Description

F. WENDT.
'SAFETY-POCKET.
Patented Mayl, 1877.
ATTUBIEYS.
MPETEHS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D O.
r4 n A 44A UNITED STATES PATENT CEETCE.
FREDERICK WENDT, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,799` dated May 15,1877; application tiled March 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK WENDT, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful SafetyPocket, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure. l represents a front View, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections, of my improved safety-pocket on line c c, Fig. 1, showing the same, respectively, in closed and open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for manufacturers of clothing', tailors and others, an improved safety-pocket, of simple and reliable construction, which may be used for coats, vests, pants, and other garments; and the invention consists of a' pocket having a small interior pocket of the inner top part, in connection with a top iap, fitting into the small pocket, so as to close or open the main pocket.
In the drawing, A represents a pocket of any -suitable size or shape, as employed in garments, to the 'upper or top part of which a flap, B, is attached, that tits into a smaller supplementary pocket, G, at the inside and upper part of the open lining of the pocket A. The ap B may be made with square or rounded-off corners, or ol' ornamental shape, if desired, the flap being introduced into the supplementary or safety pocket G, and retained therein, so as to form with the same a simple device for closing the main pocket in perfectlysafe and reliable manner, as shown in Fig. 2.
When it is desired to pass the handminto the pocket the nap is removed from the supplementary pocket and pushed to the inside of the main pocket, as shown in Fig. 3, which is accomplished in easy manner, admitting thus any article to be put in or taken out of the pocket. By replacing the fiap into the small pocket the main pocket is closed, and thereby any accidental loss of pocket-books, papers, or other articles prevented, and also the surreptitious taking out of any article from the pockets rendered more difticult, being more liable to detection.
The safety-flap may, with little practice, be quickly opened or closed, so as to form no annoyance in the use of such pockets.
For larger pockets, such as are used in overcoats, in which heavier articles are carried, it may be advisable to use. in connection with the safety-pocket, a button thatis sewed to the inside of the pocket and buttoned to a button-hole of the inner part of the safetypocket, so as to prevent the sagging of the pocket and the escape of the flap from the safety-pocket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lette rs Patent- A safety-pocket for garments, composed of a main pocket with a top flap, in connection with a supplementary pocket at the upper part of the open portion or lining of the peck et, substantially constructed and arranged to operate as described and shown.
FREDERICK WENDT.
