herein shown as a cone. The base of the cone is partially closed by an annular flange 6, forming an opening 7. Within the piece is a ball 8, adapted to rest upon a game board 9 through the opening 7, and adapted to engage with the inner wall of the game piece, the width of the flange 6 being such that as the ball rolls forward, it will just clear the inner edge of the flange, so that,

as it rolls forward, it will move the piece over the surface of the board. These game pieces may be formed from paper, celluloid, or other suitable material providing a smooth under-surface, which will readily slide over the smooth surface of a game board. hen the ball rolls into a notch 10, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, it forms a latch, so to speak, for locating the game piece, as the ball is larger in diameter than the diameter of the opening 7 so that a portion of its periphery enters the notch or recess 10. As the ball enters one of the notches 10, it impinges against one edge of the opening, and by such impingement moves the game piece forward and locates it concentric with the notch in which the ball rests, at which time the ball completely fills the opening in the game piece and the mouth of the notch.
It will be noted that the diameter of the ball is less than the height of the game piece, so that the game piece rests upon its lower edge and will be pushed about as the ball rolls, but does not rest upon'the top of the ball.
It is obvious that the form of the game piece may be varied without departing from my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the design shown.
I claim: v
A game piece comprising a chamber and flat base formed with an opening, a ball within said chamber larger in diameter than the diameter of said opening, said ball adapted to rest upon a surface through said opening and bear upon the inner wall of the said chamber, and adapted to partially pass through the opening, so as to engage the inner edges of the base, whereby the game piece may be located in position concentric with a notch in a game-board.
