Description

WILLIAM E. SNAMAN, or ALLEGHENY, i. ni\nisvi,viiiviii.
Doon Fonsiniawfanits,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SNAMAN, a citizen of the United States OfAmerica, residing at Allegheny, in the` county of Alle,-
gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Doors for Sidewalks, of which the following is a speciiication, `reference being hadV thereinto the accompanying drawing This invention relates to `doors for sidewalks, and the invention has for its object to provide an air and water proof door that will lie flush with the surfaces of fapavement or i,
sidewalk.
^ inexpensive dooigwhich will avoid un ue o bstructions or raised surfaces in a sidewalk,l said door ,being of a. novel construction,`
wherein prevention is made against leakage through crevices surrounding the door edges.
ln this connection, my improved door is particularly design-ed to be used as a'scuttle door a manhole covering, ahatch way'covering or a trap door, -the door being constructed whereby it may be made air tight, water proof and free from all danger of injuryby ordinary use. To this end, I have oo nstructed a novel door frame adapted to' be -located in a sidewalk or pavement, the Iframe providing a gutter lthat can be easily "drained or cleaned, thus pifeventingwater, dirt and' in the sidewalk-of stone, `concrete' or 'other' material.
The detail construction enteringiiito my invention will be hereinafter more fully described vandthen specifically pointed out in the appended claims.-
Referring to the drawing forming part of this speciiicatioii, like numerals of reference designateA corresponding parts .throughout the-several views, in which: 4 4

view, Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive' aredetail secq tional views ofv door fraines, illustrating various modiiicationsof my invention, Fig: 7 is' a detail sectional view of a door .frame illustratuing a novel form. 'of hinge wherein the door supported slightly above a sidewalk, v Fig. 8 is a similar view illustrating a door supported 'flush with a sidewalk, F ig. 9 is a V detail sectional view of a portion of a sidewalk illustrating the manner of anchoring a hinge therein, Fig. 1() is a vdetail sectional view of two doors illustrating the manner iny which an entire sidewalk caribe constructed vof hinged sections.
kIn the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates a hatch way oi" chamber locatedinv the side# walk 2, and coimtersunk in tlie'sidewalk 2v' is a rectangular metallic frame 3 constructed of angle iron. Upon the frame 3 within the sidewalk l arrange a rectangular gutter 4 which is si'ibstaiitially channel-shaped in 'cross section, the inner sides 5 of said frames being of a less rdepth than ,the'outer sides The gutter 4 is provided with a therefrom. Siiitably secured tothe inner sides -of the gutter are hinges 7 vided with gaskets 1() of a resilient material such as rubbensaid gaskets resting upon the The meeting edge' inner sides ,5 of ,the frame 3v and providing a said hinges carrying. doors'Sand 9 adapted tofall inwardly.A l The underneath sides of the doors 8 and' 9 arepr of the door 9 isl provided with adepending cliannel-shaped metallic strip 11.
The strip 11 is adapted to -rec'eive an angle iron -14 carriedmb f the ineetingedge of the door S and if desi'ra le a resilient strip 15 can be located. in the bottom of the channel-shaped strip 11 to provide a positive. connection of Athe two Adoors and cushion thefdoorS in said strip. 'The ends of the vdoors 8 and 9 overlving the frame 3 will irmly support the meeting edges of the doors, thereby dispensing with the ordinary bar commonly used for supporting the meetingedges. The novel manner in 4which the. meeting edges are connected together prevents tliedo'ors from saggingand gettiiigiout of alinement with the level of the pavement. The doors are rendered air tight by employing the gasket 10 and the resilient strip 15, while the channel-shaped frame 3 ico 'tends Within close proximity to the topoi y clearance l241: tor the hinged doors.
.drame 26, said ira-me having its horizontal -enter the passage way ggd,
and Vchannel-shaped strip prevents water om entering the passage way or chamber I w rich is normally closed by the doors S and 9.
lt will be observed that the horizontal i flange 16 of the frame 3 projects beyond the frame 4, thus more biirmly anchoring the traine 3 inthe side walk or pavement 2.
ln Fig. 2 oi the drawing, l have illustrated a slight modification of my invention wherein l have dispensed with the channel-shaped trame fr and employed a frame constructed of angle bars ,said bars having their horizontal flanges 18, protruding a suliicient distance into the side walk or pavement 2 to provide a firm anchorage. The sidewalk or pavement 24 is recessed as at 19, -to clear the movement of the hinge 7. ln this view, I still retain. the frame 3, but as illustrated inremaining iigures of the drawing, namely the Figs. 3 to 9 inclusive, l dispense with said frame.' y mother modification ot' my invention 'is illustrated in. Fig. 4 of the drawings, where l provide the doors with angle irons 20, having strips otresilient material- 2l adapted to engage the angle bars l?, the strips el: resilient material serving as weather strips.
in Fig. 5 of the drawing, l have illustrated another modification wherein the frame 22 of the passage way or compartment l e);-
oi the sidewalk .2 and carries the hinges for supporting the doors. rlhe frame 22 provided with. ordinary Z-bars 23, to `n'ovide ill slight modiiication of this construction is illustrated. in Fig. 6 wherein the Z-bars are dispensed with and curved bars 25 used.
Fig. '7 ot the drawing, l have illustrated a passage way Aor chamber frame 26 having a horizontal flange 27, provided with a rib 28. Secured to the frame 26 is a-Yhinge 29, the member of'said hinge being secured to one of the doors, and constructed to clear the flange 27 when the door is swung open. TheV hinged edge of the door is grooved, as at 3l, to engage over 'the rib 28 when the door is closed, this form supporting the door slightly above the level of the side walk orv pavement 2.
` In Fig. 8 of the drawing, I have illustrated practically the same hinge as applied to the flange 27 provided with a seat 32. ln this connection, the door 8- is supported on a level Hush. With the surface of the sidewalk or pavement. v
ln the above mentioned Figs. 7 and 8, the hinged members 30 are emploved. for sup- -ecting water, dirt and such -aterial that may or chamber of the avement or sidewalk 2. lnsome instances,- l
may entirely disperse with the hinged roem-i.
bers 30 and carried by the use the metallic gutters 30 in lieu thereof. I
A still further modification of' myinvention is illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawing, wheein the sidewalk or pavement 2 is provided with a hinge 33 having an anchorage 34 in the pavement or sidewalk, said pavement or sidewalk being' recessed as at 35, to clear the movement of the hinged door 8. The pavement or sidewalk 2 is provided with a resilient strip ol material 33, to provide an air tight and water proof connection between the pavement or sidewalk 2 and the doors 8 and 9. portance to this modiiication, owing to the fact that theframes are entirely dispensed with., the hinges being embedded within the concrete construction of the pavement or sidewalk.
ln Fig. l() of the drawing, is shown a construction adapted for sidewalks and pavements wherein hinged doors or sections 8 and 9 are provided with transparent plates or lights 36. The doors or sections 8 and 9 are hinged in a beam 37 of the channel construction.
Thron hout the various constructions disclose vabove it will Abe observed that l have devised novel doors that can be readily opened from the inside of a passage way or chamber, the doors and their supporting elements being particularlyT designed for concrete pavements and sidewalks.
Vhile l have herein described the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 as the preferred form, it is obvious that I ma f use such forms as are permissible by the scope of the appended claims.
