This invention relates in a general sense to miter boxes used by carpenters, cabinet makers and other wood workers such as pattern makers or the like for making saw cuts in boards at desired angles transversely or vertically, and more particularly this invention is of the type of such apparatus in which the saw carrying and guiding members or parts thereof may be adjusted angularly 1o horizontally as well as vertically.
An object of this invention is to provlde an improved miter box of the character stated having parts of special construction and arrangement whereby it is believed a superior contrivance is produced of very durable nature, simple in its combinations and very convenient and reliable in operation.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention, and Fig. 1 represents what may be termed a front view of one of the guides and the scale thereto relating. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same parts. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the broken line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front face of the guide scale detached. Fig. 5 1s a side View partly in vertical section showing the attachment of one of the guides and the scale relating thereto. Fig. 6 is a s1de view partly in vertical section showing all parts assembled and the frame in section. Fig. 7 is a top view of the forward portions of this invention showing the front 3 horizontal scale. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary front view of the front horizontal scale showing the graduated teeth sometimes used.
Throughout the description and drawings the same number is employed to refer to the same part.
Considering the drawings, the saw guides 1 and 2 are of the usual construction provided with a sliding portion having a saw slot. The sliding portion may be secured movably by the face plates 3 and 4 or the like. This invention is not intended to be limited to the precise forms illustrated. An adjustable stop 5 may be introduced to control the downward movements of the sliding portions of the guides. The stop, on guide 2 is marked 6. The guides are secured at the ends of a horizontal beam 7, and this attachment may be made by means of a recess 8 in the lower end of the. guide engaging a block 9 on the end of the beam and fastened by the screw plug 10. Obviously this'junction may be variously modified.
As best illustrated in Fig. ,5 each guide has a trunnion'll that pivotally occupies a cylindrical seat shown in the top of the scale 12 as seen in Fig. 4. A washer 13 held by screws 14 upon the end of the trunnion permits the guide to be turned with respect to the scale marks 15, and a curving slot 16 allows a set screw 17 to pass to adjustably clamp the guide to the scale. A clamping block 18 rides the beam 7 and acts upon the lower portion of the part circular body of the scale 12.
In Fig. 5 it will be seen that a horizontal bar 19 is attached to the scale 1.2 by the screw 20, and in Fig. 6 it is shown that the bar 19 is pivotally connected with the frame 22 by the bolt 21. The frame may have the customary recessed back piece 23. Further considering Fig. 6 together with Fig. 7 the front scale 24 will be noted, and there is provided a finger operated catch 25 having a set screw 26 by which the catch may be locked in engagement with the graduated teeth 27 best shown in Fig. 8.
In the operation of this invention, the bar and scales 12 swing upon the pivot bolt 21, and the bar may be firmly held at any angle indicated upon the front scale 24 by setting up the bolt 21. It is desirable, however, to provide more convenient means for holding the bar 19 in an adjusted position, and for this purpose the finger latch 25 and the graduated tooth scale 27 is provided. The guides 1 and 2 turn upon the two trunnions 11, and both may be inclined in vertical planes and secured at selected angles indicated upon the scales 12. With both the guides thus attached to the scales 12 the adjusted position is very strongly held, and the desired saw cuts may be made rapidly without disturbing the adiustment.
Having now described this invention and the manner of its use I claim A miter box having in combination, a supporting frame, upper and lower parallel horizontal bars of rectangular cross section, the upper bar being pivotally attached to said frame, the said bar being adapted to swing in a horizontal plane, saw guides erected perpendicularly at the ends of the lower bar, said lower bar being constructed to swing in a horizontal plane with said upper bar, the said upper bar. having a curved scale member arranged against a saw guide, the said scale having a trunnion seat at the top, the saw guide having a trunnion occupying the said seat whereon the saw guide may be inclined in either direction, the said scale having'a curved slot, a'screw passing through the saw guide and through said slot, and a sliding clamping block having a flat side against the scale and engaging said screw for clamping the saw guide to said scale, and the said block having a flat side resting upon said lower bar Whereby the displacement of the lower bar'sidewise with respect to the scale is prevented.
