N o. 193,284 k Patented July `1'7, 1877.
N. PETERS, FHOTD-UTNOGRAPHER. WAHINGTON. D C.
FFICE.
ALMON B. ROBERTS, OF BROOKS, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-HOLDBACKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,284, dated July 17, 1877; application tiled June 2, 1877.
To all 'whom it may concern: l Be it known that I, ALMON B. ROBERTS, of Brooks, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Holdbacks; and I do hereby de- The hook, being thus made separate from the base, can, in case of breakage, be easily removed and another substituted without having to throw away the entire holdback. Between the ears c e is pivoted a latch, O, Vhaving a head, C', as shown, against which bears a spring, D, fastened in thel recess a. 'lhese parts are also easily removable when required; The base A of the holdback is to be let into the thill and fastened by bolts or screws.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The base-plate A, formed with the recess a, boss b, hole d, and ears e c, with slot between them, in combination with the hook B,
ation ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view, partly in section, of my holdback; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a holdback, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the base or base-plate of my holdback, said plate being cast with a recess, a, on its under side. On the outer side ofthe plate A, at one end, is cast a boss, b. Near the center is a round hole, d, and toward the other end are two projecting ears, e e, between which is a s1ot`through the plate, opening into the recess a underneath. B represents the hook, which is formed with a braced arm, B', and with a shank or tenon, h. This tenon is passed through the hole d, and fastened by passing a pin, z', through it on the under side of the plate. The end of the arm B then rests on the boss b, and is fastened thereto by a screw.
the spring D, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the recessed, perforated, and slotted base-plate A, having boss b and ears e e, the hook B, with arm B and tenon h, the latch O, with head C', and the spring D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALMON B. ROBERTS.
