Description

NiTnD Tn'rns ka'rnnr rauen.
DARIUS J. HENDRIOKS'ON, OF OTEGO, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,3611, dated February 16, 1858.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Damos J. HENDRICK- SON, of Otego, in the county of vOtsego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Instrument for Olinching the Nails Holding the Shoes upon Horses and Cattles Feet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists ofan instrument similar in some respects to common pinchers or pliers ,used by blacksmiths or vfarriers in pulling shoes from horses and cattles feet; but the jaws of said instrument are constructed in such a manner that by applying one of the said jaws to the bottom of the foot on the head of the nail the other jaw clasps or hitches onto the point of the nail on the outside of the hoof, and then by shutting the instrument together it draws down the point of the nail and firmly clinches the nail without hammering or pounding in the usual way.
The figure is a side view of the invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my clinching-pliers, I make them of wrought or malleable iron, with lips faced with steel, which lips are toothed or notched to prevent slipping, as seen at B. The appearance of the pliersis similar to pliers in general, having one of the lips A curved and no lip on the other handle, but substituting in its place plate c, which serves as the lower lip for clinching. This lip c is attached to screw D, which is a part of the handle, or attached to it, forming the fulcra for the lip B to press against in clinching the nail. E is an adjustable spring for the purpose of holding lip e in the required position.
it has passed through the hoof; then by pressing the handles together, as in ordinary pliers or pinchers, the end of the nail is brought down firmly onto the hoof and clinched without the aid of the hammer and clinching-iron. The lip c has two clinching ends intended to be adapted to larger and smaller hoofs, and is held in its proper place by spring E. Vhen `I desire to change the sides, I press back the spring out of the groove in the end ofthe lip c and turn lip c around so that the other lip may be used; then let go the spring, and it falls into the groove at the other end, which holds it in its place. Thus by the aid of my invention I firmly fasten or clinch the nails without the aid of a hammer pounding in the usual way, which I find to be a great convenience and saving of labor in shoeing cattle and horses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The construction of the lips or j aws of pliers, as herein described, for the purpose of clinching the nails with which the shoes are fastened to the feet of horses and cattle, the clinehing being done without a hammer or pounding, as heretofore, as set forth and herein described.
DARIUS J. IINDRIGKSON.
