Description

H. SWEET 9 2p BUILDING MATERIALS Filed June 28, 1930 CZMWM the lower corners and having notches above and below the middle, the lower notch being located substantially one-third of the height of the shingle from the lower edge so that the root formed by the shingle is not less than double thickness at any place when the tabs of one course are hooked into the lower notches of the preceding course. and substantially or single thickness when the tabs of the alternate courses are hooked into the lower and upper notches respectively of the preceding courses.
4. A roof composed of uniform shingles having sides complementary one to another when reversed, the shingles having tabs on the lower corners and two vertically spaced notches in the sides, the tabs of one course being hooked into the lower nomhes of the preceding course, and the tabs of the next course being hooked into the upper notches oi the one course.
5. A roof composed of uniform shingles having sides complementary one to another when reversed, the shingles having tabs on the lower corners and two vertically spaced notches in the sides, and the successive courses having their tabs hooked in alternation into the lower and upper notches of the preceding courses, the notches being spaced along the sides at about one-third and two-thirds of the height of the shingles and in vertical alignment.
6. A shingle having a generally quadrilateral body with looking tabsat two adjacent corners, and a plurality of notches in each 01 the side edges above the corners to receive the locking tabs of other shingles, said notches including a lower notch spaced from the tabs the proper distance to produce a two-thickness roof, and an upper notch located at such a height that the distance from the locking tab up to the lower notch plus the distance from the locking tab up to the upper notch is less than the height of the shingle by the necessary overlap for a single thickness roof.
