Description

.l. N. BRU SH.
Car-Brakes. No. 138,126. PatentedAprii22,1873.'
. AM, PHOTD-UTNOSRAFH/L 00. N Museum/=19 PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOSHUA N. BRUSH, OF OLMSTEAD COUNTY, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,126, dated April 22, 1873; application. filed May 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA N. BRUSH, of the county of Olmstead and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gar-Brake; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and. figures of reference marked thereon. V
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the under side of the same.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in car-brakes, consisting in the novel arrangement of devices hereinafter described, the object of which is chiefly to hold the brake at any desirable tension and allow of easy operation.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents the platform of a railroad car; B, a wheel; 0, a brake-shoe; and D, a chain leading from it to a lever-wheel, E, around part of the periphery of which it is wound. This wheel is journaled to the carplatform and furnished with an operating-handle, F. G G, respectively, segmental rows of slots and teeth formed in the wheel E 5 H, a similar row of teeth on one side of this wheel, engaging with the teeth of an upright curved rack, I 5 J, a dog hinged to the car, attached to a cross-piece, J, which is also hinged to the car, and holds a pin, K, with a knob, K, pro jecting upward through an orifice in the carplatform 5 L, a spiral spring wound around the pin K, one end resting on an inwardly-projecting flange situated within said orifice, and (lesigned toraise the dog J, the end of which engages with the teeth G. M represents a dog pivoted underneath the car-platform A, and furnished with a handle, N, which works in a curved slot, 0. This dog engages with the slots G to hold the wheel at different points, and thus regulate the tension of the brake. The dog J and rack I are for the purpose also of regulating the brake, and may be used in' combination. P indicates the shaft of the lever-wheel E, and P a spiral spring wound around the same between the face of the wheel and the journal-bearin g Q, and is designed for the purpose of pressing the teeth H against the rack I.
I claim as my invention- The carbrake herein described, consisting of the brake-shoe 0, chain D, lever-wheel E with sector of teeth G, lateral teeth H, rack I, dogs J M, and springs K P, all constructed and arranged to operate as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSHUA N. BRUSH.
