This invention relates in general to improve ments in calculating machines, and more particu larly to improvements in key-operated calculate ing machines of the multiple order type.
Qbjects of the invention are to provide an ar rangement whereby the machine is' mounted in a desk top with the top casing of the calculat ing machine substantially flush with the desk top, so that vision. of the key tops and the records 19 irom which an operator may be calculating items are brought much nearer to a level, which is oi special advantage when operators are required to handle records of large capacity and dimensions; to provide for assembly of calculating machines within a desk top so that the desk itself forms a rigid supporting casing for the operating mecha= nism of such machines, whereby machines of large ordinal capacity, such as machines ranging upwardly in ordinal capacity from sixteen ordinal go. places, may be rigidly supported against twisting and sagging to which they would be subjected, by
reason of the flexibility of casings therefor resul ing from the length thereof required for enclosing machines of such large ordinal capacity, were they mounted in the customary manner in the usual casings heretofore employed for rigidly sup porting similar machines, but of much smaller ordinarcapacity, in which such twisting and sag= ging does not obtain because of the fact that the 3 0 relatively small number of ordinal mechanisms therein are not of such length as to require a cas= ing of such length that flexing of the casing would inherently result from the length thereof; to provide for assembly of calculating machines '36 within a desk top so that the desk itself forms a casing for such machines and the top casing of the calculating machine bridges the desk opening in which the machine is mounted and seals said opening; to have all of the mechanism of the '40 calculating machine below the normal surface of the desk top, except the manipulative devices for operating the machine; to provide a neater and more practical mounting of a calculating machine on a desk top than prior mountings in which the actuating mechanism was encased in a casing and the casing placed on top of the desk so as to be mounted above the level thereof; and I which the invention may be embodied and practuning ticed, but. without limiting the claimed invention specifically to such illustrative instance or in" stances.

In its present embodiment the invention plied to the assembly in a desk of a calculating machine of the multiple order key driven type, such as shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,972,933 to Dorr E. Felt, and others to Dorr E. Felt, and also in United States Letters Patent No. i,l1i),734 to Kurt F. Ziehm, and United States Letters Patent Nos. 1,357,747, 1,357,748, 1,367,468 and others to the present inventor Joseph A. V. Turck. For convenience the ensuing description will be directed to this use of the invention. The novel features of the present invention are, however, readily susceptible of other valuable application, for example, with other types of adding or calculating machines, such as key-driven or key-set adding or calculating machines, hence theinvention is not confined to the specific use and specific embodiment herein described as an illustrative example.
Referring to the drawings:-
10 indicates a desk of an ordinary type of fiat top desk having two sets of drawers 11 spaced from each other, as usual, and having a fiat top 13 extending over the two sets of drawers 11 and the space between said two sets of drawers. The portion of the top 13 over the space between the two sets of drawers 11 is provided with a rectangular opening 14 extending close to the front edge of the desk and of substantially the same width and length as the width and length of a calculating machine that is to be mounted within said desk top with its operating mechanism beneath and its manipulative devices above the surface of the desk. Depending from and in substantial alignment with the marginal edges 15 is a metallic casing 16 having sides 17 and ends 18 connected with each other by a bottom 19. The casing 13 encloses the calculating machine opening 14, below the top surface of the desk, and is of suiiicient depth to receive and support a calculating machine therein with all its operating mechanism below and all of its manipulating devices for actuating the oper" ating mechanism above the top surface of the desk. The casing 16 is, in the present embodiment of the invention, formed integral with the desk, being secured thereto by marginal flanges 20 that extend outwardly laterally from the sides 17 and ends 18 and that are welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the top metallic plate 21 of the desk. The top metallic plate 21 may be and, as shown, is covered with a covering 22 of soft material.
23 indicates a calculating machine arranged and adapted for mounting within the desk 10 and having a top or key-plate 24 for covering the operating mechanism 25 beneath the said plate 24, and having all of its manipulative devices 26 for actuating the operating mechanism 25 extending through and above the top casing or key-plate 24. The top casing plate 24 is extended beyond the side casing members 17 and the'front and back casing members 18 so as to bridge the desk opening 14 for the machine and extend beyond the marginal edges 15 of the desk opening when the machine is mounted within said opening. The top casing plate 24 is shaped to conform to and form a continuation of the surface of the desk top in substantially the plane thereof so that when assembled within the desk opening 14 it will be substantially flush with the desk top 13 and will seal said desk opening 14 for the machine.
The manipulative devices or the calculating machine comprise depressible keys 30 for actuating the operating mechanism, subtraction levers 35, a zeroizing lever manipulative device 51, and the operating mechanism comprises ordinal actuating mechanism, indicated generally by the reference numeral 32, ordinal accumulator mechanism, indicated generally by the reference numeral'31, and zeroizing mechanism, indicated generally by the reference numeral 37.
As the details of construction of this type of machine may be readily understood from said United States patents, a brief description of the general features of this type of machine, and such parts as are directly concerned with the operation of the present improvement, will be sufficient for an understanding of this invention.
The various instrumentalities of the calculating machine are supported by a frame constituted of side skeleton plates 27 and intermediate skeleton plates 2'? disposed between the various actuating mechanisms of the several orders of the machine and all tied together at suitable points by the rods 28. A. number of columns 29 of nine keys, which constitute a part of the manipulative devices of the machine are provided, each key bein indicated by the refer ence numeral 30, there being column. keys for each nume wheel 31, is c dd, cate of the other con ac and attendant numeral wheel 31. The actuating mechanism corresponding with each column of keys 29 and its numeral wheel 31 includes a column actuator 32 pivoted at the rear end of the machine and adapted to be depressed in different amounts, as determined by the particular key 30 manipulated by an operator. Each key 30 is provided with a stem. 33 extending down and bearing on the corresponding column actuator 32. The column actuator for each order or column 29 of nine keys is moved upwardly on release of an actuated key 3i) by column actuator springs 34, and is adapted to impart calculating movement to the accumulator mechanism 31 at the front of the machine of which the numeral wheels form a part, all as will more fully appear from said prior patents above referred to.
Zeroizing of the accumulator mechanism 31 is efiected by oscillation of zeroizing shaft 43. Such zercizing oscillation of shaft 43 obtained through operation of the following described mechanism. shown more particularly in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
A short transverse rod 36 is journaled in a bearing in the right hand side plate 27 of the frame. A zeroizing segment lever 37 is fixed upon said shaft 36 and pivoted to said segment 37 is a link 38 which is in turn pivoted to a depending lever arm 39 that is pivoted at 40 on the fixed frame. The lower end of said lever 5 arm 39 is pivotally connected by means of a. short link 41 with an arm 42 rotatably mounted with respect to a transverse shaft 43 that is journaled in the fixed frame. The arm 42 is provided with an engaging face 44 adapted to make contact with a second arm 45 fast on shaft 43. A short swinging movement of the lever 37 to the left will, through link 38, lever arm 39, short link 41, arm 42 and rocker arm 45 impart a short rocking oscillatory movement to the shaft 43, in a counter-clockwise direction. Such rocking movement, through known appropriate mechanism connecting the shaft 43 with the accumulator mechanism 31, serving to effect zeroization of the accumulator mechanism 31, as by effecting detrainment of the accumulator mechanism from the actuating mechanism for restoring the numeral wheels to zero.
The calculating machine, after being completely assembled in the framework, comprising the skeleton plates 27 and 27', with the operating mechanism below the top casing plate 24 and the manipulative devices extending through and above the top casing plate, is lowered into the desk opening and mounted therein so that the top casing plate 24 engages over the top covering 22 of the desk and is substantially flush therewith and bridges and seals the desk opening 14. Bars 46 are arranged in contact with the under side of the casing plate 24 on opposite sides of the machine and extend from the front to the back thereof so as to engage the marginal edges 15 in order to facilitate alignment of the machine in the desk and to maintain the mechanism true therein.
Heretofore, owing to the fact that calculating machines have been assembled in casings especially designed to cover theiroperating mechanisms, the manipulative devices for actuating the zeroizing lever 37 have been arranged to 145 roject through the side of the casing.
