This invention relates to a ten-key calculating machine and it aims to provide a generally improved and more compact embodiment operable with greater efficiency.
A prime object is to provide a calculating ma-- chine of this character having a movable, settable pin carriage wherein the settable pins are disposed in a plurality of digital groups, preferably vertical, each group having a plurality of pin columns, usually three, whereby a narrower car riage may be utilized.
Another object is to provide a construction wherein the differential digital actuators are conr trolled by abutment with the settable pins, the 0 pins of each row coacting with a diflerent projection or abutment 01" the associated diiferential digital actuators, the pins being arranged so that the operation of the escapement will dispose a different group of the settable pins, in operative relation to each diiferential digital actuator, through each movement of the escapement.
A further object is to provide a novel structure wherein each key actuates a pusher rod and the r pusher rods in turn actuate the pins of the novel groups of settable pins.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Fig. l is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section through the improved calculating machine;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the settable pin carriage in connection with differential digital actuators;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view showing a modified form of settable pin and portions of the pin carriage in vertical transverse section;
Fig. 6 is a view taken substantially on the line 6-t of Fig. 5;
Fig. '1 is a fragmentary view in cross section of the pin carriage, showing the use of a modified form of the pin;
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the carriage and settable pins of the form of Fig '7;
Fig. 9 is a View in horizontal section, showing the employment of my improvements in a machine having slidable rather than turnable differential digital actuators;
Fig. 10 is a top View of the slidable differential digital actuator employed in Fig. 9; and
Fig. 11 is a side elevation of the setting up lever of Fig. 9, with associated parts.
Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a suitable casing is provided at A which mounts ten keys 2-3 having vertically slidable rods normally resting on a horizontally disposed depressible plate 56. Each key 3 is separately depressible as is usual in machines of the ten-key type.
Suitably guided by the casing A and by a guide casing All, are ten pusher rods 45. Said pusher rods, as best shown in Fig. 3, are arranged in a plurality of rows, preferably vertical and three in number with the center row having four pusher rods and the outer rows having three pusher rods.
Each of said pusher rods A5 is connected to a difierent key rod 58. By way of example, each key rod 58 has a bell crank lever 44 pivoted to it by a pin and elongated slot connection as at 59. Such bell crank levers are pivoted at 6! on horizontal axes within the casing A. Each bell crank lever 44 has its other arm connected by a pin and elongated slot as at 632, or the equivalent, to a diiierent pusher rod 45.
A displaceable spring impelled carriage is shown at 38, mounted for sliding movement transversely of or in front of the pusher rods 45. Said carriage 48 may be generally U shaped in cross section, as shown in Fig. l, and have its free edges slidably mounted in grooves til on a stand or support lth fixed to or stationary on the frame of the machine as at 48a.
Said carriage l8 slidably mounts settable pins ,6 in slots illa provided in opposite walls of the carriage. Said settable pins 65 are arranged, as shown in Fig. 2, in groups of ten, corresponding to the arrangement of the pusher rods 45. The carriage 43, under control of a suitable escapement, is adapted to position one of the ten groups of settable pins Mi, upon each escaping movement of the carriage in alignment with the pusher rods 45. l-lence, each time a key ll) is depressed, one of the pusher rods 45 will be moved forwardly and will actuate or project one pin of the group of pins it then in line with the pusher rods 45, following which, the escapement will be operated to displace the next succeeding group of ten pins it in line with the pusher rods 45, of which group one pin will be projected and the carriage again escape, etc.
The escapement of the carriage 48 is controlled through the depression of the previously mentioned plateM. Pivoted to said plate 64 is a link 5|, which is also pivoted as at Ell to the frame of the machine. Also pivoted to the'plate M is an arm. of a bell crank lever 52. Bell crank lever 52 is pivoted at 50a. to the,.-frarne of the machine. One arm of bell crank lever 52 is pivoted to a link 54 having a slot through which projects an arm Mo on a shaft 53 so that depression of the plate M will cause the shaft 53 to rock on its longitudinal axis and thus actuate a double ended escapement pawl 55, shown in Figs. 1 ,and 2, which cooperates with equidistantly spaced teeth on the lower edge of the carriage M3, and which permit the carriage to escape, upon each rocking of the escapement shaft a distance which disposes a different group of ten settable pins 46 in line with the pusher rods, l5.
Those settable pins it which. are projected by the pusher rods 55, coast with differential digital actuators 5? shown inlthe form of disks or plates journaled on an actuator shaft 5i). There is a differential digital actuator 57 for each group of ten settable pins 46. The settable pins as Oflthe central vertical row of each group coact one with a projection or abutment 56 of the adjacent actuator 51 while the pins 45 of the remaining or outside vertical rows of the same group coact with the projections or abutments 61 and 68, respectively, on opposite sides of the actuator.
The differential digital actuator mechanism may be of the type disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 31,259, filed July 13, 1935.
Retraction or restoration of the pins 65 to normal position iseffected by the engagement of the projecting pins with an inclined or cam plate I98, as the carriage 48 moves back to starting position. It may be pivoted on a vertical axis at |9l so that if the carriage 48 does not move far enough to retract all of the settable pins it, means on the carriage may operate to swing the plate I98 against the projecting pins, and slide them back to starting position.
In the operation of the machine, it will be realized that each time one of the ten keys i3 is depressed, a pusher rod 45 will be moved forwardly, projecting or forwardly sliding the settable pin 45 in its path. The same movement of the key 43 depresses plate 64, rocks the bell crank 52, lowers the link 54 and through its connection with crank 54a turns the escapement shaft 53 on its longitudinal axis and thereby moves the pawl 55 so that the carriage 43 will escape one space or the distance between two teeth 55, corresponding to the spacing of the groups of ten settable pins 45. The carriage remains in this position and a corresponding escapement movement of the carriage takes place with the projection of a pin 46 in each group, each time a key 43 is depressed. The calculating and/or printing operations are effected by the differential digital actuators 51, through coaction of their abutments 66, El and 68 with the projected settable pins. Upon return of the carriage to its initial or starting position, the pins l6 which are in projected position will be restored to their initial position preparatory to the succeeding operation.
A modified form of settable pin which may be used in place of those at MS is disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 at 95. This pin 95 is shown slidably mounted in spaced apart walls iller and 4% of a carriage corresponding to that at Lugs 96 extend from opposite end portions of the pin 95 and furnish shoulders adapted to abut the walls 48a and 48b to limit the movement of the pin in opposite directions. One of the lugs 96 of each pin is adapted to be brazed or welded to the remainder of the pin following assembly of the pin in the walls 48a and 4323. In addition, such modified pin 95 may carry a resilient or spring latch 9i, which is preferably made of wire and has one end anchored in an opening 99 of the pin. This latch 91 has a sinuous portion providing depressions Hill and let which, through the yielding movement of the pin as it slides through openings I52 and 103 of the arm Mia and dill), clip into engagement with the wall lilh to hold the pin in projected and retracted positions, respectively.
In Figs. 7 and 8, a modified form of carriage and settable pins is disclosed. The carriage in this form has spaced apart walls or plates 88 and rollers journaled between them on transverse axes, the rollers traveling on transverse rods 90 secured to the frame of the machine. The walls 88 have openings 88 therethrough in which settable pins 53! are slidably disposed. These pins function like those at Ma and 91, being made of a single strand of wire or other resilient material, having tines 92 and 232 tending to separate at their unconnected ends. The tine 92 at its free end has a sinuous portion like that at El, providing depressions mo and llll adapted to clip into engagement with the adjacent Wall 88 at the slot 88', in a projected and retracted position of the pin, respectively. It is clear that the carriage is provided with ten groups of ten settable pins, arranged or positioned exactly like those at 46 and the same is true of the number and arrangement of the pins 95 with respect to their carriage.
Referring to Figs. 9 to 11, a modified form is disclosed wherein the differential digital actuators are slidable, being particularly vertically movable, as contrasted with the rotatable differential digital actuators hereinbefore described.
In this modified form, a casing is employed to form a base I and a cover or upper section 2. The vertically slidable differential digital actuators are shown at Ill, having teeth at 40 coacting with calculating Wheels as at 62 with which is associated a tens movement mechanism 66. The slides or differential digital actuators I0 through suitable specific mechanism actuate printing means at 38, coacting with a web 96 passing from a paper roll 85 to a platen roller Bl, such rollers being mounted on shafts 84 and 80, respectively.
Each slide ill has a shoulder or projection 51 on one side thereof, a shoulder or projection 52 on the opposite side thereof, and a shoulder 53 in the plane of the slide proper and, hence, between the planes of the abutments or projections 5| and 52.
A settable pin carriage is shown at 35 provided with upper and lower rollers 35 and 36, which travel on rods 34 disposed transversely of the casing and fastened, for instance, to the sides of the cover section 2. Such carriage 35 mounts settable pins 30 corresponding to those at ,6 or 95, being identical in number and arrangement. Thus, one row of each digital group of the pins 31! will form abutments for the projection 5|, the other row of such digital pins 3!! will form abutrnents for the projection 52, while the central row of pins 30 will form abutments for the shoulder 53, the pins 3U, thus, coacting with the differential digital actuators l B] in the same manner which the pins 46 or 95 coact with the rotatable differential digital actuators 51.
Pusher rods 2A. ten in number and arranged identically with the pusher rods 45, and as detailed in Fig. 3, are slidably disposed in openings 39 of a bracket or guide 28 fastened to the side Walls of the cover 2 of the casing.
Adjacent the other ends of said pusher rods 24, bell crank levers 91 are pivoted at 23. Such bell crank levers are pivoted on rods l8 fastened under casing cover section 2, and the remaining arms of such levers are pivoted at 22 to the vertically slidable shafts I6 or depressible keys I! extending above an opening 4 in the cover section 2 through which the pin shafts l6 slide. There are ten of the keys ll conforming to the arrangement of the keys 43 of the previous form. of the invention as detailed in Fig. 4.
Said Figs. 9 to 11 disclose a modified form of the invention employing substantially the same pin carriage mechanism as the other forms in cooperation with differential actuator devices of a different type. The differential actuator de-- vices are no part of the present invention and therefore are not described indetail.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the in- Vention.
What I claim is:
1. In a calculating machine of the ten key type, a pin carriage and settable pins carried by said carriage arranged in digital groups, said pins of each digital group being arranged in a plurality of rows.
2. In a calculating machine of the ten key type, differential actuators, a pin carriage and settable pins carried by said carriage arranged in digital groups, said pins of each digital group being arranged in a plurality of rows, and a plurality of abutment means on said differential actuators each cooperating with one of said rows of pins.
3. In a calculating machine of the ten key type, a pin carriage and settable pins carried by said carriage arranged in digital groups, said pins of each digital group being arranged in a plurality of rows, in combination With a differential actuator for each digital group of pins, each group having the pins thereof arranged in columns shiftable in the path of movement of the corresponding differential actuators.
