' 1:10am. iclgisa ss'l f' i [This invention relates to punching mag as; for 'use' .upon'metal and particularly, to 5 rotary machines of that class. Its object is to provide a' novel and improved niachine having; among others, the improvements'and advantages herein pointed out and. claimedf t In the drawings of one embodiment ofriiyj invention selected for description and illustration, Fig. 1. is a side elevationfpartly broken awa V diagrammafic'view of the Severn mnsj 'and the'stoclr'on which they act;
(Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view feeding andthe punching" rolls Fig. 4, a side view in detail of the burr re mover; I j Fig. 5, a detailsection on the line 5%5, Fig. 3;'
and
.Fig. 6, a plan view of the stripper member. Referring first to Figs. 1, 2, my novel punching 'niachine comprises a bed I, withr'oll and gear? supporting posts or frames 2, 3,14'ther'e0n, and",
similar frames, not shown ,on the opposite side ofthe bed. V I.
In frame 2' are mounted two 'feed rolls 5'; 6 of any convenient construction, thejournals '7 8 for which are carried in a vertical channel 9 in the frameZ. These journals are normallyre'tained in proper relation to 'eachjoth'er by a spring 10' seated between them andkept underproper defa gear 26 on the shaft of roll 22, which shaft alsoj membe1112 secured to the upper frame end'sxby bolts I3. 1-
The punching roll 14. provided with punches 14 and cooperating dieroll 15' are carried in a similar'manner in the same framejbyjournals 16, 17- and bridge 18 while clearing rolls 21,122
are carried in the same manneri'nframe 3. A main drive shaft 23 is mounted in the frame 24 and this shaft carries a gear 25 vmeshed with is suitably connected with awheel Zfifinshaift 29 as by a chain 27, said shaft 29"carryin'g the burr-removing roll 30. f
The shaft of the roll 22 also carries a wheel31 with chain 32 thereon running over wheel 33on the shaft of the rear feeding roll 34, which with journals 36, 3'? spaced by spring 32} and cooperat ing roll 35 are mountedin the framed; andby the means described, the said various rolls and wheels are operated.
The shaft ,39 of "thediefrolllh also carriesa gearv in mesh with the gear 25 by 'which the former is rotated and whi'ch also, through f the gear 41 on shaft 42 in the frame also drives gear 45 on the shaft 44 with feed'roll, 6; The shaft 46 of roll 14 carries also agear '47 in mesh with gear 49 on shait 39 with roll 15, and by which roll 14 is driven, and roll 5 is similarly driven by a gear 49 on its shaft 50, and meshing with gear n anenia'rged' scale through the bed and the 'center 'of the first;
ed,'f Figs. 1, 2, 3; is emiippedwith punches 14'- 39, The r011 .15 is chan'ne'led' lon itudi ally as at53. about its face". Fig. 3, to receive outfmaterlal, or scrap, and if these channels are inclined towards one end 01' the roll, they willmore readily automatically carry it way. The dies 5'2, Fig. 3, are forined in" plates secured the propeif dista'nce apart byscrews 55' to'the surface ofro1l'l5'. 'By this-means after the dies become dull; the plates 54' may be refacedand the" dies sharpened and the plates repositioned and adjusted byrai-sing them slightly from-their seats by means ofshims.
The burr remover 30 is a r l of siri-tahle atmsive material 'as' metal; withfdiagonal'grooves orribs 5'6 thereonwhic'h', by abrasive action; remove cleanly and without injury to the sheetmateriak any burr resultingfromthe punching action.
' The frames-{Rigel} 3",;5, carry g'uides 5'7, 58 to ensure the proper feeding of the stock; g Heretofore great difficulty has beenexiaerienced when using rotary punches, in controlling the punching action andthe feeding oftheustoek,
45' on the shartji 'of run 6.. fine 01114, as stat to ensureaccurate and uniform results; To that?- end I haye.devised the following construction. Tothehottoin'of theplate' 59, which longitudinally adjustable on theguide 5a bymeans of as" by a'scre w 6 2-one end of'a resilient feed step i stockt 'at'each revolutiorr'of theroll5.
'The bed a lso' carries at the left'oi the roll 5 upperand-lower guides 70,71; to assist improper. feeding ofthe mover; -'I'0 eifectpdsitive strippingot the stock. from the unch, Figs 3, 6 have also provideda block 7-2 with aforwa-rdly' extended I bevelled finger t3 resting within a channel. in the" face 01' the punch rolli'i, and: above the stock; the member 'zmbeing channeled', however; at .75; to permit pas sage oi the punches M 'themselvestherethrough.
stock to the: punches and burr res The memben'ls also may have: en'ctilrigers 76 to assist in'stripping'the sto'clc5 Infoperationthe feed, punching andficlwu rolls'ihaving been relatively adjusted'vertically 1 hand-between the guides-{57, 58 from-the front;
for the stock to be handled, the stock is ied'b'y Fig. I, right hand endof the machineiijintil the front end'of the stock engages-the a p et. In this positibnthefeed wheel's 5 ,"6, engage the stock only slightly and. slip over its face. The
punches have of course been;so located on the roll 14 as tooperate at the required points on the stock. The pin 68 is positioned on the roll of the stop 64. vAs the stock is fed against the chine relative to the feed roll 6, that the punches stop 64 by the pin 68, the stop is forced down by the stock to a level with the bottom of the stock,-
permitting the latter to pass over the stop to the punching roll. Y Y
The latter roll has been so adjusted on the mawill act upon the stock at the, proper distance from the leading end of the stock,and thus produce desired anduniform results. The punches 14% are intended to pass entirely through the stock, andinto -jthe. cooperating dies 52, a very short distance, the'punched out material dropping into the channels 53 and eventually dropping out at their ends. f f
' Occasionally, however, some of the punches do not cut through thestock sufiiciently to free the punched out material, and to take care of such instances I provide the'clearer rolls 21, 22, already referred to, and provided 'with slightly smaller punchesbut a little longer and inlike'location, and these act to" free any mat rial not freed by the first punch r011,
The material is next acted uponby the burr removing roll 30 which clears effectively, the lower face .of thestocl: of all rough'fedges remaining thereon. The rearfeed rolls 34, '35, not only act as such but they also act to position the stock and to regulate the speed at which it is fedunder the influence ofrthe roll 30 thereon as the latter operates upon it.
- This invention is not restricted to the precise embodiment thereof described and illustrated.
