7 II, I Ill/fl I v x Patented Nov. 28, 1933 STATESd THRESHOLD Francis J. Plym, Niles, Mich, assignor to The Kawneer Company, Niles, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application March 20, 1931.
Serial No. 523,981
4 Claims. (01. 20-69 This invention relates to thresholds, and more in particular to such a construction adapted to be placed below or under a door or other closure and adapted to receive the closure and form a 5 weather-tight seal therewith.
JAmong the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel threshold construction adapted to be mounted on a floor or other base directly below a door or closure, and adapted to receive a rib or flange mounted on such closure, when the same is in shunt or closed position.
The present construction is provided with grooves or ribs running longitudinally thereof for the purpose or" preventing the entrance of rain, snow and the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a threshold construction formed or cast with supporting legs whereby the same may be constructed in one piece without the possibility of play or shifting between the support and the threshold.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a threshold provided with grooves or corrugations on both the upper and lower sides thereof whereby to limit the amount of material necessary in the formation of the structurewithout the elimination of the necessary strength. This construction further lessens the cost of material and permits a cheaper construction.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of the threshold plate with under-cut grooves or channels forming anchoring means when the threshold is mounted upon a concrete floor or other filler.
A further object of the invention is the provision of additional anchoring means associated or engaging the supporting legs of the structure for suitably supporting and retaining the threshold in the filler or material of the floor. By reason of this construction, all retention is from the under-side of the threshold plate, thus eliminating screws or other retaining means passing through the plate.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efiiciency, economy, and ease of assembly; and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will later more fully appear, and are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangements of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change, and comprehends other details and constructions, without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a fragmentary viewin perspective,
disclosing the invention in position in the doorway or other closure or a building.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional View of the threshold construction disclosed in Fig. i.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view similar to Fig. 2, but disclosing an alternate construction;
Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the embodiment selected to illustrate the invention in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a threshold plate 1 adapted to form a base below '30" other closure is shut, a weather-tight seal exists between the interlocking flange or rib 8 and the threshold. Screws or the like 10 are adapted to retain the plate 9 on the lower edge of the door or closure.
The central portion 3 of the threshold is provided on its upper and lower surfaces with grooves or corrugations 11 and 12, respectively, the upper corrugations or grooves being designed for pre venting the entrance of rain, snow, or the like. These grooves 11 further prevent the passing in WC of mud or dirt, as it provides an excellent scraper. Should water or dirt find its way upon the upper surface or" the plate, it will be retained in the grooves, the water being prevented from flowing or travelling through to the interior unless a sufiicient quantity is forced through and. fills all the corrugations. As clearly disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the threshold is formed with integral supporting legs 13 whereby the entire construction may be formed of one piece and as a unit. Suitable retaining means such as screws or the like 14 are provided for retaining the threshold to the floor or base. Although such retaining means are disclosed as passing through the central or raised portion 3 of the threshold, it is to be understood that such retaining means may be placed in any suitable or convenient position, including in the sides or flanges 4 and 5.
In Figure 3 is disclosed an alternate construe tion of threshold adapted primarily for use where the floor 15 is constructed of concrete or the like,
or where a filler is provided beneath the threshold. The outer construction of the threshold 1 is similar to that disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, and comprises a central or raised portion 3 and sides or downwardly extending flanges 4 and 5 Grooves or corrugations 11 are provided in the upper surface of the plate. The undersurface of the plate is provided with under-cut grooves or channels 16, intermediate a plurality of supporting members or legs 1'7. These undercut grooves or channels 16 provide suitable retaining means for anchoring the threshold to the plastic filler or concrete of the floor. Additional retaining means comprise wires or other anchors 18 passing through openings 19 in the legs or supports 1'7. These wires or anchors become embedded in the plastic composition or concrete of the floor. By this construction, no exterior retaining means such as screws or the like are necessary for attaching and retaining the threshold to the base or floor.
Although I have disclosed in Fig. 2 but two legs or supporting members, and in Fig. 3 three supporting members, it is to be understood that any suitable number may be provided on the threshold, as desired.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim:
1. A threshold construction for a door or other closure, comprising a member provided on its upper and lower surface with corrugations extending longitudinally thereof and formed with outwardly and downwardly sloping flanges, a. bead along one longitudinal edge for receiving a member on the door to provide a weather-tight closure, and supporting legs formed integral with the under surface of said member at the upper portion of said flanges.
2. A threshold comprising a metal plate corrugated on its upper and lower surface and having a longitudinally extending rib along one edge thereof to provide a groove therebelow for receiving a flanged plate on a closure member to form a weather-tight seal therebetween when said closure is in closed position, and legs formed on said plate for supporting the same.
3. A threshold comprising a member provided with a corrugated upper and lower surface, said lower corrugations providing an anchoring means, and integral legs formed on its under surface providing a support therefor, and anchoring means associated with said legs and embed\ ded in the material of the floor for additionally retaining the member in engagement with the floor.
4. A threshold comprising a metal plate having corrugations on its upper and lower surface, [00 the corrugations on the upper surface being staggered in relation to the corrugations on the lower surface, said upper corrugations providing both a scraper and a means to prevent the entrance of water etc., and said lower corrugations 105.
providing anchoring means.
