My invention relates to garment supporters of the type which is adapted to clamp between two clampng members a portion of the material of the garment to be supported, and my invention relates particularly to improvements on the garment supporter of my application for patent, Serial No. 531,765, filed April 2, 1931; patented February 16, 1932, as No. 1,845,255, the improvements relating particularly to the cushion member of the grippng device, and the means for holding it and to the constructon of the strap openings by which it is made possible to insert or remove a closed loop strap.

With the above ndcated objects, and other objects herenafter disclosed, in view, my invention conssts in the constructon and combination of elements hereinafter described. and;

claimed.

In the drawing, as in my applcation No. 531,- 765, above referred to, 1 and 2 indicate respectively the inner and outer members of the garment supporter betvveen which the material of the stocking or other garment to be supported is held, the back member 1 being the one which is, in use, next to the limb of the wearer. These members, 1 and 2, are each cut or stamped from sheet metal in the shapes shown in Figures 6 and 7', and Figures 4 and 5.

Inner member 1 has'at its upper end a strap opening or slot 3 and has at its lower end a strap opening 4 for connecting strap 30. Outer memf ber 2 has at its upper end a relatvely long slot 5 of such length as may be requred to receive the broad band usually employed to connect:the garment supporter to the waist band, corset or other garment of the wearer.

Inner member 1 has formed in it an upper opening 6 and a lower opening 7. The strap opening 3 is continuous with upper opening 6. The cross bar 8 at the upper edge of strap opening 3 has midway between its ends an opening 9 of suficient width to permt the strap 30, which connects the

bar 11 which forms its lower edge is bent forward and downward to form curved tongue, 12. From the loweredge of bar 11 a tongue 13 extends downward carrying cross bar 14 which forms the upper edge of strap opening 4. The lower edge of .this openng is 0rmed by cross bar 15 which ,has mdvvay between its ends an opening 16 adapted to permt the strap 30 to bepassed edgewise through it.

member 2is preferably out also, and bar 18 at the lower edge of this slot has an opening '19 at its centre of suficient width to permit the connecting strap 30 to be inserted endwise through it. This bar 18 forms the upper edge of an opening 20 having at its lower edge cross-bar 21. Extending downward from the lower edge of cross bar 21 s an opening 22 of suficient extent t permit tongue 10 to pass through t so as to permit the upper surface of this tongue to engage thelower edge of cross bar 21.

Outer member 2 has in it lower opening 23 formed between left hand leg 24 and right band leg 25, which extend downward as shown in Flgure 4. From the lower end of leg 24 cross bar 26 extends to the lower end of leg 25,With its end preferably extending into a recess 27 therein.

On cross bar 26 is carried cushioning material adapted. to fit Within the under face of tongue 12 of inner member 1. This cushioning materal s preferably a piece of tubing 28, of rubber or other elasbc material, the opening in which is adapted 1:0 fit on cross bar 26, onto which it may be slpped by sprnging the end of the cross bar out of recess 27, slipping the tubng onto it and returning the end of the cross bar back into recess 27.

The cross bar 26 s so located with reference to cross bar 21 that when the elastc tubing 28, Wth the materal of a stocking or other garment drawn forward. over it, is brought finto engagement With the under fase of curved tongue 12 and the upper portion of outer member 2 is pressed towards the inner member, tongue 10 will engage cross bar 21 and look the two members together.

T0 unlock the two members it is only necessary to press tongue 10 rearward to disengage it from cross bar 21.

The connecting strap 30 is run through strap opening 4 in the lower end of inner member 1, then along the back of this member 1, through strap opening 3, through strap opening 5 in outer member 2, back over bar 18 and down the back member 1 to its lower end, As theopenings in

The strap hinges the members at their upper ends leaving the lower ends free to swing from and towards each other and the double thickness at the back of the inner member serves to protect the wearer from direct contact With the metal of the inner member as well as to serve as a cushion. V

Having thus described my invention, what I cla-im is:-

1. In a. garrnent supporting member a grp ping device comprisng an outer and an inner member proyided near their lower ends with cooperating means for clamping the material of a garment between them, the outer member baving a. strap opening near its upper end, the inner member having a strap opening near its upper end and a strapopening at its lower end. and means for holding the clamping means of the two mernbers in clamping position, and a connecting strap extending through the strap openings at the upper ends of both members, passing along the back of the inner member and through the strap opening at its lower end.

2. In a garment supporting member a grpping device comprising an outer and an inner member provided near their lower ends With cooperating means for clamping the material of a garment between them, the outer member having a strap opening near its upper end, the inner member having a strap opening near its upper end and a strap opening at its lower end and means for holding the cl.mping means of the two members in olamping position, and a connecting strap extending through the strap openings at the upper ends of both members, passing along the baci: of the inner member and through the strap opening at its lower end, and back along the back of the inner member to its upper end forming a closed loop With two thicknesses of material at the back of the inner member.

3. In a garment supporter a, gripping device comprising an outer member, having a strap opening near its upper end, an inner member havng a strap opening near its upper end, the outer member being provided near its lower end With a device adapted to engage the material of the garment to be supported, 'and having near its upper end a cross bar, and the inner member being provided near its lower end with' an outwardly and downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper end of the upwardly extending devce carried by the outer member to c1amp the material thereon, said inner member having near its upper end locking means adapted to engage the underside of the cross bar of the outer member to look the inner and outer members against movement, and means for connectng the outer and inner members comprising a exble strap extending through the strap openings at the upper ends of the members.

In a garment supporter a gripping device comprising an outer member having a strap openng near its upper end, a cross-bar forming one edge of said 'opening having an opening midway between its ends adapted to permit a strap to be passed edgewise through t, an inner member a1so having a strap opening near its upper end, the

outer member being provided near its lower end with a device adapted to engage the material of the garment tobe supported, and having near its upper end across bar, and the inner member being provided near its lower end with an outwardly and downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper end of the upwardly extending devce carried by the outer member and having near its upper end locking means adapted to engage the underside of the cross bar of the outer member, means for connecting the members ai. their upper ends comprising a flexible strap extending through the strap openings.

5. In a garment supporter a gripping device comprising an outer member, an inner member loosely connected at its upper end to the outer member, the outer member being provided near its lower end with means for holding a cushion in the form of a tube of elastic material, comprising oppositely arranged downwardly extending legs, one of them provided With a cross bar carrying a tube of elastic material, said cross bar extending toward and having locking engagement with the o ther 1eg and the inner member being provided With an outwardly and downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper end of the cushion.

In a. garment a gripping device comprising an outer member, an inner mernber loosely con nected at its upper end to the outer member, the outer member being provided near its lower end with downwardly extending 1egs, a cross bar permanently connected at one of its ends to one of said 1egs, said cross bar carrying a cushon in the form of a tube of elastic material, said cross bar extending toward the other leg, sad other leg having opposite the said cross bar a recess adapted to receive its free end, and the inner member being provided Wth an outwardly and downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper end of the cushion.

In a garment supporter apgrippng device comprising an outer member, an inner member loosely conne'cted at its upper end to the outer member, the outer member being provided near its lower end with downwardly 'extending legs, a cross bar permanently connected at one of its ends to oneof said legs, said cross bar carrying a cushion in the form of a tube of elastic material, mens c'arried by the other leg for engaging the freeend of the cross bar, and the inner member being provided with an outwardly and downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper end of the cushion,

In a garment supporter a gripping device comprsng an outer member, having a. strap opening near its upper end, an inner member having a strap openng near its upper end and a strap opening at its lower end, the outer member beng provided near its lower end with means 'for ho1ding a cushion, a oushion having a portion thereof extending upWardly with respect to' the lower end of the Supporter, said cushion being carried by said holding means, the inner member being provided wth an outwardly and. downwardly extending tongue adapted to embrace the upper face of the cushion, the strap openings each having a cross bar along one edge having midvvay between its ends an opening adapted to per1nit afiexble 'strap to be passed through it, and a fiexble strap extending through the strap openings near the upperends of the members to hinged1y connecttherh and extending along the back of the inner member and through the strap openng at its lower end.
