My invention is an improvement in metallic receptacles and closures therefor and relates more particularly to means for removably clamping covers on containers such as metallic barrels.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple means for clamping the heads on metallic barrels and other recep tacles for storing and shipping liquids such as oil in the form of a split, channelled, contracti le clamping ring for drawing the flan e of the cover ti htly downagainst the bea of the barrel to orm a li uid-tight seal between the cover and receptac e.
Another object of my invention is to provide a removable clamping device for clamping the heads on metallic receptacles such as barrels, which is self-lockingwhen contracted and which may be easily removed from the receptacle to permit access into the interior thereof.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be more readily understood from the following descriptionof an embodiment 2 thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters are em loyed to designate like parts throughout t e same. 1

In the drawing I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention applied to a metallic receptacle 1 such as a barrel. The receptacle is-usually provided at its open end with a bead rolled outwardly as at 2. of the receptacle as shown, the flange 4 being supported by the bead 2 of the receptacle. An annular packing 5 may be interposed between the flange 4andthe-bead2 to provide a cushion seat for the flange and to further insure a liquid seal when the cover is tightly clamped down on the bead.
In carrying out my invention as illustrated in the drawing I provide a channelled, split clamping ring 6, which, in cross section is substantially shaped. One end of the rin is slightly enlar ed for a portion of its lengt as indicated at for receivingthe other end of the ring 8,'in telescopic relation when the ring-is contracted about the end of therecep tacle for clamping the cover thereon. g I have provided means for securing the ends of the split ring together in interlocked relation when the ring is contracted. This means includes one or more projections or fingers 9 which are preferably formed integrally with the ring material and extend outwardly of the ring end 8 into the path of similar projections or fingers 10 formed on the ring end '11. The respective fingers are j preferably formed by stampingjthe same in the ring material and deflecting them. outwardly and inwardly respectively in substantially parallel fingers may be better understood by referring more particularly to Fi s. 4, 5, and- 6 of the drawing, itbeing note that where a plurality of such fingers is employed as shown an opening is provided in the ring materia between each adjacent finger for receiving the respective fingersof the otherend of the ring when the two ends are telescoped one within the other in ring contracted position. The fingers formed in each'end of the rin extend preferably at an acute angle away rom the end walls of the respective ends of the ring.
I have also provided means whereby the ring may be engaged by a suitable tool for contracting the ring in assembling and disassembling it from the receptacle. This means consists in up-setting a portion of the ring material as at 12 and forming an opening through the ring material for receiving a suitable tool for drawing the ring ends together. 100
By my invention I have provided a very simple and inexpensive clamping device for clamping the heads or covers on metallic receptacles which when contracted about the cover and the head of the rece tacle tightly draws the cover and bead toget er to form a liquid-tight seal therebetween. I have also provided means whereby the clamping ring may be easily removed if desired to ermit access to the interior of the receptac e. A clamping ring constructed in accordance with my invention will not become loosened accidentally even though it may be subjectedto severe shock as by dropping the barrel or from other causes.
My invention is intended primaril for use with metallic containers of relatively heavy gage material as, for instance, sheet steel from 10 to 18 standard gage. Liquids such'as oil are stored or shipped in these containers and a liquid tight seal between the bead and the mouth of the container is very essential in such case. By the use of my invention, such a seal ma be maintained while the ring is contracted Various changes may be made in the details of construction andarrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extending concavoconvex flange for supporting the cover on the bead, of an annular contractible clamping ring engaging the bead and the cover flange and channelled to overlie and underlie the flange and bead to draw the same tightl together when the ring is contracted, an interlocking means formed integrally with the ring and located at oints on the ring for clamping the ring tightly about the cover and the bead when the ring is contracted.
2. The combination with a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a coverfor the rece tacle having a marginal outwardly exten ing flange for fitting the cover on the bead, of a split, contractible clamping ring engaging the bead and the cover flange and channelled to overlie and underlie the flange and bead to draw the same tightly together when the ring is contracted, the respective ends of the ring telescoping one within the other when the ring is contracted, and coo erating means formed integrally with the ring ends' for securing the ends of the ring together in interlocked telescopic relation when the ring is contracted.

4. The combination with a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle .having a marginal outwardl extending flan e for fitting the cover on t e bead, of a split, channelled, contractible clamping ring engfiging the bead and the cover flange to draw t e same tightly together when the ring is contracted, the respective ends of the ring telescoping one within the other when the ring is contracted, and coo erating means the ring is contracted about the bead and the cover.
5. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extending concave-convex flange for supporting the cover on the bead, an annular contractible clamping ring engagin the bead and the cover flange said ring Twin channelled to overlie and underlie "the fin e and bead to draw the same tightly toget er when the means formed integrally with the ring an located at spaced points along the ring ends for clamping the ring tightly about the cover and the head when the ring is contracted.
6. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extending flange for fitting the cover on the head, a split, contractible clamping ring engagin the bead and the cover flange and channelle to overlie and underlie the flange and bead to draw the same tightly together when the ring is contracted, the respective ends of the ring telescoping one within the other when the ring is contracted, and a series of spaced cooperating means formed integrally with the ring ends for securing the ends of the ring together in interlocked telescopic relation and distributing the closing forces uniformly between the engaged cooperating means when the ring is contracted.
7. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extendin flange for fittin the cover on the head, a split, contractib e clamping ring engaging the bead and the cover flange and channelled to overlie and underlie the flange and bead to draw the same tightly togetherwhen the ring is contracted, the respective ends of the ring telescoping one within the other when the ring is contracted and cooperating means formed integrally with the ring ends for securing the ends of the ring together in interlocked telescopic relation when the ring is contracted, said means including a plura ity of projections ressed from the ring material and extending in substantially parallel planes, each of the projections on one end of the ring intersecting the plane of the wall of the other end of the ring.
8. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having an annular bead rolled about its open end and a cover for the receptacle having a marginal outwardly extending flange for fitting the cover on the head, a.
split, contractib e clamping ring engaging certain of the projections on one end of the ring intersecting the plane of the wall of the other end of the ring.
10. A device for clamping a cover on a receptacle, comprising a ring channelled to overlie and underlie adjacent portions of the cover and receptacle split transversely whereby the ends of the ring are telescoped one within the other when the ring is contracted, each of said rin ends being formed for telescopin interloc ed engagement one with the g other y having portions pressed from the ring material at spaced intervals to form a plurality of interlocking teeth separated by openings in the ring material to receive the teeth 0 the other ring end and thereby uniformly distributing the closing forces be tween the engaged interlocking teeth.
