rIhis invention relates to containers have ing snap closures and aims to provide a container in which such a closure is equipped with an accessory receptacle. The nature of the invention may be readi ly understood by reference to one illustrative construction embodying the invention and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In said drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the container in which the closure is shown engaging the mouth of the container;
Fig. 2 is a similar section in which the closure has been flexed to release the container; and
3 is an inside plan view of the closure.
The illustrative closure is ofthe type in which distortion or flexure of the closure top causes the closure skirt or flange to release or grip the mouth of the container. Closures of this character are Well known and will be described here only generally. Such closures comprise a flexible metal top 10 having a depending flange or skirt 11 slit or notched at a plurality of spaced points 18 to provide independent container engaging elements 14. These in the present case' are bent adjacentl their free edges to provide inwardly projecting flanges or gripping elements 15. The
730 closure engages a container mouth 16 having an inwardly inclined surface 17 which serves as a cam to force the closure into tight engagement with the rim 18 of the mouth under the gripping action of the elements 15. When the top is bowed upwardly slightly as in Fig. 1, the closure slrirt is in position to grip the container; but when the top is pressed downwardly to distort it into a concave form, as indicated at 19 in Fig. 2, the closure skirt 1l is caused to spread and release the container. In most types of closures of this character the closure will remain in the condition illustrated inyFig. 2 until the closure skirt is pressed inwardly so as to cause the top 10 to snap out into the position illustrated in Fig. 1, in which position the closure again grips the container.
In the present case a gasket made of layers 2O of coated or other waterproofed cardboard serves to maintain a tight seal. The satisfactory attachment of accessories to closures of this character has been difficult because of interference with flexibility of the closure top. Anything which interfered with its free flexibility rendered it either inoperative 55. er operative with difficulty.
l have found that it is pessible to attach an accessory to the top if clearance be allowed between die accessory and the top so as not to interfere with the flexing of the latter. The bottom surface of the accessory is designed so as to be spaced from the top at all times (except for a small centrally located attaching area), and is connected with it in such a manner as not to interfere with flexing thereof.A Such spacing or clearance is effected in the present instance by interposing` a spacci' in the form of a washer 21 between the receptacle and the inner face of the closure top. An appropriate form of rivet 24 connects the receptacle to the closure top at the center of the latter. The receptacle, which in the present case is shown in the form of a cup 22, has its bottom 23 curved to increase the aforesaid clearance. As will5 be seen from Figs. 1 and 2 the connection of the receptacle to the top does not in any way interfere with a free flexing of the latter. The form of the receptacle may, of course, be varied to suit particular requirements. 1m80 the present case it is used as a measure for the pulveriZed or granular contents of the container Q5. ln other instances the receptacle may be of a form to hold means for treating the contents of the receptacle, such5 as humidifying or moisture absorbing means.
It is thus possible to adapt this type of closure (inherently of great utility) to a field at use in which it has heretofore not been available. f'. 90
Obviously the invention is not limited to the details of the illustrative device since these may be variously modified. Moreover1 it is not indispensable all features of the ini vention be used conjointly since various fea-195) tures n lay be advantageously used in different con'ibinations and sub-combinations.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. ln a container of the character described the combination comprising a metallic snap havin@ a flexible top which is adapted to have a substantial change in its curvature, and an accessory receptacle carried on the under face of said closure, and a device for connecting said receptacle vto the flexible top in a limited area adjacent' its center, the adjacent faces of said receptacle and closure top being spaced at all points except the point of connection, so as not to interfere with the free flexure of the top.
