Further objects and advantages will be understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the preferred form of our invention herein described.

For purposes of disclosure, we have illus-v trated in the drawings and will hereinafter describe in detail the preferred embodiment of our invention, with the understanding that wev do notintend to limit our invention to the particular construction and arrangenient shown, it being contemplated that varions changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, our invention' in the exemplary form coinpi'ises a cast metal base 1, having raisedend portions 2 forming a divided horizontal work table adapted to support the' work, such as a board or studding to be cut. A U-shaped saw frame 17 is pivotally mounted in ,the bearing kblock 9, the uprights 18 and cross bar 19jof this fra-ine being bifurcated at 2() to admit a back sew (-notsliown) and thereby guide it. The cross bar19 has a cylindrical surface 21 to coact withtlie bearing trough 11 of the bearing block 9. At each end of the cross bar 19 and beyond the edges of the work table 2 llU the cross bar is of circular section for a substantial distance as at 22 and 23. Adjacent these cylindrical portions, the sides of the bearing block 9 extend upward above the plane of the work table as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 to form bearings 24 and 25 for the cross bar and thereby eectively retain the saw frame 17 in the bearing block. The
portion of the cross bar between the bearings thus formed is reduced in section as shown at 26 in Fig. 5, in order that it shall not project above the plane oi: the work table 2 when the saw frame is tilted. Thus, the saw frame 17 is pivoted for adjustment about a horizontal axis inA the plane ot the work table 2.
To secure the frame 17 in `any of its pivoted positions and to indicate the angle at which it is inclined, we provide a plate 27 secured to the bearing block 9 in a vertical position by any suitable means. This plate has an arcuate slot 28 therethrough and a scale 29 along the lower edge of the slot. A suitable index may be provided fixed to the saw frame to indicate on this Vscale the angle of inclination of the trame, such an index Vbeing lier-ein shown as comprising a depending arm 30 having a pointer 31, said arm being secured to the saw irame by means of screws 30a. This arm 30, in addition to its use as an index, comprises means to secure the saw frame in its adjusted position and against longitudinal .movement For this added purpose the arm has a hole 32 therethrough coinciding with the arcuate slot 28 to admit a suitable thumb screw 33 adapted to engage a nut 34 and thereby clamp the saw frame. rigidly.
From the foregoing vit will be apparent that we have provided an improved miter box in which the saw frame is readily adjustable about a horizontal as well asa vertical axis, and in which, irrespective of the angular adjustment and inclination of the frame, the saw will be guided to cut the intersection of the work table and back at the center line vof the table, thereby permitting accurate measurement of the material being cut.
We claim as our invention:
1. A miter box having, in combination, a base comprising raised end portions and an intermediate sector portion, said end portions forming a divided work table, a divided back, a member pivotally mounted on said sector portion for adjustment about a vertical axis in the plane of said back, means to secure said member in its adjusted position, said member having bearings aty each end thereof and a bearing trough semicircular in section throughout its length. a U-shaped saw frame pivoted in said member and adjustable about a horizontal axis in the plane of said work table, said saw frame comprising a cylindrically surfaced cross bar coacting with said bearings and trough, and a paiir of biturcatedt arms extending perpendicular thereto adapted to guide asaw across said table, said cross bar having its central Vport-ion.between said bearings reducedin section so as not to extend above the plane ot' the said table, said member having a plate member depending 'from one end thereof,A

8. A niiter box having, in combination, a base comprising a divided work table and an intermediate sector portion in a lower plane than said table, a divided back, a member pivotally mounted on said sector portion for adjustment about a vertical axis in the plane or said back, means to secure said member in its adjusted position, said member having bearings at each end thereof and a bearing l trough therebetween, a U-sliaped saw frame pivoted in said bearings and trough for adjustmentl about a horizontal axis in the plane o't said work table, said saw frame comprising a cross bar adapted to coact'withsaid bearings and trough and a pair oit perpendicular arms biturcated to form guides for a saw, and means to secure said saw 'trame in its adjusted position.
