Description
v. E. CORNELL METALLIC RECEPTACLE AND CLOSURE THEREFOR 2 Filed Sept. 26, 1931 MWQ WI I H' Patented May' 30, 1933' I UNITED STATES PATENfIl {OFFIC VERNON E. CORNELL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, .ASSIGNOR T0 CORNELL SECURITIES CORPORATION, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE METALLIC RECEIPTACLE AN D CLOSURE THEREFOR Application filed September 26, 1931. Serial No. 565,217.
This invention is an improvement in closure devices for use on steel drums, barrels, of other metallic containers and relates more particularly to such devices which may be quickly applied to the containers to clamp and seal the head or closure tightly in position.
One of the objects of the invention'resides in forming a clamping ring of the type described, which, in applying it to clamp and seal a head in place on a container, will snap into clamping position.
A further object of the invention is to uniformly distribute the clamping forces about the periphery of the ring and container head.
Another object is to provide a simple means for clamping heads on metallic receptacles, such as drums or barrels, for storing and shipping liquids such as oil, in the form.
of a split, channelled, contractible clamping ring for drawing the flange of the cover tightly down against the bead of the receptacle to form a liquid-tight seal between the cover and receptacle.
A still further object is to so form the clamping ring that partof the periphery thereof will be formed about a given center, while another portion of the periphery is formed about another center whereby the interlockingends of the ring may be snapped together more readily to clamp the ring in place on a receptacle and whereby the closed ring will be prevented from springing open accidentally under shock.
Other objects and advantages will become more apparent from the following description of my invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference, characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a metallic receptacle showing my invention applied in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view ofthe clamping and sealing ring and illustrates the method of forming different portions of the ring periphery about different centers.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section of a receptacle showing the clamping ring in place andtightly clamping and sealing the cover on the receptacle.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of one end of the clamping ring.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the other end of the clamping ring.
Figure 6 is a section taken online 66 of.
scribed and claimed a clamping device for the heads of metallic receptacles, similar in many respects to the present invention. However, here are important, novel differences which will appear from the following description of an embodiment of the present invention. v
In the drawing I have illustrated .a'n emf bodiment of my invention applied to a metallic receptacle 1 such as a drum, barrel or the like. The receptacle is usually-provided at its openend with a bead rolled outwardly as at 2. A cover 3, having an outwardly extending annular, concavo convex flange 4 fits into the open end of the receptacle as shown, the flange 4 being supported by the head 2 of the receptacle. An annular acking 5 may be interposed between the ange 4 and the head 2 to provide a cushion seat for the flange and to further insure a liquid tight substantially C-shaped. One end of the ring is slightly enlarged for a portion of its length as indicated at 7 for receiving the other end of the ring 8 in telescopic relation when the ring is contracted about the end of the receptacle for clamping the cover thereon.
l have provided means for securing the ends of the split ring together in interlocked relation when the ring is contracted about or more projections or fingers 9 which are 9 inclusive of the drawing, it being noted preferably formed integrally with the ring material-and extend outwardly of the ring end 8 into the path of projections or-fingers 10 formed in the'enlarg'ed ring end 7. The respective projections9 and 10 are arranged in aligmnent so that by telescoping the ends 7 and 8 of the ring the downwardly projecting fingers-10 will override the upwardly extending projections 9 and snap-downward to be received in the openings 11 formed in the end 8 of the ring by .pressing the projections 9 outwardly of the ring periphery.
The respective fingers 9 and 10 are preferably formed by stamping the same in the ring material and pressing them outwardly and inwardly respectively in substantially parallel planes to each other. The formation of these fingers may be better understood by referring more particularly to Figures 4 to that where a plurality of such fingers is employed as shown, an opening is provided in the ring material between each adjacent finger for receiving the respective fingers of the other end of the ring when the two ends are telescoped one within the other-in ring contracted position. The fingers 9 and 10 formed in each end of the ring extend preferably at an acute angle away from the end walls of the respective ends of the ring.
It will be noted that the enlarged end 7 of the ring is upset along its forward edge as at 12 to permit this end of the ring to more easily override the successive upwardly extending projections 9 formed in the end 8 of the ring as the two ends are brought to ether in telescopic relation. 1
t will be noted that portions of the ring material in the end 7 are cut away as at 13 to receive the upwardly extending projections 9 when the ends are telescoped together, thereby permitting the telescoped endsto lie one upon the other without disturbing the effective seal at these points.
In Figure 2 Ihave illustrated one of the important features of this invention which consists essentially in forming one portion of the periphery of the ring about the center 14 along the radius 15, while another portion'of the ring, which according to the present invention is preferably defined as including the enlarged end 7, is formed about the center 16 and the radius 17. In this manner the portion of the ring including the enlarged end 7 is toed inwardly so that if an imaginary line were continued fromthe extreme end of the portion 7 about the center 16 in a counter-clockwise direction, the resulting imaginary peri hery would lie within the actual periphery o the ring formed about the center 14. By forming the ring in this manner additional snap'l is imparted to, the telescoping ends7 of the ring when this end is applied over the end 8 in the manner here,- tofore described. The direction of snap-is downward with respect to Figure 2 and adequately insures a proper and efiicient intor-locking of the ends and, I have found,
containers without danger of leakage between i I the cover and the mouth of the container due to the high degree ofseal provided by the use of my invention.
It will be noted that by my invention I have provided a very simple and inexpensive clamping device for clamping the heads or covers on metallic receptacles which, when contracted about the cover and the bead of the receptacle, tightly draws the cover and bead together to form a liquid tight seal therebetween.
Various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 1. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extending flange for fitting over the bead, a split, contractible clamping ring engaging the bead and the cover flange and channelled to overlie and underlie the flange and beadrespectively to drawthe same tightly together when the ring is contracted, the respective ends ,of the ring telescoping one within the other when the ring is contracted, and cooperating means formed integrally with the ring ends for securing the ends of the ring together in telescopic interlocked relation when the ring:
is contracted, a portion of the ring including one of the ends thereof being formed about a center, offset "from the center about which the remainder of the ring is formed to impart a substantially radial locking pressure in-'.
wardly of the ring when the ends of the ring are telescoped. v
2. A clamping device for clamping covers ,on metallic receptacles, said device including a split, contractible rin the ends of which are arranged to interloc one" with the other when the ring is contracted about a receptacle and cover therefor, different portions of the ring being developed from offset centers to impart a substantially radial locking pressure inwardly of the ring when the ring 1s contracted.
3. A clamping deyice for clamping covers on metallic receptacles, said device includin a split, contractible rin the ends of whic are arranged to interloc one with the other when the ring is contracted about a receptacle and cover therefor, the respective interlocking portions of the ring being formed on radii operating on difierent centers to im art a substantially radial pressure inwar 1y of the ring when the ring is contracted.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afix my signature.
VERNON E. CORNELL.
