Be it known that I, WILHELM Hii'r'rn- MANN, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Oologne-Lindenthal, Germany, have invented .certainnew and useful Improvements in Door Locks (for which I have filed applications in Germany April 25, 1914, March 5, 1915, February 16, 1916, March 4, 1919, August 4, 1919, September 12', 1919, and Great Britain, October 20, 1919), of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a doorlock of the kind in which the inner doorhaudle is rotatable relative to the outer one,
and consists essentially in the provision of a rotary ring or casing which 1s coupled to the inner handle and adapted to operate the follower when the handle is pressed in the usual manner, the ring being provided with an arm which, when the handle is turned in the direction opposite to the usual one, serves to arrest the lock mechanism. Means are provided whereby such arrest may affect the bolt itself or merely theouter handle, in which latter case the bolt is left free to engage like an automatic latch and to be Withdrawn from the outside by means of a key.

The bolt 7 is operated by means of a hellcrank lever 9 Fig. 2 and a follower 6 which is directly connected to the outer handle 2. The inner handle 1, which is rotatable relative to the outer one, controls a ring 14,
through a slot 10 or notch in which the operating arm 8 of the follower projects, the arm -being -16 of the slot for operating the bolt, when engaged by the ring 14 at one end the handle is turned in the ordinary manner. The ring 14 carries an arm 13 which, by turning the inner handle backwards, can be placed against a shoulder 15 (Fig. 2) or in a notch 33 (Fig. 6) in the bolt for arresting the latter. According to Figs. 6 to 8, the bellcrank lever, instead of acting directly on the bolt, 'acts on a slide 30 the inner end 83 of which abuts against a shoulder 32 formed on the slide 30 close to the notch 33. A spring 84, hearing against the inner end of the bolt, tends to maintain bolt and slide in a forward position. The slide 30 has a In 31 against which the arm 13 can be place for arresting the slide, and thereby the outer handle, without arresting the bolt, which is therefore free to move in oppositon to the spring 84, so that it can be used as an automatically engaging latch. The bolt can also be arrested by turning the arm-into engagement with the notch 33 as previously described.
When the outer handle is arrested by dogging the bolt by means of the inner handle,
as just described, the latch-bolt 'can'be operated from the outsideby means of a key. This key-mechanism, (Figs. 11 and 12) will be of the revolving-barrel type, the, barrel having an arm 20 which acts directly on the-bolt for the withdrawal of the same. The key may also be used for arresting the bolt 7 the barrel-arm being for that purpose turned against a lug 40 formed on the bolt.

46 for actuating the bolt. When the casing is turned in the opposite direction, an arm 44, connected to the casing, is placed against a lug 41 on the bolt for arresting the latter.
To retain'the inner handle in its various positions, a spring-pressed push pin 21 may be employed, as shown in 11 lg. 1. The pus pin is connected to a casing 18 which is axially displaceable in the handle-shaft. Lugs 22 on the casing take into grooves 23 in the lock-spindle to prevent rotary displacement relative to the latter. Lugs 19 on the casing take into notches 20in the boss of the inner handle, thereby holding the handle in Vri/ lllh e handle is released from the lugs 19 by a pressure on the push pin 21.
According to another construction (Fig. 14) a spring 71 is employed which acts on the ring 14 and tends to turn the handle in the arresting position. The lug 19 stops the handle in either of three positions by engagement with the apertures 82 in a plate 76 secured to the boss of the inner handle. When it is desired to turn the handle from the normal position into position for arresting the outer handle, it is only necessary to depress thepush pin 21. The handle will then be turned by the spring until the lug 19 snaps into engagement with the next ap erture 82. If a locking of the bolt 7 is desired, the push pin is again depressed so that the spring can bring the handle to the extreme position in which the arm 13 is put into engagement with the notch 33. The end of the lug 19 is bevelled in one direction so that when the handle is turned for operating the bolt, the "lug '19 is automatically retracted and released from the aperture 82.
A pin 4 '(Fig. 16) which is fitted in the handle-shaft and takes into a groove of the lock spindle for retaining the shaft on the spindle may be provided with a triangular head, asshown in Fig. 17, adapted to snap into engagement with apertures in a spring 25 secured to the escutcheon. or to the door so as to hold the handle yieldingly in the different positions.
A modified device is shown in Figs. 14 and 14 and consists of a ring 72 which'is axially slidable on the handle-shaft. The lock according to Fig. 7 has a pivoted bolt 36 such as used for slidin doorsand T y means of the door-handles as previously. described. The slide has a bevelled end surface 37 which strikes against a corresponding shoulder 38 on thebolt, thereby turning the bolt about the pivot 35. A spring 34 tends to hold the bolt and slide in the normal position. A keymechanism 39, as previously described, may be used for lifting the bolt-head by means of the barrel-arm which can also be applied to a hooked lug 41 on the bolt for arresting the latter. The lock-mechanism may be adapted for arresting the slide 30 and thereby the outer door-handle, the bolt being then free to engage automatically when the door is slammed. This is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 7, the slide bein provided with a lug 40 for engagement wit the barrel-arm which such as shown in Fig. 10. The striking plate is shown in Fig. 9.
According to the modification shown in .Fig. 13 the outer handle is arrested by means of a pivoted catch 51 which snaps over a lug 50 secured to the follower 6. When the inner handle is used, an arm 52 on the ring 14 engages the catch 51 and turns it about its pivot so as to release the follower before the latter isv engaged by the edge of the ring for operating the. bolt. In the normal position of the inner handle, the catch 51 is held by the arm 52 clear of the arm 50. The arm 13 on the'ring 14 can be used as previously describedfor arresting the bolt. From the outside the door can be opened by means of a key when the bolt is not arrested by the arm 13; The inner handle can be set by means of the lockplate 76 (Fig. 15) so that the outer handle is normally locked by the catch 51. The release of the outer handle can'then be effected electrically. For this purpose the catch is pivoted to the core 62 of asolenoid 61, and to a double-armed lever 63. When the solenoid is excited, the catch 51- is raised together With the core, and the lever 63 is turned about its pivot. Another catch 66 having a bevelled head with a nose 67, snaps over the end 64 of the lever 63 under the influence. of the spring 65 and retains I the catch 51. At the same time a clapper 69 a ll 70 to indicate that the door can be opened. As the bolt is withdrawn, a lug 68 on the same strikes against the catch 66 on a cylindrical portion and coup ed by means of pins 12 to the sliaft of the inner handle. The ring 56 may "consist of a mere prolongation of the hollow handle-shaft. The cylindrical portion of the lock spindle has a lug 57 (Figs. 19 and 20 which is engaged by the edge 58 of the ring 56 for operating the bolt. A catch'51 is arranged so as to take over the lug 57 and arrest the handle. Normally the catch is held 9. lug
52 on the ring 56 as shown in Fig. 19 so that either handle canbe used for opening the door.
When the rin is set bymeans of the inner handle in the position shown in Fig. 20, the outer handle is locked. To release the handle an electromagnet may be 1 used, as indicated. I ,4 The spindle 5 may be arranged underthe follower 55 engages the bolt as shown neath the bolt 7 in which case a lug 17 on in Fig. 18.
In the lock according to Figs. 1 and 2,
- which is suitable for the doors of lavatories and telephone cabinets, an indicator disc 26 is provided for showing in a window 80 whether the cabinet or the like is engaged or vacant. The disc is mounted on a sleeve 27 whichis rotatable about the lock-spindle and which has a lug 29 in engagement with a notch 11 in the ring 14. The disc will thus follow the adjustments of the inner handle. As the doors to which the locks have to be applied may vary in thickness, the arrangement of Fig. 4 may be resorted to, the disc havin a lug 28 which. takes into a longitudin slot in the sleeve so as to engage therewith in any position of axial ad'ustment.

In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of 'a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower 1n one direction of movement of. the inner handle, meansfor causing the ring to arrest the lock mechanism, when the inner 'handle is turned in the opposite direction,
and a spring pressed push pm guided longitudinally on the spindle of the outer handle and adapted to engage the inner handle in its posititon of reversal.
'6. .In a door -lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer doorfiandle and with an innerhandlewhich is re atable relative to the outer one, of a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causin the ring to engage and turn the folscribed, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a ring coupled to the inner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in one direction of movement of the inner handle means for causing the ring to arrest the boltmechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, a spring tending to hold the inner handle in arresting position, and a spring-pressed push pin guided longitudinally on the spindle of the outer handle and adapted to engage normally the inner handle in its various positions relative to the outer one.
8. In. a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door pin connected to the shaft of the inner handle, an escutcheon engaging'such pin so as to prevent axial movement of the handle, and a spring having apertures with which to engage the pin so as to secure the inner handle in arresting position.
9. In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in one directionoif movement of the inner handle, means for causing the ring to arrest the bolt mechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, and an indicator disc arranged at the outside of the door and. coupled to the, inner handle.
10. In a doorleek of the character described, the combination with the outer door i- .1. or a follower connected to the outer aeaaeea v door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a rotatable ring coupled to the lnner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in one direction of movement of the inner handle, means for causing the ring to arrest the bolt-mechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, an indicator disc arranged outside thedoor and coupled to the inner handle so as to indicate whether the bolt-mechanism is operable or not, and a window covering suchdisc, substantially as set forth.
11. In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative tothe outer one, of arotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to follow its movements, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in one direction of movement of-the inner handle, means for causing the ring to arrest the bolt-mechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, a sleeve arranged on the spindle of the outer handle and coupled to the inner handle so as to partake in its movements and an indicator disc arranged on such sleeve so as to be axially adjustable and so as to be visible from the outside for indicating whether the bolt-mechanism is operable or not, substantially as set forth.

In a door-lock. of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which slide controlled by the follower and. serving as operatin means between the follower and the loc -bolt,' arotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to move in umson therewith, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in the normal direction of movement without affecting it in the reverse direction, and an arm on the ring adapted to arrest the slide and the outer handle when the inner handle is turned in the direction opposite to the normal one, the lock-bolt being free to move when the slide is thus arrested, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 13. In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a slide controlled by thefollower and serving as operatin means between the follower and the loc -bolt, a rotatable ring coupled in thelreverse direction, and an arm on the ring adapted to engage and arrest the slide in one position and the lock-bolt in another position of reversal of the inner handle, substantially as set forth.
14. In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a pivoted lock-bolt, with a follower connected to the outer handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a slide controlled by the follower and operating the bolt by means of bevelled contact surfaces, a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to move in unison therewith, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower 1n the normal direction of movement without affecting it in the reverse direction, and an arm connected to said ring so as to engage and arrest the slide when the inner handle is reversed.
15. Ina door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a slide controlled by the follower and serving as operatin means between the follower and the loc -bolt, a rotatable ringcoupled to the inner handle so as to move ln'unison therewith, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in the normal direction of movement without afi'ecting it in the reverse direction, an arm on the ring adapted to engage and arrest the slidein one position and the lock-bolt in another position of reversal of the inner handle, a key-mechanism for operatin the bolt from the outside when the bolt-s ide is thus arrested, and a lug on the bolt co-operating with said key-mechanism for arresting the bolt b means of the key.
16. n a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a slide controlled by the follower and serving as operating means between the follower and the lock-bolt, a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to move in unison therewith, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower in the normal direction of movement without affecting it in the reverse direction, an arm on the ring adapted to engage and arrest the slide in one position and the lock-bolt in another position of reversal of the inner handle, a keyoperated slotted casing, a pivoted arm arranged in the slot of said casing so as to be turned by' the casing whenengatged at the ends of the slot in one direction 0 operating the bolt when the slide is arrested and in the other direction for arresting the bolt, substantially as set forth.

In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to move in unison therewith, a ring arranged beside the follower rotatably about the spindle, means for causing the g ring to engage and turn the spindle thus turning the follower when the inner handle is turned for operating the bolt, the ring being free to move independently in the reversed direction, means enabling the ring to arrest the outer handle in one position of reversal, means enabling the ring to arrest the lock-bolt in another position of reversal, a spring arranged inside the ring on a reduced portion of the bolt-spindle and tending to hold the ring in the extreme reversed position, and means for securing the ring in bolt-operative as well as in outer handle arresting position.

In a door-lock of the character described, the combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a prolongation on the shaft of the inner handle forming a ring such ring being adapted to engage and turn the follower when the inner handle is turned for operating the bolt, the ring having an arm adapted to arrest the bolt-mechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction.
29. In a door-lock of the character described, the' combination with the outer door handle of a follower connected to the outer door-handle and with an inner handle which is rotatable relative to the outer one, of a rotatable ring coupled to the inner handle so as to move in unison therewith, means for causing the ring to engage and turn the follower when the inner handle is turned for operadng the lock, means on the ring for arresting the bolt-mechanism when the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, a spring tending to hold the ring in arresting position, a longitudinally adjustable ring arranged on the shaft of the inner handle, and pins on said latter rin arranged so as to take throughthe shaft into a zig-zag groove in the bolt-spindle for arrestingthe inner handle in different positions relative to the spindle by engagement with the shoulders formed bv the zigzag groove.
