Description

Nov. 7, 1939. c. w. WARD TRANSOM CONTROLLER Filed March 9, 1938 INVENTOR. CHARLEj W WARD BY W ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT UFFiQE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to transoms and more particularly to improvements in transom actuating and locking means.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple,
practical and inexpensive device of the character described.
Another object is to provide a transom actuating and locking means which may be attached to the ordinary transom without changing its con-- struction.
Another object is to provide transom actuating and locking means which can be operated with one hand.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a side view of a door jamb and transom illustrating my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 show a door jamb 5, a door member ii, a transom l having a hinge 8 secured to a lower frame member 9 of the transom and door member 6, a bracket ill suitably secured to transom 1 near the upper portion thereof and has an arm 6 I extending over door jamb 5. A bracket l2 suitably affixed to door jamb 5 behind arm ii and carries a pulley it over which passes a cord i l, the upper end of which is secured to arm ll. A slide rod is secured by brackets It to door jamb ti and carries a slider ll having a locking member l3 pivoted thereto at I9. Number 18 has a finger aperture 20 and alocking tip 2! and a spring 22 and is secured to the lower end of cord Hi.
From this construction, it will be apparent that spring 22 keeps locking member l8 locked against rod I5 by the pressureof tip 2| against rod 15, but may be released therefrom by a downward pull.
Door member 6 has a recess 23 in which is located a tubular member 24 having a compres sion spring 25 therein, the upper end of which bears against a plate 26 suitably recessed in transom frame member 9.
From this construction, it will be apparent that the pressure of spring 25 will urge transom ii into open position and that the transom will open by merely releasing locking member it from rod l5 and this can be done by a simple manipulation of the locking member with one hand.
It will be understood that the foregoing description is illustrative only of my invention and that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim A device of the character described, comprising a transom having its lower end hinged to a door frame, a spring, normally holding said transom open, an arm carried by the upper end of the transom and extending laterally over the side of the door frame, a pulley carried by the door frame in horizontal alignment with the arm carried by the transom, a rod carried by the door frame below the pulley and spaced from the frame, a slider of U-shape form straddling said rod and freely movable thereon, a cable connected to the arm carried by the transom and passing over 30 the pulley and connected to the slider, a locking member intermediately pivoted between the outer ends of the arms of the slider, a locking tip carried by the inner end of the locking member and engaging the rod, a finger grip aperture in the looking member beyond the slider, and a spring engaging the locking member beyond its pivot for normally holding the locking tip in engagement with the rod.
