CORN-KNIFE.
Patented July 3,1877.
lmlmmtmr W351 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MILLSPAUGH, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m CORN-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,704, dated July 3, 18?? application filed April 4, 1877. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MILLSPAUGH, of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn -Knives and .I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to corn-knives; and it consists in the construction of the devices for fastening the knife or blade in the handle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn-knife embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the fastening.
A represents the blade or knife proper, and B the handle.
The handle B is sawed, with a longitudinal slot, 11, extending from the end inward for a suitable distance, to receive the inner end of the blade A. In this inner end of the blade are'made two holes, a, a, and corresponding holes are made in thehandle for the passage of the fastening bolts, screws, or rivets d.
O 0 represent metal clips, placed one on each side of the handle B, and having countersunk holes at or near the ends, through which the bolts, screws, or rivets 01 also pass, and the whole united by nuts h h, screwed on the ends of the bolts, or otherwise, as desired.
The clips 0 O are made concave to fit the convexity of the handle, and at the ends of the clips are side lips 2:, extending farther around the handle than the body of the clip, and together said clips form a strong and durable clamp for the handle.
The clamp thus formed holds the parts firmly together, even if the handle should become split, so that there is no danger of the blade getting loose while working. At the same time the blade can easily be removed for sharpening and other purposes when required, and quickly put together again.
For shipment the parts'are entirely separated, and can be packed so as to take up but little room, and the knife can be put together by anybody.
The clips 0 fit the handle on either side, and with either side or end up.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The corn-knife herein described, consisting of the blade A and slotted handle B, combined with the concave reversible clips 0 and fastening devices D, whereby the parts may be taken apart for transportation, put together by the user, and changed in case of breakage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. MILLSPAUGH.
