Description

.4 Ill 2% n 'I/IIIIIIIIII/II/III/IIII/IIIIIIIIIIII/lIII/Ill/l/ INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Nov. 16; 1937.
F, B. LOCKERT ILLUMINATED STREET MARKER Filed May 11, 1956 Patented Nov. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to an improvement in illuminated street marker.
The invention further relates to new and useful improvements in street lamps and more particularly it pertains to a novel form of construction for lamp housings used in connection with street lighting apparatus.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct the lamp housing with panels bearing information or other data which may be displayed by the housing or casing, and may be changed. at will.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a display stand which is permanent in nature and which is also veryattractive.
Another object of the invention is to provide a panel for the casing for indicating the block number.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a casing having display panels which may be interchanged at will.
The novel features that I consider characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of the specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved street 'marker and display casing mounted on a supporting post.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1 showing the inside of the display casing and street marker.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, l0 represents a metal post or pipe having a central opening I2 extending therethrough. The post II] is mounted in a concrete base or standard 14. A casing I6 made preferably of metal is mounted or secured on the top of the post In. The casing I6 has four side portions I8, and a bottom 20. The top 22 of the casing I6 is tapered and is of pyramidalshape and comprises four sides 24. Each side portion 18 of the casing I6 has openings 26 and 28 for the reception of panels of glass 39 and 32 respectively. The sides 24 of the top 22 are also provided with openings 34 which are adapted to receive panels of glass 36.
Angular strips 38 may be made integral with the side portions I8 of the casing H5 or they may be Welded or otherwise secured thereto, and are spaced at opposite sides of the openings 28 so as to form channels 39 for holding the panels of glass 32. There are angular strips 40 spaced at opposite sides of the openings 26 for holding the panels 39 in place in the openings. The openings 34, 5 in the top 22 have angular strips 42 on two sides and larger angular strips 44 on the other two sides so that the panels of glass 36 are retained in position in the openings 34.
The bottom side 20 is provided with a central 10 opening 48. An incandescent lamp 48 extends through the opening 46 into the interior of the casing 16 and provides illumination. The numoral 50 indicates the electrical conductors connecting the lamp 48 to a source of energy (not shown).
The panels of glass 36 carry markings to indicate the block number in a city. The panels of glass 39 bear a street marking, and the panels of glass 32 are provided with advertising or other 20 display matter. The panels 32 may be interchanged at will.
The lamp 48 illuminates the casing so that the street marking, the block number and also the advertising displaycan be seen at night even in a moving vehicle. The lamp 48 may be dispensed with, if desired. Each street intersection should be provided with four of the street markers and/or display devices.
The display casing l6 may be placed in front of cafes or other places of business or in the public parks.
My invention is to provide a street marker and display device which is both attractive and useful. Street markers of my improved design are cheaply manufactured, and it is obvious that my device while shown to be illuminated may be constructed and used without the illuminating features as a street marker and display device for numerous purposes. 40
Although in accordance with the provision of the patent statute the invention is described as embodied in concrete form, it is to be understood that the apparatus shown in the drawing and described in the above specification is merely illustrative and that the invention is not limited thereto since alterations and modifications will readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art without departing from the true spirit of the invention or the scope of the annexed claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In an illuminated street sign, a casing comprising a pyramidal-shaped top, a plurality of sides and a bottom portion, each side of the pyramidal-shaped top having an opening provided with a panel of glass carrying a street number, each of the said sides having a square opening provided with a panel of glass carrying advertising matter, the said sides having a second opening of rectangular shape spaced above the said square opening and the rectangular opening provided with a panel of glass carrying a street 2,099,446 a a. w M
name, the said bottom of the casing having a central opening and an incandescent lamp extending through said opening into the casing for illuminating the panels of glass, and a supporting post to which the said bottom of the casing is secured. V
