Description

FERDINAND RHRER, oE HEIDELBERG, GERMANY.
CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR SHUTTERS AND THE LIK.
Specification of Letters lliatentT Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application iled March 18, 1912. Serial No. 684,406.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND BHRER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 13 Landhausstrasse, Heidelberg, in the German Empire, have invented cer-tain newl and useful Improvements in Controlling Devices for Shutters and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object a device without springs and with a single operating cord for opening and closing easement windows and transoms.
The device does not comprise any intermediate mechanism which would impede its free operation and is characterized by the fact that the opening,.locking and unlocking of the transom are effected by a single ben? lever which is operated by the said corc.
An embodiment o-f the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the transom open. Fig. 2 shows the transom closed, in front elevation. Fig. 3 is a corresponding plan view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the transom open.
1 designates an ordinary window frame to which the transom 2 is hinged in the usual manner, by means of hinges not shown in the drawing.
Upon the upper edge of the transom a plate or bracket 3 is fixed by means of screws and lugs 5 upon this plate, that is to say upon the semi-circular projection 6 a bent lever 8 is pivoted by means of a pin 7 the rear portion 9 of this lever being bent at right angles and provided with an aperture 10.
Upon the bracket 3 6 there is Xed a stop 11 which in the two eXtreme positions of the bent lever is able to bear against the shoulders 12 and 13. 14 is a pin Xed in the bracket upon the upper extremity of which the bent lever has frictional contact in order to insure perfect guidance. Upon the horizontal cross member of the window frame 1 a sort of hook or nose 16 is fixed and behind this the hooked extremity 17 of the bent lever is intended to engage when the transom is closed.
Upon the plate 15 that is to say upon its edge, guide roller 18 is Xed; the traction cord 19 attached in the opening 10 in the lever 8 passes behind this roller. The opposite end of the -cord passes over a guide roller 21 and finally ends in a ring or handleV 22. y
Y 23 is a guide eyelet and 24a sort ofknot formed in the cord. This knot might be replaced by a stop of any kind which ata given moment strikes, against the upper face of the eyelet 23.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When the transom occupying the openl position (Figs. 1 and 4) is to be closed, a
sudden pull or jerk 'is given to the cord. 19 until the knot 24 encounters the eyelet 23. Owing to the sudden traction the transom is brought against the frame 1 and closed, while'the bent lever is engaged at its bent end 17 behind the nose 16 of the plate 15 `owing to the momentum acquired. The free movement of the bent lever is not in any way impeded as the cord is released as soon as the pull has been given. The opposite end of the cord is therefore slackened or released.
When the device is fitted, the knot 24 is arranged in such a manner in the cord that when the transom is closed, it still presents sufficient play to permit the bent lever to engage in the nose itself when the cord is still retained in the hand. The sudden traction is opposed by the eyelet 23 so that the bent lever is released suddenly.
When the transom is closed, the bent lever occupies the position shown in Fig. 3. It is only necessary to pull the cord 19 suddenly in order to release the lever. transom then falls by its own weight into the closed position.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A controlling device for windows comprising in combination with a movable and a stationary window frame, a double-armed horizontal bent lever, pivotally carried by the movable frame and having its one end bent to form a bolting hook and its other end bent to form a part, controlling the bent lever by interfering with the stationary frame when closing and opening the window, an operating cord xed to the said controlling part and guided at the stationary window frame, a stop provided on the said operating cord, means attached to the stationary frame and engaging with the said stop for limiting its motion when the window is opened or closed and a hook fixed to the stationary frame and adapted The to come into engagement With the said. bolting hook.
2. A controlling device for Windows com-V prising in combination With a movable and a stationary Window frame, a double-armed horizontal bent lever and a bracket attached to the movable frame, the lever pivoting on the bracket and having its one end bent to form a bolting hook and its other end bent to form a part Controlling the bent lever by pushing against the sta.- tionary frame When opening and Closing the Window, an operating oord fastened to the said controlling part, rollers for'guicling the said cord on the stationary frame, 15 the oord having a knot to limit its motion When closing land opening the Window, a hook carried by the stationary frame and adapted to engage With the said bolting hook, and a stop carried by the bracket and 20 limiting the rotary motion of the bent lever. Y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tivo. Witnesses.
