Description

H. HOHNER.
ACCORDION.
APPLICATION FILED 11111.23. 1908.
PATENTED JULY 28, 1908.

. wwm/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS HOHNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ACCORDION.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS HOHNER, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Accordions, of which 'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an accordion provided with improved means for rendering the tone more powerful and effective without interfering with the free manipulation of the instrument.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of an accordion embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an end view thereof, with the sound deflector removed; and Fig. 3 a
section through one of the accordion heads on line 33, Fig. 2, with the sound deflector in position.
The top or head 20 of the accordion is provided with the usual key-board 21, the keys 22 of which operate the sound controlling valves 23 by rods 24, as usual. Upon head 20 is fitted a rectangular frame or shallow sound box within which the valves 23 are located. This box consists of a pair of parallel lon itudinal rails 25, 26, and a pair of paralle end plates 27. Rail 25 extends from one face of keyboard 21, between keys 22 and rods 24, so as not to interfere with the free manipulation of the valves. Rail 26 rojects from the face of head 20 parallel to eyboard 21, and its base is consequently at right angles to that of rail 25. Rail 26, as well as end plates 27, are set back from the edges of head 20, while rail 25 is shorter than key-board 21, its length being equal to that of rail 26. The sound box, constructed as Specification of Letters Patent.

described, is provided with a sound deflector adapted to concentrate the sound waves and direct them towards the hearers, so that thereby the volume and intensity of the tone is increased. This deflector is made in the form of a removable cover slidable within grooves 28 of rails 25, 26, and provided with one or more sound emitting openings. As shown, the deflector consists of a hood 29, the flanged edges 30 of which engage the grooves 28. From the apex of the hood extends, at right angles thereto, a bell 31 which projects over edge of head 20, so that the size of the bell is not limited by its distance from the head.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the volume of tone is greatly increased without interfering with the free manipulation of the instrument, while by making the sound deflector removable, the sound box may be readily opened to gain ac cess to the valves and prevent the accumulation of dust.
I claim:
An accordion having a head, a key-board, keys and valves, a first grooved rail projectin from the key-board between keys and vaflves, a second parallel grooved rail projecting from the face of the head, and a sound deflector removably engaging said grooved rails, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Manhattan,) N. Y., this 22nd day of January, 1908.
HANS HOHNER.
