April 8, 1930. w, w, LQY ET AL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Filed March 10, 1923 v 5 m V WW m/ 2 we a /w W i h I Patented Apr. 8, 1930 res PATENT WALTER WAYNE LOY, F SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA, AND EDWARD JOHN ORUM, OF KALISPELL, MONTANA BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Application filed March 10, 1928. Serial No. 260,773.
T his invention. relates to improvements in building construction and an object of the invention is to provide walls with a smooth outer and inner surface of durable and eco nomical construction without studding, nails, bolts or other fasteners and with which provision is made for vertical expansion or contraction of the boards while at the same time maintaining the joints of the wall tight.
Our improved construction is particularly adapted for the building of houses, cottages, garages, barns etc, in fact to all modern forms of buildings.
With these and other objects hereinafter more fully discussed, the novel features of the invention are an improved joint including a metal corner plate formed with ridges or ribs adapted to co-operate with slots formed in the building beams or boards.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an octagonal structure or building grooved and fitted with our improved corner plates,
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1 partly 1n section,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of an improved rectangular structure,
* Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3 partly in section,
Figure 5 is a perspective View of a corner plate to fit an angle 01. substantially 15 de- Figure 6 is a similar plate for an angle of 90 degrees,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a tongue and groove joint to show the grooves to ongagewith the corner plate,
Figure 8 is a cross section through one of the tongue and groove beams.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which a preferred example of our invention is disclosed, A designates the wall of an octagonal building, as disclosed in Figure 1, comprising the sections 11, 12- and 13 formed of tongue and groove boards 14 of well known construction. Adjacent each end of these boards 14: 011 the outside are provided vertically extending slots 15 into which snugly lit the longitudinally extending ridges or ribs 16 and 17 formed on each side of a corner plate 18 which in combination with said grooves constitutes the essential feature of our invention.
It will readily be seen that the ribs 16 and 17 are spaced from the edge of the strip so as to form an overlapping lip 18 at each edge of the corner plate 18, so that when the corner plate is in position on the building this overhanging lip embraces the boards of the building at the outer sides of the grooves made for the ribs, lending additional strength to the panels or side walls by giving additional support to the sides of the grooves and also rendering the joint weather tight.
This corner or angle plate 18 may be formed to conform to the contour of any suitable angle according to the building under construction.
In the octagonal building disclosed in Figure 1 the corner plates are necessarily spaced while in the rectangular building as disclosed in Figure 3 they are formed at a more acute angle. These angle or corner plates are preferably constructed of steel although any other metal may be used and, as above described, are formed with longitudinally extending ridges or tongues on the inside face of each side or leg of the plate. They are then fitted perpendicularly, extending the full height of the building, into the coordinating grooves or slots 15 formed in the structural boards adjacent each corner.
In other words the combination is one of horizontal boards or beams having top and bottom faces tongued and grooved and grooved across the outside face to engage with the corner plate. The ends of the beams may also be bevelled.
In the drawings a window 19 or a door opening is shown and one side of the corner plate 18 being also disclosed in connection therewith provided with a single rib 20.
As many changes could be made in the above and many widely different embodiments of our invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the accom anying specification and drawings shall e interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is In a building construction, the combination with boards butted to form a corner joint and formed with grooves therein adjacent and extending parallel thereto, of an angle metal plate bent to conform with the angle of said joint and provided with ribs, said ribs being adapted to register and engage with the grooves, and extending adjacent and parallel with overlapping protective lips on the sides of the plate, said lips being designed to overlap the grooves When the plate is mounted on said corner joint to provide a protected joint and groove structure.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
WALTER WAYNE LOY. EDWARD JOHN GRUM.
