My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in supports and is designed to provide a support for portable receptacles, and more particularly for golf bags. The purpose of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for supporting a golf bag in such a way that any one of the clubs carried therein may be readily available for extraction therefrom when it is to be used, and also that the support may be easily and effectively attached to the bag when it is to be used and readily detached therefrom and stowed in the bag when not in use, and also that the support may remain attached to the bag ready for use While the bag is be ing carried by the player on the course. The particularly novel and useful feature of my device is the means which I provide for attachment of the device to the bag and for relating the supporting media to the attaching means. I have produced a novel form of clamp to which the legs of my device are pivoted in such a way that they automatically assume the correct position to sustain the bag when it is placed in the proper position for extracting a club therefrom, and support the bag in a position most suitable for the club to be inserted in the bag and the bag to be picked up by its handle or carrying strap. (See Fig. 1.)
In the drawings filed herewith I have illustrated and have hereinafter fully described one specific embodiment of my invention, but it is to be distinctly understood that I do not consider my invention limited to said specific embodiment but refer for its scope to the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device applied to a golf bag in supporting position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation in the same position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation, similar to Fig. 2, showing my device collapsed for insertion into the golf bag.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation similar to Fig. 2, showing my device in extended position, but removed from the bag.
9 is a side elevation of the clamping taching the legs L, L to the golf bag B. T he clamping means C has two parallel portions 1, 1 connected by the straight portion 2 at right angles thereto and forming a tongue for insertion into the bag B. At right angles to the portions 1, 1, the parallel portions 3, 3 extend outwardly over the rim R of the bag B. From these parallel portions 3, 3, there extend downwardly and inwardly the portions 1, 4 from which there, are bent upwardly the parallel portions 5, 5 having loops 6, 6 and connected by the portion '7 curved to conform to the curvature of the bag B. It is to be noted (see Fig. 3) that the portions of the clamp C are so designed and disposed that whenthe clamp C is attached to the bag B, the portions 1, 1 bear 7 against the inner surface of the bag B and the portions 5, 5 bear against the outer surface of the bag B, thus providing two parallelly disposed sets of clamping means to securely clamp my device to the bag B, and that the portion 7 fitted about the bag B, bears against the underside of the rim B.
To mount the legs L, L upon the clamping means C, I provide a heavy resilient wire W passed through the loops 6, 6 of the clamp C and having its ends 8, 8 attached to the legs L, L by staples 9, 9. Immediately above each staple 9 near the upper end 10 of each leg L, the wire W has a slightly outwardly bent portion 11. The central portion 12 of the wire W is slightly curved in a continuous are between the bends 13, 13 of the wire W between the portions 11, 11 and the portion 12. This portion 12 is disposed through the legs V L, L immediately adjacent their upper ends It is to be noted that the bends 18, 13 of the wire W are somewhat spaced from the 5 outer sides of the legs L, L by reason of the portions 11, 11 and the disposition of the portion 12. These bends 13, 13 cause the legs L, L normally to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the resilience of the wire W 10 causing the legs L, L to be distended when they are released, after having been compressed, as illustrated in Fig. 4;, to permit the device to be stowed (when not in use) within the bag B.
It is to be noted that my device is applicable to both rigid and flexible golf bags. When it is applied to a flexible bag, the legs L, L co-act with the golf clubs G in the bag to form a tripod.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a golf bag support, the combination of a clamp formed of a single wire having two straight portions for insertion into the bag, two outwardly bent portions to arch the upper rim of the bag, two resilient loops extending downwardly from the outwardly bent portions, and a portion connecting the W ends of these loopsand curved to conform d to the curvature of the bag, and a coil formed in each of said loops closely adjacent the said connecting portion; a yoke passing loosely through said coils; and a leg attached at each end of said yoke.
2. In a golf bag support, the combination of a clamp formed of a wire having two portions for insertion into the bag, two outwardly bent portions to arch the upper rim of the bag, two loops extending downwardly from the outwardly bent portions, and a portion connecting the ends of these loops and curved to conform to the curvature of the bag, and a coil formed in each of said loops closely adjacent the said connecting portion; a yoke passing through said coils; and a leg attached at each end of said yoke.
8. In a golf bag support, the combination of a clamp having two portions for insertion into the bag, twoloops extending outwardly and downwardly from the first two portions respectively, and a portion connecting the ends of these loops, and a coil formed in each of said loops closely adjacent the said connectin g portion; a yoke passing through said coils; and a leg attached at each end of said yoke.
41. In combination with a receptacle, a clamp having two portions for insertion into the receptacle, two loops extending outwardly and downwardly from the first two portions respectively, and a portion connecting the ends of these loops, and a coil formed in each of said loops closely adjacent the said connecting portlon; a yoke passlng through said coils; and a leg attached at each end of said yoke.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HUGH B. G. GALT.
