Description
CARL FOGELBERG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,06 l, dated J une 19, 1877 application filed October 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL FOG-ELBERG, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Organ-Pipes;-aiid I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. ret erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in organ-pipes; and consists of a continuous pipe without any side opening, and provided in its lower end (or upper end, it the pipe is reversed) with an internal mouth-piece terminating in a narrow slit inside the pipe. in combination with a division-wall that terminates in a sharp wedge a little above the slit in the mouth-piece.
By so constructing organ-pipes I amable to produce very soft and beautiful tones. Another advantage is that the pipes may be grouped and located as near each other as may be desired, and even touching each other, both on the sides and in front and rear, without impairing the tones on account of the pipes not having any side openings or voicers on the outside, as this is all arranged within the very pipe itself.
The pipe is shown in the drawing of a rectangular torm; but any other form may be used to equal advantage, such as square, round, oval, &c.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig.8 represents a crosssection on the line C D. and Fig. 4 representsa cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawings.
a a represents the organ-pipe, made open from end to end, but having no opening on any of its sides. In one end is titted closely the mouth-piece b, that extends a short distance into the pipe and projects somewhat below the extreme end of the pipe. The mouthpiece b is provided with a longitudinal channel, 0, terminating in its upper end as a thin slit or opening. (I, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The pipe at a is longitudinally divided by means of a division-wall, e. that terminates in its lower end as a sharp wedge-shaped projection, e, the extreme end of which is located a short distance from the upper termination of the slit or opening d, as shown in Fig. 2. The wind that is forced through the channel cand outthrough the thin slitd is divided by the sharp wedge-shaped projection e and its wall 0, by which the air is set in a vibratory motion, producing a soft and beautiful tone, without the need of side openings on the pipe, as is usually the case.
This my improved pipe may be used for ex haust, as well as for compressed, air, it so desired.
The pipes and its division-walls and mouthpieces may be made of wood or metal without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim In combination with the continuous pipe a, having the division-wall c, with its projecting sharp edge e, the mouth-piece b, havin channel c and slit or opening (I, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL FOGELBERG.
