3 Claims.
This invention relates particularly to door locks in which a pin-tumbler cylinder is located in the knob; and it consists primarily in providing for the operation of an axially arranged latch spindle by means of an eccentrically arranged key plug in an axially alined outer cylinder; and in providing for the substitution of a different cylinder in case of needed change in the key operation of the spindle, without undesired operation of the latter; as fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred application of the complete invention to a cylinder-knob lock employing a removably-secured cylinder section as specifically set forth in copending Lyons application issued April 26, 1932, No. 1,855,607; the present novel features being clearly defined in the subjoined claims.
Fig. 1 is mainly a longitudinal-sectional view showing the essential portions of a cylinderknob door lock embodying the complete invention; an ordinary operating key being indicated in the eccentrically arranged key-plug of the pin-tumbler cylinder without showing of detail of the latter.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
As shown, the pin-tumbler cylinder is centrally mounted in the outside door knob A, in alinement with the central latch-operatingspindle B; the improvements relating particularly to operating mechanism for the latter in the knob barrel C; and the cylinder being indicated as comprising a fixed inner section 10, and an outer section 21, 21a having an eccentric key plug 18, said outer section being adapted to be removable from the fixed section 10 by special-key operation of the indicated locking arm 13 as specifically set forth in the prior application referred to (Pat. No. 1,855,607 dated April 26, 1932), it being understood that our purpose is to provide for such removal and replacement of said outer section without affecting operation of the latch.
To provide for effecting roll-back operation of the central latch spindle B from the eccentric key-plug 18 of the alined cylinder, we provide, as shown, a rotatably mounted spindle-rotating member 25, operatively connected to the keyoperated plug 18 by meshing gears 19, 20 on the respective parts, so that key-rotation of said eccentric plug will impart corresponding rotation to said central spindle for operation of the dead latch. This spindle-rotating member 25 is mounted as shown in fixed bearings 26, 26a, secured to the fixed cylinder section 10. To provide in the present arrangement for enabling removal and replacement of the outer cylinder section 21, 21a when needed, without causing undesired movement of the spindle and latch in making such change, we provide a clutch-sleeve 30, movable into and out of spindle-driving connection with the separate rotating member 25; such disengaging movement being efiected by a clutchshifting arm 31, having a special-key contact-end 31a arranged axially of the key plug so as to be preliminarily moved to unclutching position by full insertion of the special key employed to release the removable section 21. i
It will be understood that the latch-operating gear member 20 is rotatably secured to the fixed cylinder section 10 as shown; and that it is'normally in engagement with the inner end of the key plug 18 so as to be key-operated thereby while at the same time permitting withdrawal of the removable cylinder section 21, 21a when the latter is unlocked by use of the special key, in like manner to my prior construction referred to.
By thus indirectly eilecting the roll-back operation of the dead latch from the eccentric plug 18, through gears 19, 20, use of the ordinary pintumbler cylinder and its introduction centrally through the rear of the knob, is enabled as fully set forth in said Lyons Patent No. 1,855,607; and in connection with the clutch-controlled connection of the spindle B, renewal of the removable cylinder section 21, 21a as specifically provided for by our present improvement, is enabled with avoidance of any latch-operating action. The preferred detail construction set forth may be modified within the invention as defined in the claims.
What we claim is:
1. A cylinder-knob door lock having an axially arranged latch spindle, an axially arranged pintumbler cylinder having an eccentric key plug, a separate spindle-rotating member, means for rotating said member from said eccentric keyplug, and key- -controlled clutch means connecting said member with the spindle.
2. In a lock provided with a latch operating spindle, a pin-tumbler cylinder having a key plug disposed eccentrically with respect to said spindle, a separate spindle operating member, means for actuating said member from said eccentric key plug, and key-controlled clutch means connecting said member with said spindle.
3. In a door lock having a latch operating spindle; a pin-tumbler cylinder provided with a removable key-plug; key-controlled means for locking said plug in place and operable to permit removal of said plug from said cylinder; means for operating said spindle from said key plug; and key-controlled clutch mechanism operable for disconnecting said spindle from said plug to inhibit operation of said spindle during removal of said plug.
