-My invention relates to lifting jacks and an object of the same/is to provide a lifting jack which may beengaged with any projecting' part ofan automobile such as the 5 chassis side bar and thereby obviates the necessity of kneeling beneath the automobile to place the jack beneath the spring or axle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jack standard extension which may be removably mounted on the lifting standard of any conventional jack.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a vertically adjustable jack stand,- ard extension having a lifting element for 5 engagement with one of the shackle bolts and which may be mounted on the extension at any selected height so that the device can be utilized on any automobile regardless of the height of the chassis frame with relation to the ground.
lVith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangements of parts and 5 operations to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention' Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 of 2;
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device in operative position;
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the lifting element embodied in the invention;
Fig. 6 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a modification of the invention; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective of the lifting element embodied'in the construction disclosed in Fig. 6.
Referring to the invention in'detail a conventional jack 5 whose lifting standard 6 is formed with a rectangular head or plate 7 is provided.
A jack standard extension is provided for cooperation with the lifting standard 6 comprising a vertically extending bar 8 having or other suitable fastening 14 is engaged with l ng l ment is to belocated e ow' e g perend of the bar. .8. Y f
a longitudinal groove 9 in its inner face-and Ywhichextends the entire length of the bar.
7 -A vertically adjustable shank 104fis in the groovei) and is formed with bevell'ed-ribs 10 on one pair of its opposite faces andwhich are slidably fitted in \I-shaped grooves 11 inthe parallel walls of the, groove 9.
I, .Forthe purpose of holding the shank 10 at predetermined points of adjustment this shank and the bar 8 are provided with lon- 16 9 gitudinally 'alinedi registering transverse openings 12 andl3; hen the shank 10. has been raised .to a predeterlnined height alscrew the registering openings 12 andl3. .5
v a 5A; lifting element is provided consisting .of cross :sectmnally rectangular shank 1; 15
formed with a depending ear 16. A'forwardly extending hook element 17 is formedwith one side of the ear 16 :whichhookelement is adapted. to engage beneath the upper shackle bolt ofzthe automobile as shown in Fig; {i .As illustrated in Fig. ,5, the upper face of the h ook element 17 is recessed asindicated at 18. Normally received in the recess is. an orna- 1'4"? Inental'plate 19, one :endof which is secured to the hook element bya suitable fasteningQO. The ornamental plate19 is for the purpose of adding to the appearancev of the device when it is on sale in that it eooperateswith the other 9 parts of the lifting element in giving the'latter theappearanceof anelephants head. 1 In usethe shank-15 is received in any one of a plurality, [of rectangular transverse openings 21 with thehook element projecting forward- 3 ly from the shank 1Q. A setof rectangular transverse openings 22 are formed in. the .bar 8 for the reception of the shank 15 ,whenzthe v w. -99 f I preventing the load .from accidentally slipping from the lifting element a' flexible element 23 is carried by the ear116 and is adapted to be passed, around the shacklebolt as disclosedinFig. 4. The, free end of thislfiexible element carries a fastening 23 adapted to be .re'ceivedin an opening 24%. in the ear 16.: In order toholdfthelifting element against. accidentalv longitudinal movement, the rear end of. the shank 15 is 1 While a rear flange 29 depends from .therear. edge of the plate 27. Two opposite edges of the lifting head 7 are held between the flange 29 and a U-shaped fastening 30 which as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 extends through open ings 31 in the plate 2Z-and; projects below the lifting head 7. The U-shaped fastening 30 is carried on a chain 32 which has one end anchored to'an eye 33 attached to the lowerend of the shank 10 Oppositely extending set screws 34; are thre'adedly engaged with-the flanges 28 and engage opposite sides ofthe standard 6. It will be thus seen that the set screws 34, removablefasten ing 30 and flange 29 cooperate to rigidljr and removably' hold the jack extension on thelifti'ng standard of the jack. I p
Dirt or other foreign matter may lodge between the shank 10 and walls of the'groove 9 and prevent free movementof the shank.
To overcome thiscondition an expansible coil holes of said other set.
movement in two directions, and a removable fastening passing through the plate and contacting the side of said jack standard opposite said other flange and serving therewith to hold the plate against movement in two other directions.
v 2,2, vA -lifting jack extension comprising telescopically arrangedmembers having two sets of cross sectionally dissimilar holes, means of a cross section to suit one of the sets, being insertible in a pair of holes of said one set thus securing the members and holding all holes of the other set in registration, and aliftingelement cooperating with said jack extension, said element having a shank .of .a crosssectionsuiting the other set of holes; said shank fitting a selected pair of MAX DWORK.
