UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrros.
ADOLPH GARTNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LOUIS GOMPPER, OF SAME PLACE;
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY BOOT-BLACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,689, dated July 3, 1877 application filed May 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH GARTNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy Boot-Black, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure '1 represents a front view of my improved toy boot-black; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on linear at, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section; and Fig. 4, a detail front view of the operating parts in section on line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The invention has reference to that class of toys in which figures perform certain movements by the action of a clock-train; and it consists of toy figures Which'are worked by a clock-train, so that the arm of one is operated by a horizontally-reciprocating slide-piece, and the head of the other by a vertically-reciprocating slide'piece, forming contact with the pivoted and spring-acted neck portion of the figure.
In the drawing, A represents a clock-train, of any approved construction, which imparts, by a crank-shaft, a, and pivoted link b, motion to a horizontally-guided slide-piece, B, so as to reciprocate the same at each revolution of the crank-shaft. The slide-piece B is connected, by a fixed arm, d, with a second slidepiece, B, moving in the same guides of the inclosing-box of the clock-train as the slidepieceB. A second rigid arm, (1, extends forward at right angles from the connecting-arm d, and is attached to the swinging arm of a toy figure, 0, representing a boot-black. The rod (1 is covered, to be out of sight, by the carpet-bag or other device belonging to a second toy figure, D, which, by preference, is supposed to be a gentleman of color. The toy figure D enjoys the reading of a newspaper while the process of blacking is going on, it moving pensively its head while reading. The motion of the head is accomplished by a second and slower revolving crank-shaft, e, of the clock-train A, that connects, by a pivotlink, f, with a vertically guided and reciprocated slide-piece, l), which comes in contact with the hinged neck portion E of figure D, so as to force the same forward, a band or other spring, g, carrying the neck portion back at the instant when the slidepiece is withdrawn. Thus, a slow and meditative motion of the head of the main figure takes place simultaneously with the polishing of the boots by the bootblack at the feet, forming thus a neat and amusing toy for children.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A toy boot-black having the crank-shaft of a clock-train, a horizontally guided and reciprocated slide-piece, B, and a fixed arm, d, extending at right angles from the slide piece, incombination with the swinging arm of a figure, G, substantially as set forth.
2. A toy boot-black having the combination of a crank-shaft, e, of a clock-train, a vertically guided and reciprocated slide-piece, D, and a hinged and spring-acted neck portion, E, of the toy figure D, to impart intermittent motion to the head of the figure, substantially as specified.
