The principal objects of this invention are to provide a metallic frame for a miter box which can be formed of sheet metal in a rapid and inexpensive manner and to provide an improved means for supporting the saw'guide and adjusting it to any desired height or to any desired angle. p

The frame of the miter box in the form illustrated comprises a fiat plate or platform 10 having its two ends bent down at right angles to form four legs 11, these legs having supporting feetl 12 formed by bending them inwardly preferably and therefore integral with the platform. `Art the rear the sheet metal of which the platform 10 is formed is bent up to form a back plate 13 ati-ight angles and this is pro-l vided with a slot lltl'irough which the saw passes in the operation of the device. the front the platformvis provided with an integral flange 15 extending downwardly all the way across the front andl cutv oli at right angles at the 1ends to engage the ends 1l and strengthen the structure in that way. These notches. are naturally rso Varranged as to provide for sawingv at various angles `as for example 45 degrees and 30 degrees or vanything `else, that happens to be common inthe industryin which the instrument is used. The arm is 'thinned across it at 27 `to permit it to yield. It is located so as to yieldingly holdthe prong 26 in. any notch 17 and so it will snap into them. j `The arm 20 projects beyond the point of pivotal support and is provided at a point materially beyond ,the stud `with a perforation through which extends thejthreaded end of an upright standard 28 with-a nut 29 on the bottom to hold it securely in position. rthis standard is transversely perforated at the top by a round hole to receive an arm BO of cylindrical form preferably.` The. top of the standard 2S is slit at 28a and provided with a binding screw 31 sothatthis arm can be moved out orv in or turned on its own axis and then secured in the desired position. This arm is intended to extend forward over the platform of the miter box. v
On vthe outer end the arm V30` is provided with a longitudinal diametrical slot for receiving aplate 33. j rlhis plateis shown in the present case-arranged vertical and as having upper and lower flanges 34 parallel with each other. These flanges are provided with T-shaped slots for receiving one l UU of a pair of arms S35 which are integrally connected together at the top by being bent trom tno same piece ot bar Stoch. lt con stitutes a horse shoe shaped member having two holding afms Yfor pair et saw-guides 3G which are secured to their lower ends. It will be obvious that this entire saw-guide can slide up and down in the slots in the flanges 34.-. The arm 8O is provided with a thumb-screw 37 for engaging the plate and securing it in adjusted positions. Qn the metallic platform ot the miter box is 'fastened a board l0 Ylor receiving the teeth of the saw so as to avoid the dulling or" the saw on the metal platform.
Tn the use oit this device the arm can be moved out or in by loosening the screw 31, the arm can be moved up and down by loosening the screw 37 and the whole guide can be moved around at any angle desired within reasonable limits by pressing down on the -outer end of the arm 20 and swinging it around. ThenV it can be secured by means of the screw 25. rIhese are the ordinary adjustments in miter boxes and theyare all provided for in this case by very simple means and by inexpensive construction. There is one other adjustment that can be provided. That is to loosen the screw 31 and turn the guide 35 with the arm 30 to any desired angle as indicated in dotted lines in F ig. 3.
It will be noted that in all positions in which the saw guides are vertical the saw will pass through the slot 14 irrespective of the adjustment of the guides around the arc of the circle. This is due to the fact that the arm 20, which carries both the standard 28 and all the parts supported by it is pivoted at the center of the slot 111.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 to 10, many of the parts are the same as those above described and have been given the same reterence numerals, but in place of the two parts 2S and 80, I have shown a rod 41 which is bent at right angles and has a central axial cavity Ll-Q in its horizontal end surrounded by a conical surface a3 having a scale on it. On the rear ot the horizontal. arm al near this scale is a slot la extending clear through to the recess and extending about one third of the way around the circle.
Covering or partially covering this slot is a plate 15 having an arcuate shape and a roughened or toothed interior concave surface. This curved plate has a central opening 46 through which extends a thumb screw t7 screwing into the end of a rod 48 which is in axial alignment with the end ot' the arm 41 and constitutes the equivalent of the n rod 80. This rod has a reduced end which extends into the recess l2 and at the shoulder is provided with a zero point, as shown, registering with the scale on the conical end L3 so as to show whether the supporting' arm L18 is turned at an angle or not. This arm supports the plate 33 and will hold the saw guides 3G in exactly a vertical position when the two Zero points are together, as shown in Fig. 'i'. Gbviously the thumb screw l? may be loosened and the rod 47S turned on its own axis in either direction and then the screw tightened up again to hold it there and Vthen the scale will show the angle.
In either term this constitutes an e::::- tremefy durable miter box which can be used for all ordinary operations that may be required and will not get broken up in the way in which ordinary miter boxes grcquently are. These parts are substantially connected so that in operation it will rotan its accuracy and there is not/enough flexibility ot any of the parts to permit the guides 36 getting out of t-rue` Although T have illustrated and described only one form of the invention am aware of the fact that modiications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details mentioned, but what l do claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, a miter box comprising a sheet metal platform bent up at the back to form a back plate and bent down at the front to formv a curved flange having notches on the bottom, an arm pivoted under the 'rear ot the platform at the center of said back plate extending to the front and having an integral prong at the top for engaging in said notches, said front flange being curved on the pivot as a center, and means carried by said arm and movable therewith for guiding a saw.
2. In a miter box, the combination with a frame and back plate, the latter having a vertical slot, o1 an arm pivoted to swing about the center of said slot and having a spur at the front thereof, the front of the .miter box having an arcuate flange extending downwardly therefrom provided with notches in the bottom to receive said spur so-that the notches can control the position of the arm about its center, means carried by the arm for clamping it to the vflange in adjusted positions, said arm having a portion between its pivotand its forward end thinned down to give it resiliency to allow the spur to engage the notches, and a saw guide carried by the other end of the arm.
3. In a miter box, the combination with a sheet metal trame and back plate, the latter having a. vertical slot, ot a vertical shaft or stud at the center ott-he bottom o'f said slot, an arm pivoted to swing on said stud under the frame and having` at the front thereof two lingers extending upwardly and a projection extending upwardly at a greater distance from the point of pivotal support, a screw on said projection for olan'iping the arno in adjusted positions, the front of the initer box having an arcuate flange extending downwardly therefrom between the ingers and projection and provided with notches in the bottoni and said arin having a spur registering with said notches so that the notches can control the position of the arin about its Center, said arni l'iaving a portion between its pivot and for Ward end thinned down to give it resiliency to allow the spur to spring into and out of the notches, and a saw guide supported by the other end of the arln.
el. ln a initer box, the combination with a iframe and an arin pivoted at the rear thereof, of a standard extending up from the arin and xed thereto, said standard having a circular passage through it arranged horizontally and having a slit end, a round bar adjustable in said passage and extending forwardly over the arin, a guide on said bar, a pair ot' saw guides, means for supporting the saw guides from said guide, and means for clamping said supporting means in adjusted positions, whereby the saw guides may be turned about a horizontal axis above it to any angular position.
