Description

A. C. ROUNDS July 4, 1933.
BRUSH Filed May 31, 1930 Patented July 4; 1933 TNT BRUSH Application filedplay 31,
My invention relates to brushes, particularly brushes of the so-calledreversible type described in Patent No. 573,198, issued Dec. 15, 1896, to B. le". This type of 5 brush consisted in afhandle member hitherto vmade outef relatively cheap material, such as wood, which would tend to become worn Y intime and a head member having suitable brush means, such as bristles projecting from the lower end thereof. v According to the Baxter ,patent his i nprovement` in the art consisted in providing aconcaversurfacer on the lower surface of the handle member and a convex surface on the upper surfaceof the head member so that the brush can be readily reversed and when the parts were tightened togethergeould be 'readilyfaligned t was thus only necessary in-Baxter,-after the front bristles had become worn in use, to -unloosen '20 a threaded member and4 turn the brush around and thus any worn rearbristles would become the front bristles so the life yof the brush head would be practically doubled.
I 'have found out in practice that the head` members including` the bristles thereof, had tended to Wear out quite quickly in; use and my present invention includes the idea of having a head member made of more or less permanent material and whichmay be made lconneeti'on with said ornamental handle mem ber the usual head'member which isv intended to be replaceable. 'l thus provide al construction in which the head members maybe read- "35 ily replaced without going` to the expense of buying an additional" ha-ndle member and l have provided a handlefmember which may thus be made of relatively expensive ornamented material morebeautiful than any produced hitherto. I thus with an initial, possibly somewhat greaterlirst cost, am en.-
abled to provide anornamental brush of this type whiehlis adapted to have the replace- Sable head vmembersv sold separately and replaeedtherein andthus have a brush, parts of'iwhich may be easilyireplaced at a relatives 'Y Y 'ly smaller cost than-the cost/:of uying a new brushfof the old type. A 'Y g 'Myfinventien is particularly adapted forv use in ,so-called dust brushes of a Well known of ornamental material and of providing,` in i 1930. serial No. 457,706;
type,V wherein the bristle portion thereof and overlapping handle portion comprise long narrow elongated members in order that the front end of the brush may get into narrow places toclean them out. It is obvious that 53%;
in use the front partof the brush will tend to vbecome much 4more worn than the rear part ofthe brush and hitherto it has usuallyv been necessary when this has been the c a'se toV throw the entire brush away. An object of my invention therefore. is to provide va dust brush of this type of pleasing` appearance in which the brush member itself can. be readily replaced as desired. Y
p As-w'il'l be apparent from the disclosure-of @il *the Baxter patent, brushes of this type have had a male member 'protrudi-ngupwardly through the handle member and an unsightly nut'on the top `of the handle member to secure the'handle member to the head member. further feature of my invention relates to the fact that l embed one of the attaching` members inthe lower surface only of the handle member so as to lprovide a handle member having an ornamental unbroken unapertuijed' top surface more pleasing to the user and one which will not tend to tear or catch against the users clothing or other objects.v lbsg` lieve l am therefore the first to realizethat a brush of this description could bemanufac- 8i tured without oneof the attaching members beingjvisible at all on the uppersurface of the handle member. ln my preferred embodiment, l provide a female .socket depending from the handle memberyan aperture in the head member and screw 4means for securf ing the head member to the handle member. It is thus apparent that with this construction I am enabled to provide a type of atcaching member .wherein the screwineanscan'be readily applied from underneath by y means of the screw member without interfer- :en tu ence-from the `brush means or stiff 'bristles f projecting downwardly from the head memoer. Y 'y y l These and such other obliects'of my invention asmay hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of embodiments thereof such as shown in the aecompanying draWinO'. 1
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is ra side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the head memberl and the head member attaching portion of the handle member being shown in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a view generally similar to Fig. 2 showing the head member and screw attaching means in detached position.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of my improved embodiment through the attaching means thereof.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through the attaching means of a slightly different embodiment of my invention. In the drawing, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, 1Q generally indicates a brush constructed according to the principles of my invention. Said brush includes the handle member 12. One feature of my invention relates to improvements in thehandle member itself. Said handle member 12 is preferably shaped with the handle forming end 14 and a front end 16 having a bottom surface 18 for attachment of the head member thereto. As stat-ed, one feature of my invention consists in providing a handle member 12 of more beautiful appearance than any constructed hitherto,which may be made `out of more or less permanent mate-l rial such as bakelite, Celluloid, metal, wood, etc., having an unaperturedunbroken top surface 20. Said brush 10 includes in combination with the handle member 12, the head member 22 which is preferably constructed of relatively cheap material such as wood and which has the top surface 24 adapted to abut the bottom surface 18 of said handle member anda bottom surface having brush means projecting downwardly therefrom. lIn my preferred embodiment,`said brush means 26 comprises the bristles 26 embedded at desired` intervals in the head member 22. :In order that said head member may be revolvable and replaceable relative to said handle member, I preferably form one of said contacting surfaces 18 or 24 of concave formation from one side to the other and the .otherconvex from one side to the other; in my preferred embodiment, the lower surface 18 of the handle 12 preferably is concave from side to side and the upper' surface 24 of tbe head member 22 preferably convex from side to side.
I also provide suitable means to detachably secure said head member 22 to said handle member 12. f For this purpose I provide an attaching member 28 in association with the lower portion of said handle member 12-and an attaching member 30 in' association with the headmcmber r22, one of said members comprising a male member, the other of said members comprising a female member. In my preferred embodiment, the attachingmember 28 is embedded in the'lower portion of said handle member 12 substantially centrally thereof. The head member is preferably provided with the aperture 32 having thc counter-sunk socket 84 in the lower end thereof. The attaching member 30 is adapted to cooperate with said aperture 32 in said head member and said attaching member 28 in said handle member to secure said members together. In the preferred embodiment shown in Figs. 1-4, said attaching members are constructed as follows: The threaded socket member 28 is provided with a hear 35 adapted to be suitably embedded in said handle member front end substantially centrally thereof. This may be done in any suitable manner, such as by counter-sinking it in the lower surface 18 of said handle member 12 after it has been made or by locating it in the mould while the bakelite or other composition material ofthe handle member is moulded and pressed around it. Said socket member 28 is provided with the integral threaded socket 36 projecting downwardly therefrom internally threaded as at 38 and in this instancethe other attaching member functioning in association with the head member 22 comprises the screw 30 having the head 40 adapted to be embedded in said aperture socket. 34 in said head member and the threaded end 42 thereof adapted to project through said aperture 32 and into the threaded socket 38 of said handle member to detachably secure said members together. It is obvious, however, that the character of said attaching members 28 and 30 may be reversed, thus in the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the attaching member comprises the bolt 28 having the head 35 embedded in the handle member 12 and the threaded bolt end 28 projecting downwardly through the aperture 32 in said head member and the other attaching member comprises the `nut 30 internally threaded and adapted to be secured around the end of said bolt 28 within the socket 34 to detachably secure said members together. I prefer the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-4 as it is relatively easier, if desired, with the medium of a screw driver', to thread the screw upwardly through the aperture 32 and into the threaded socket 38 between the bristles 26 than it is to spread the bristles apart and to thread the nut 40 on to the projecting bolt 28 from said handle member. There either of the embodiments are emi ployed, however', in order to detach the head member 22 from said handle member 12, it is merely necessary to unscrew or otherwise detach the attaching member 30 adapted to function with the head member 22, when said head member22'm'ay be removed from said handle member 12. As also explained inthe Baxter patent, if it is desired merely to twist the brush. around so that the unworn rear portion of the bristles 26 in said head member may be switched aroundto become the front portion, it is merely necessary to partially unscrew or detach the threaded member 30, when, as explained in detail in said Baxter patent., the brush may-be switched around so as to make the fresh rear end thereof the new front end thereof. e y
` It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiments shown andthat various deviations may be made therefrom without departing vfrom the spirit substantially centrally thereof, a replaceable cooperating narrow head member having an attaching socket substantially centrally thereof, a top surface adapted to abut the bottom surface vof said handle member and a bottom surface having brush means projecting downwardly therefrom, one of said contacting surfaces being concaved and the outer convexed from one side to the other to rest one within the other and firmly retain the members from member adapted to cooperate with said aperture in said head member and said attaching member in said handle member to secure said members together, one of said attaching members comprising a threaded male member and the other a threaded female member.
In testimony whereof I afX my signature.
