This invention 'appertains to new and useful improvements in 'sadirons, and more par ticularly to a novel sadiron of the electrical yp The principal object of this invention is to provide a sadiron which is water-insulated to'prevent burning of work.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the followingspecification.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a sectional view through the iron.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the iron showing the jacket and cover plate for the element removed.
Fig.3 represents a top plan view, partly in section showing the shoe plate.
Fig. 4 represents a transverse sectional 2 view through the shoe plate.
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 3.
. Fig. 6 represents afragmentary detailed sectional view through the heating element assembl Fig. 7 represents a rearend elevational view of the iron.
Fig. 8 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 8-8 .of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the shoe-plate which is of the usual iron conformation and this is provided with a shoulder 6 around its perimeter upon which is supported the jacket 7 which forms a hood for the heatmg element assembly generally referred to by numeral 8.
Numeral 9 represents a raised wall upon the plate 5 having the same configuration as the perimeter of the plate 5 and this is connected at several points by the bridge rovided with one or more openings 11 which establishes communication between the compartments 12, 13, .14 and 15, water being supplied to these compartments by the tube. 16 at the butt end of the shoe plate 5, which merges at its outer end in a funnel-like structural? having a needle valve closure ,18 thereon.
This heating element assembly 8 is interposed between the bridges 10' and the cover plate 19, the cover plate 19 being provided with depending flanges 20 which engage in overlapping relation, the wall 9.
},The jacket 7 is secured to the plate 5 by tie bolts 21 which extend downwardly from 1 the brackets 22 22, through the jacket 7 and cover plate 9, as well as through the assembly 8 to thread into the plate 5. A jamb nut 23 is provided on each of these tie bolts 21 for engagement against the top side of the cover plate 19 and the spacers .24 are provided on the tie bolts 2l'between the assembly 8 and the plate 5, as in the manner substantially shown in Fig. 1;
The rear wall of the jacket 7 is provided 30 with an opening from the upper portion of which extends an inclined flange 30 against which the electric plug 31 serves and is tensionally urged by the leaf spring 32. The
.plug 31 is provided with internal contacts withwhich the prongs 33 on the plate 19 are engageable, and the plug 31 is provided with notches 34 therein which receive the offset 35 of the spring 32 whereby the plug 31 is retained against accidental displacement.
Interposed between the upper end of the brackets 2222'is the handle 36. The heating element assembly 8' includes a pair of zig-zaggedly arranged elements 37 (see Fig. 2) of one continuous wire, which is connected at its ends to the prongs 33. Located upon and below the element 37 are mica sheets 38.
While the foregoing s ecification sets forth the invention in speci c terms, it is to be understood that Specific changes in the sha e, size and materials may beresorted to wit out departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what .I claim as new is A sadiron of the character described comprising a shoe plate, a jacket for disposition upon the plate, a basin in the plate for receiving water, an inlet to the basin, a closure for the basin, means for securing the jacket to the plate, the rear end of the said jacket provided with an opening, a plug, a pressure plate extending outwardly from the jacket adjacent the opening and against which the plug can bear, contact prongs on the closure for engagement by the plug, and spring means on the jacket for engagement against the plug to clamp the same against the said pressure plate.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
PHILLIP N. MURAKAMI.
