The invention has relation to baskets, and particularly to clothes baskets having upper and lower hoops, and opposite longitudinally straight downwardly tapered side walls having rounded corner portions and including oblique splints connecting said upper and lower hoops. The side wall splints are arranged to cross one another obliquely and as this sets up a twisting strain of the splints upon the lower hoop or bottom connections, it is an object of the invention to adapt these lower connections to effectually resist such twisting strain. It is another object of the invention to effectually brace the basket against sidesway. A further object is to construct the basket with the side wall splints continuously interwoven around the same.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts set forth in the appended claims.

In the drawing, which shows a clothes basket provided with longitudinally straight downwardly tapered side walls having rounded corner portions comprising oblique splints connecting upper and lower hoops, the numeral 3 designates the upper hoop, 5 the lower hoop, and 1 the oblique side wall splints which in the present instance cross one another obliquely and have the upper and lower ends thereof received and secured between outer and inner members 3 of the upper hoop and 5 and 6 of the lower hoop.
The side wall splints 1 have the oblique crossing relation thereof varied around the rounded corners of the basket, this being necessary in order that the angular relation of these splints upon opposite sides of the basket shall be similar and to enable the splints to be continuously interwoven with 50 one another entirely around the basket. Ventilating spaces 2 are provided between the splints.
In order to adapt the connections of the side wall splints 1 with the lower hoop members 5 and 6 to efli'ectually resist the twisting strain thereon set up by the oblique crossing of the splints with one another, and at the same time to brace the basket effectually against sidesway in all directions, the lower end portions of said splints are lapped to provide a substantially solid wall of these lapped portions located opposite to and extending above and secured to said lower hoop members entirely around the basket.
The bottom of the basket has woven splints 8 provided with downturned ends 9 also located and secured between the outer and inner members 5 and 6 of the lower hoop, a longitudinal center brace 7 being employed. Ventilating openings 10 are provided between the bottom splints.
Figure 4 shows a modification, wherein the bottom is made up of a rectangular wooden frame comprising bars 11, to take the place of the inner member 5 of the lower hoop, a thin cover splint strip 12 for the lower ends of the side splints taking the place of the outer member 6 of the lower hoop.
I claim 8O 1. In a basket, having an upper hoop, a bottom, and opposite longitudinally straight side walls including oblique splints connecting said upper hoop and said bottom and continuously interwoven entirely around the basket; said splints having oblique crossing relation to one another and having a substantially solid wall of lapped portions thereof located opposite to and extending above and secured to said bottom entirely around the basket and adapted to effectually resist the twisting strain of said splints and brace the basket against sidesway in all directions.
2. In a basket having an upper hoop, a bottom, and opposite longitudinally straight downwardly tapering side walls having rounded corner portions and including oblique splints connecting said upper hoop and said bottom; said splints having oblique crossing relation to one another, being continuously interwoven with one another entirely around the basket, having the oblique crossing relation thereof varied around the rounded corner portions, and having a sub- 5 stantially solid wall of lapped portions thereof located opposite to and extending above and secured to said bottom entirely around the basket, and adapted to effectually resist the twisting strain of said splints and to brace the basket against sidesway in all directions.
