rl'his invention relates to an improved illuminated display device, and has particular reference to a device of this kind adapted to be placed at convenientA points in villages 5 and cities for exhibiting to tourists any desired road and advertising matter.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the above hind which is attractive, simple and durable in construction, and in which the road information and advertising matter may be conveniently changed from time to time.
Specific objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective viewV of an illuminated display device embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section thereof partly broken away.
viiigure 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational View showing a portion of .one of the sheets bearing road information or advertising matter and applied to the windows of the device shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
'fl the present invention consists of a portable stand adapted to be placed at any convenientV location for the display of road information and advertising matter of especial interest to tourists, and comprising a base 5 having a hollow standard 6 rigid with and centrally rising therefrom. Rotatably mounted on the upper end of the standard 6 is an upright casing 7 of polygonal form in horizontal section and having glass windows or panels 8 in the sides thereof. The glass windows or panels S have the road information and advertising matter applied to the inner surfaces there/ofso that the same may be readily viewed l from the several sides of the casing 7, any desired particular side being brought to View by simply rotating the casing 7 by hand. ifi lamp 9 is carried by the upper end of the standard 6 within the casing 7 for illuminating the road information and advertising matter on the panels 8 so that the attention Referring more in detail to the drawin 1932. Serial No. 598,824.
of tourists will be attracted to the device. The lamp 9 is preferably electrical and supplied with current from a suitable source by means of conductor wires l passing upwardly through the base and standard 6. The bottom wall 11 of the casing 7 is centrally mounted on the upper end of the standard 6 as generally indicated at 12, whereby the casing 7 is adapted to rotate freely about the vertical axis of the standard 6.
While the advertising matter and road information n'iay be painted or otherwise provided on the panels 8, it is preferably printed on translucent sheets of paper or like material, and these sheets are adhesively attached to the inner surfaces of the panels 8. @ne of these sheets is shown in Figure l at 13, the same having gumined edges for convenient attachment to the desired panel, as at il. Y
The casing 7 includes corner posts 15 having guides 16 formed on their vertical edges, so that the panels 8 may be readily slipped into place between opposed guides from the top of the casing 7, the casing having a removable cover or top member 17 fitted over the top of the body of casing 7 so that access to the panels 8 may be readily had for insertion or removal thereof. Cross members 18 connect the upper ends of the corner posts 15. Each cross member 18 is substantially U-shaped in cross section, and includes relatively short and long inner and outer walls as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The short inner wall of each member is arranged beneath the upper edge of the adjacent panel 8, the latter projecting above the corner pests so that it canrbe easily grasped for removal. The relatively long outer wall of each cross member also extends above the corner posts to support the cover 1T, and terminates in a plane with the upper edge of the adjacent panel, and in spaced parallel relation thereto to permit the insertion of the lingers between the panel and said wall when grasping the panel for removal.
It is to be understood that the road maps or information and advertising matter may be displayed in dierent positions and ways upon the panels 8, such as by placing advertising matter above or below, or both Y above and below a road map, on one or more of the panels.
Vhile the construction shown and described illustrates a practical embodiment of' the invention, minor changes may be made without departinfbr from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Vhat we claim as new is:
An illuminated sign comprising a casing including corner posts of channel formation, transparent panels removably supported between each pair of corner posts and extending above the latter toiacilitate their removal, cross members connecting the corner' posts at the upper ends thereof, each member being substantially U-shaped in cross section and including relatively short and long inner and outer spaced walls, said long outer wall extending above the corner posts and terminating in a plane with the upper edge of the adjacent panel and in spaced parallel relation thereto, and a flanged cover removably supported by said outer walls of the respective cross members. Y
In testimony whereof we aiix our signatures.
ORA R. MESSNER. ELVIN LOUGI-I.
