G. E. MITTINGER FASTENING AND CLAMPING RING Filed March 25 1925 Patented 19, 1926.
GEORGE EUGENE HITTING-E}, OF CLEVMD HEIG HTS, OHIO.
rnsrnnme AND cnnurme nmo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Mrr'rmenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening and Clamping Rings,
of which the following is a specification,
in its use entirely by hand.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- videa novel form and construction of clamping and fastening ring which can be manufactured at a considerable saving over those fastening rings now in use.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of ring which can be operated entirely by hand for fasten ing and clamping the lids 0r covers of receptacles.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a ring of the character described which is additionally provided with a looking means.
Another and further object of the inven tion is to provide a ring of the character described which is simple of construction and operation, cheap of manufacture and highly efl'icient in use.
Other further objects, novel features of construction and, improved results of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawings In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the application of the ring to a receptacle. I Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of Fig. 1, the section being taken centrally through the overlapping ends of the ring and the locking device.
.Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view Application filed March 25, 1925. Serial No. 18,171. 7
showing the ring applied to a receptacle and ready to be locked in place.
To those skilled in the art it is well known that in the-manufacture of receptacles it is important that there be provided a cover attaching or fastening construction which is s1mple and quick in operation and at the same time one which is satisfactory and eificle'nt when in use. The above features must be of a character which will not make the manufacturing cost prohibitive. There are certain rules laid down by the railroads in respect to containers carried by them and all containers must meet with and comply to these railroad standards. In the drawings I have shown'tmy improved fastening and clamping ring as applied to a paint pail but it will be readily understood that the principles of my invention can be applied to other receptacles without departing from' the spirit of the inventlon. p
The paint pail body is designated in the drawings as A, thepaint pail cover or lid as B, the clamping and fastening ring as C and the locking member as D.
The paint pail or container A at its upper end is provided with an inward bend or crimp 5 which curves upwardly and outwardly as at 6 and terminates in an approximately flat or horizontal edge or flange 7.
The container cover or lid B comprises a bottom 8 surrounded by upwardly and slightly outwardly extending walls 9 terminating in the horizontal circumferential edge or flange 10. y
.In applying the lid to the container the lid bottom 8 and side walls 9 extend downwardly into the container while the container flange 7 and lid flange 1O are adapted to seat one upon the other. Inasmuch as the container being described is for transportation of a liquid arubber asket'll is-jinterposed between the flanges be readily understood however that in the event the container is to be used for the transportation of dry materialthe'rubber gasket 11 can be eliminated.
The lockingmember D is formed as an integral part of the flange 10 of the cover I and extends in a horizontal plane outwardly from the cover flange as clearly appears in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. This locking and 10. Itwill 5 sure that there will member in reality is a lug having a curved -or are shaped. outer edge 12, and an approximately straight edge 13 which adjacent its connection with'the id flan e 10 is providedwith an inwardly struc notch 14:. The operation of the locking member-W111 be hereinafter described.
The ring 0 is V-shaped in cross section, as clearly ppears in Figure 2 of the drawings, the apex of the V being rounded rather than meeting an acute angle while one side 15 of the V 1s slightly wider or longer than the opposit" side or wall 16 of the V. In application the V lies upon its side and hereinafter the wall 15 will be referred to as the upper wall and the wall 16 as the lower wall. The ring is of a length slightly greater than the circumference of the receptacle to which it is to be applied and hence the ring ends 17 and 18 overlap when applied to the receptacle, as clearly appears 1n Figures 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings.
Both of t e ring ends 17 and 18 are provided with slots or openings 19 adjacent their ends. These slots or openings are formed by cutting out a portion of the rounded apex of the ring. A short wall or ends 20 is left between the ends of the ring and the notches 19. As clearly appears in the drawing the notches 19 are of sufiicient len h to receive the locking lug D.
he 0 ration or application of the ring is as fol ows: After t e lid or cover B has been placed on the receptacle A in the manner shown in Fi ure 2 of the drawings, one end of the rin is positioned as shown in Fig. 3 of the rawings with the locking lug D extending outwardly through the rin notch 19. Throughout the remainin lengt of the ring it is positioned to have tween its upper and lower walls 15 and 16 the flanges 7 and 10 of the receptacle and lid respectively. It will then be ound that the unattached end of the ring will assume the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawin with the locking lug D extending partial y through the ring notch 19.
It will now be-seen due to the curved or are form of the locking lug edge 12 that by pushing the ring downwardly or inwardly will cause the ring to tightly clamp the overlapping flanges of the receptacles and cover together. I
When the ring is in place it will assume the position shown in F1gure 4 of the drawings. The ring ends are overlapped with the end wall 20 of one ring end in the docking lug notch 14 while a portion 21 of the apex of the opposite ring ends enters the notch and overlaps the end wall 20 heretofore mentioned.
The ring is now fastened and place, securely container body clamped in clamping and fastening the and cover together. To asbe no displacement of the ring the locking lug D is now bent downwardly and inwardly. as appears in Figure 2 of the drawings with the resultthat the clamping and fastening ring is securely locked into position.
To guard against unlawful tampering with the pail contents andfto comply with this ruling of the railroads\ it is intended that the locking lug D be provided with an opening 22 adapted to receive the common form of lead seal 23 after the ring has been positioned upon the container and its cover.
To comply with the further ruling of the railroads the construction of both the container and the locking lug is such that the extreme outer edges of the lid fastenin construction, which is the locking lug as clear] appears in Figure 2 of the drawings, lies within the vertical plane of the container side walls 24.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a fastening, clamping and locking ring which can be applied entirely by hand and can be as readily removed in the same manner. This is readily apparent when it is pointed out that the locking lug D is of a thickness of metal which will permit its being bent by the thumb or fingers of the hand. By reason of the construction heretofore described I have eliminated the necessity of the use of a screw-driver or other tool to effect the locking or unlocking of the container cover.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, comprising a ring provided with o enin s, a locking and clamping lug carried by t e cover and having a curved outer edge, and said lug adapted to enter and en ings, whereby the application of the ring oi'er the lug clamps and fastens the ring in p ace. I
2. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, com rising a ring provided with openings, a 00king and clamping lug having a curved outer edge and provided with a notch, and said lug adapted to enter said rin openin s, whereby the rin portions a jacent t e ppenings enter an engage the notch of the 3. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, comprising a ring provided with openings and being ofa length greater than the periphery of the container to which it is to be applied, a' lockin and clamping lug having a curved outer edge and provided with a notched portion, and said lug adapted for engagement with the ring openings, whereby the curved portion of the lug tightens the ring in place and the lug notched portion engage said ring opengages portions of the ring adjacent the openings and fastens the ring in place.
4. A device for clamping and fastening the overlapping edges of a container and its cover, comprising an approximately'V- shaped ring provided with openings substantially at,the apex of the V, a locking and clampin lug carried by the cover, the ring adapted to receive the overlapping edges of the container and its cover, and the lug adapted to enter and on age the ring openings for clamping and astening the ring in place.
5. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, comprising a ring provided with openings adjacent its ends, a locking and clamping lug carried by the container cover, said lug adapted to enter and engage said ring openings, and said lug adapted to be bent for locking the ring against removal.
6. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, comprising a ring provided with openings, a. locking and clam ing lug carried by the container cover an provided with a curved outer edge and a notched portion adjacent its base, said lug adapted to enter and engage the ring openings thereby tightening the ring around the receptacle and its cover, portionsof the'ring adapted to enter the notched portion of the lug for retaining the ring in place, and the lug adapted tobc bent for'lockin the ring against removal.
7. A device or clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place, comprising a ring provided with o enings, a locking and clamping lug carrie by the container cover and adapted to enter and engage said ring openings for tightening and fastening the ring around the receptacle and its cover, and the locking lug positioned in a vertical plane wholly within the vertical plane of the receptacle walls. 8. A device for clamping and fastening the cover of a container in place comprising a ring provided with openings, a locking and clamping member cariied by the container cover and adapted for engagement with said ring openings, whereby the ring is clamped and fastened securelyaround the container and its cover.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ai lix my signature.
GEORGE EUGENE MIT'IINGER.
