1 Claim.
1 The invention relates to flat irons, for laundering purposes, and more especially to electric irons.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, wherein the,
body is equipped with a one-piece Pyrex boiler for steaming purposes in the use of such iron, the boiler being made from glass enables the user of the iron to observe the water level and the action of the action of the water during heating thereof, and. eliminates corroding, which might result in leakage of steam and water.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, wherein the sole plate and chassis thereof are made from metal, while the handle is constructed from heat resisting material, the steaming action being had at the toe end of the sole plate, and the assembly of such iron as novel and unique.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, wherein the parts thereof are readily replaceable, thereby minimizing repair costs, and increasing the life of such iron.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in operation, strong, durable, readily and easily operated, neat in appearance, compact in the assembly of its parts, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the iron constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a front view of the iron. Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the lin 4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is an inner face view of the sole plate of the iron.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the front section of the chassis of the iron.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the iron in its entirety constructed in accordance with the invention, and comprises an outer flat faced sole plate [0, having counterseated in its inner-face an electric heating element 1 I, which is disposed medially of such plate, while formed in the toe end of this plate ID are steam emitting passages 12, these being arranged spaced from each other in circular order.
Superimposed upon the plate I 0 is a chassis involving front and rear standards or sections l3 and I4, respectively, between which is located a handle l5, the latter being disposed at the upper ends of such standards or sections and detachably fastened thereto by transverse bolts IS intersecting the interfitted joints l1 therebetween, which are a tongue and groove formation, in each instance.
Allocated between the standards or sections I3 and I4, and counterseated therein and in the inner face of the soleplate Ill is a Pyrex glass water boiler or reservoir I8, which is removable, its water content l9 being for steaming purposes. This boiler or reservoir at its forward end is provided with nipple 20 which is socketed in the inner end of a filling passage 2| formed vertically in the upper portion of the standard or section l3 and opens through the uppermost end of the latter, where a removable plug or cap 22 closes the same. The nipple 20 is fitted with a packing 23 for watertight purposes.
The standard or section [3 is further provided with a downwardly flared steam delivery passage 24 which communicates with the passages 12 for the discharge of steam from the boiler or reservoir l8 when generated therein on the heating of the latter by the heating element II, the upper end of the passage 24 opens into the passage 2| at a point above the nipple connection therewith and at a forward incline, so that on filling the reservoir l8 water will not waste therethrough.
The plate I0 is detachably fastened in place by securing means 25, and the electric connector prongs 26, respectively, these being located fore and aft of the iron and connect this plate and standards l3 and I4 together.
The iron A in the construction before set forth is handled in the usual well known manner as other standard electric irons of present day makes.
What is claimed is:
An iron of the kind described comprising a sole vplate, an electric heating element countersunk in the upper fact of the sole plate, a glass boiler countersunk in the sole plate above the heater in contact therewith, a chassis having a fore and an aft section removably secured to the sole plate having the ends of the boiler countersunk therein whereby the boiler is held in position in said plate, a handle connecting the upper end of the fore and aft sections, steam emitting passages in 5 the sole plate forward of said boiler at the toe portion thereof, a passage leading through one of the sections and communicating with the steam emitting passage in the lower face of the sole plate at an angle thereto, a vertical passage communicating With said last passage and said boiler and a nipple carried by the boiler and forming a tight joint with the vertical passage.
