Description

. A. C. GOULD.
DEVICE FOR PREVENTING THE UNROLLING 0F TAPE, &c. mom
SPOOLS.
No. 191,581. Patented June 5,1877.
WITN E55E5 PETERS, PNOTOJJTHDGRAFHER, WASHING'ION D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR GOULD, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
iMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR PREVENTING THE UNROLLING 0F TAPE. &c., FROM SPOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,581, dated June 5, 1877; application filed April 9, 11377.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR. G. GOULD, of Brookliue, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Device for Preventing the Unrolling of Tape, 8110., from Spools, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a device to be used in connection with a spool of tape, braid, or ribbon, for the purpose of preventing the tape, &c., from running off the spool when in ordinary use, or when a piece of the same has been out off.
The invention consists of a piece of wire having its ends bent at right angles, and inserted in opposite sides of a spool on whichis wound tape, braid, or ribbon, and extending up over the outer surface of the tape, 850., the wire being doubled on thepart that passes over the outer surface of the coil, so that in passing the tape, 860., through the upper portion of the wire loop, and returning it under the doubled portion, the tape will be held in place on the spool, and prevented from unrolling or becoming loosened on the spool.
The usual method of retaining the tape, &c., in place on the spool after cutting off a piece is to put a pin in the tape at its end, and if the pin happens to come out, the roll of tape will become loosened and require to be rewound.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a spool of tape or braid with my invention applied.
A is an ordinary spool, upon which is wound a piece of tape, braid, or ribbon, B. O is a piece of wire, bent in the form shown in Fig. 1. The ends d d are bent at right angles to the sides 0, and are inserted, one end in each side of the center of the spool A. The wire extends over the outside of the braid or tape, and upon the top is bent over twice, so as to form a loop, as shown in Fig. 1. The end b of the tape is passed under the lower piece a ot the loop, and then returned over the same between the folds of the loop, so as to be held sufficiently tight to prevent it from unrolling of its own accord, and yet to be easily drawn through the same.
It will thus be seen that, however much of the tape or braid may be unwound from the spool, the remainder will be held in place and prevented from unwinding.
One of the arms or side pieces of the frame 0 may be dispensed with, and the part d of the opposite or remaining arm be passed through the center of the spool, it desirable,
What I claim as my invention is- A tape or braid guard consisting of a single piece of wire, 0, with the bent ends d d and the double loop a, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
A. O. GOULD.
