This invention relates to improvements in covers for containers, and more particularly to lock covers.

Among the principal objects which .the present invention has in view are: To provide an improved cover which will lock itself to the body portion of a containerto provide means on the cover which will readily adapt itself to the container;

. to lock the cover to the container by turning the 1:0 cover upon the container; to secure simplicity of construction; operation and minimum cost to o manufacture, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description:

Figure 9 is a perspective view of the modified locking means. o Description: In one speciiicembodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates a` container in general, com- '40 prising a cover 11 and body portion 12. It may be here noted that the construction of thecontainer 10 is of the type generally used to carry comestibles, such as coffee, milk, soup, and so forth. It is of sturdy -1 construction, preferably made of durable cardboard and cylindricalin shape.

14 and 15, the inner one 15 of which may be comprised of a separate piece of material in juxtaposition to the outer ply 14. As here shown, the container and its cover are cylindrical as a resultof which said inner ply 15 will be ring-shaped and preferf upon applying the cover thereto.

We have found it desirable to utilize aiplurality of staples and arrange them successively 10|) thread in the material engaged thereby when the cover 4is applied with a twisting motion. Consequently, when applying the cover with a twisting motion, the same is advanced to its seated position and the burrs 18 thereupon lock the cover securely in that seated position.

Obviously, the cover cannot be unscrewed because of the burrs, and cannot berotated forwardly for removal because of the spiral arrangement of the several locking means, nor can it be 1W As a further constructional feature of the in,

vention, it is to be observed that the staples 16 may be applied to the inner ply or ring 15 of the cover before assembly within the cover. This enables the spurs 17 at the ends of the staple to be bent fiatwise against the outside of the ring 15, and to be included between the two

plies

14 and 15 in the finished cover. These spurs will therefore have a supplementary gripping action to the adhesive employed between the two plies and prevent a relative twisting between those parts when the cover is twisted or attempted to be twisted with respect to the container.

In the modified construction shown in Figures 6 to 9, the container 10, cover 11 and body portion 12 may have the same construction as heretofore described and a plurality of locking means 19 may be applied to one of the telescoping surfaces in a spiral arrangement as described in connection with preceding figures of the drawlng. The locking means of this modification as shown, as a staple, the ends of which provide spurs/ 20 to engage the appropriate part for mounting the staple in place, whereas the burrs 18 of the preceding construction were pressed from the face of the staple, in the present instance we provide burrs 21 formed at the longitudinal edges of the staple projecting in planes perpendicular to the face of the staple.

In the exact showing of Figure 9, it will be observed we are' enabled to thereby provide burrs at both longitudinal edges of the staple and also may provide burrs at both ends of the staple. All of these burrs preferably taper in a common direction and are shouldered in an opposite direction so as to effectively perform the functions ascribed to the burrs 18 in the preceding description. The operation both as to applying the cover and as to locking the same will be performed in accordance with and in a like manner as 1n the preceding description. ,Y

We claim:

1. A container as characterized comprising in combination with a container body portion, a cover fitting said body portion, said cover being comprised of two plies, locking means clamped between the two plies and projecting through the wall of the inner ply adjacent the body portion, and burrs on said locking means for engaging the body portion.

2. A container as characterized comprising in combination with a container body portion, a cover fitting said body portion, said cover being comprised of two plies, a plurality of staples clamped between the two plies and projecting through the wall of the inner ply adjacent the body portion, and burrs on said staples for engaging the body portion.

3. A container as characterized comprising in combination with a container body portion, av cover fitting said body portion, said cover being comprised of two plies, a plurality of staples clamped between the two plies and directed in a circumferential direction, burrs on said sta-y ples and projecting through the wall of the inner ply adjacent the body portion for securing said cover to the body portion in locked condition.

4. A container as characterized comprising in combination with a container and body portion, a cover fitting said body portion and applicable' thereto by a screw motion, said cover being comno prised of two plies, locking means clamped between the two plies and projecting through the wall of the inner ply adjacent the body portion, and b'urrs on said locking means for engaging the body portion, said burrs extending in a direc- 115 tion to permit said screw motion to apply to the cover but resisting reverse screw motion.
