This invention has for its object to provide improved means involving the use of a flexible wire cable contained in a fixed sheath, for operating and securing pivoted windows.
The invention comprises the combination of a slidable spring controlled catch mounted on the movable part of the window, means for engagement by the catch on the fixed part of the window, a lever in association with the catch, and a flexible operating cable attached to the lever and contained for the greater part in a sheath attached to the fixed part of the window, the arrangement being such that movement of the cable in one direction serves to close the window whilst movement in the opposite direction serves to open the window after first releasing the catch.

In applying the invention in the manner illustrated to a window which is pivoted on a horizontal axis, I attach to the upper part of the fixed frame a a striking plate or keep b, and at the upper end of the pivoted window frame 0 I attach a fitting (1 containing a slidable catch e (Figures 2 and 3) which is moved into its active position by a spring 1 and is adapted to engage the striking plate b. On the fitting d is pivoted at g a lever h which engages a projection on the catch. The connection between lever and catch is preferably provided with lost motion and in the preferred arrangement as shown is effected by pins 2' on the projection 7' and slots is in the lever h, the shape of the slots being such that when a closing movement is imparted to the window the catch e can on encountering the striking plate b move independently of the lever h.
To the free end of the lever is secured a flexible wire cable I which passes through a guide m associated with the striking plate and is encased for the greater part of its length by a sheath n mounted on the fixed frame of the window. A slidable or other operating handle 0 is attached to the end of the cable remote from the catch lever. 7
Assuming the window to be open, an appropriate movement causes a pull to be imparted to the lever in the direction for closing the window. The window is held in the closed position by the engagement of the catch with the striking plate. To open the .window the reverse movement is given to the cable. The first effect of this movement is to cause the lever to withdraw the catch. Afterwards the push exerted by the cable on the lever causes the window to open. The movement of the lever h about the pivot g under the action of a pull on the cable is limited by the abutment of a stop p on the lever against the adjacent part of the fitting 01.
By this invention I am able to effect the opening and closing of pivoted windows in a very simple, convenient and reliable manner. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. Means for operating and securing pivoted windows comprising the combination of a slid- 7 able spring controlled catch member mounted on the movable part of the window, means for engagement by the catch member on the fixed part of the window, a lever member, a lost motion connection between the levermember and the so catch member, a flexible operating cable attached to the lever member, and a sheath attached to the fixed part of the window and containing the greater part of said cable, the lost motion connection between the lever member and the catch 35 member comprising a pin on one of said members and an elongated slot in the other of said membars.
2. Means for operating and securing pivoted windows comprising the combination of a slid- 9o able spring controlled catch member mounted on the movable part of the window, means for engagement by the catch member on the fixed part of the window, a lever member, a lost motion connection between the lever member and the catch member, a flexible operating cable attached to the lever member, and a sheath attached to the fixed part of the window and containing the greater part of said cable, the lost motion connection between said members comprising a pin on the catch member and elongated slots in the lever member.-
