Description
Se t. 12, 1933. w. c. VOGELPOHL GRAVE MARKER Filed Nov.
Patented Sept. 12, 1933 UNITED STATES P FQ FWE GRAV R William 0. Vo gelpohl, Belleville, n1.
' Application N vember 30, 1931 Serial No. 578,073
2 Claims. (01. 4 42415) a grave marker in which all of the various parts,
above enumerated, may be formed'of sheet metal and may be assembled easily and quickly without the use of complicated tools.
A still further object is to provide a grave marker of the above described type which will be formed of a few simple, durable and inexpensive parts which will not easily get out of order.
.With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed it being unwithout departing from the spirit or sacrificing view of my, improved device with the bouquet holder or bracket broken away, and b v Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing in which like in the various views, 10 designates ananchor or ground stake which is preferably formed of sheet metal bent to provide a channel, the top of which 7 is expanded, as best shown in Fig. 2, to provide a substantially curved plate 11. In further carrying out the invention, I provide a bouquet bracket 12 comprising a substantially Z -shaped length of strip metal 13, one leg of which'is passed into 5 the channel of the ground stake 10. and thence bent downwardly along the web of the channel between the flanges thereof, as best shown in Fig. 2, a bolt 14 being passed through the flanges.
at the bight of the length'of strip metal to sup port the bracket at a desired height on the ground stake. A'cotter pin 15 is passed also through the" suitable connectors may be used, if desired. It will be observed that a pair of flanges 21 and 22 plateand underlie the respective flanges 21 and 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation 0f the "side'of. the back plate, are preferably providedgo characters of reference designate similar parts metal backing the ends and top edges of which web of the ground stake and through the lower end of the bracket to removably secure the bracket in place, this cotter pin coacting withapair of'lips16' which are struck from theflanges of J I the channeled ground stake and overlie the lower portion of the bracket to removably' secure the bracket in place. Asubstantially U-shaped length 17 of strip metal straddles the 'zfshapedlength ofstripmetal 1:3 and is riveted thereto-,as shown at 18. A bouquet holder,- such as-a Masonglass f jar, may obviously be inserted between the plate 11 of the ground stake and the upstanding free ends of the U-shaped and Z-shaped lengths of strip metal. b In further carrying out the invention, I provide m comprisinga plate 19 of sheet metal which is arranged transversely across the plate 11 of the,
ground stake and will be removably secured thereto by means of a pair of vertically arranged cotter pins 20.which are passed through suitable registering openings in both plates. Rivets may also be used in lieu of the cotter pins, or other are bent inwardly from the upper edge of the back plate 19; It :will also be observed that a pair offianges 23 and 24 are struck from the back 22. Also, a pair of flanges 25 and 26 are bent 0' from the bottom edge "of the back plate 19 to underlie the flanges 23 and 24.
The vertically alined flanges 21 and 23, on one with square openings 27 to receive the staff of p a flag 28, the staff being supported upon the corresponding underlying, impe'rforate flange 25, as
shown in Figjl. Y
Thev vertically alinedjflanges 22 and 24, on the opposite side of the back plate, are preferably provided with registering square openings 28 to receive the staff of an emblem 29 or other or-' ganization insignia, the bottom of the staff being supported. upon the corresponding; underlying flange or 1edge'26. f v r In furth'ercarrying out the invention, I pro- .vide a'name plate holder comprising a sheet are bentinwardly over the backing toprovide an m5 upper retaining flange 31' and, end retaining .flan'ges 32, as best shown in Fig. 1. The metal I backing is preferably 'removably-seouredto the back plate 19 by cotter pins 33 arranged on oppoo site sidesof the ground stake 10; However, other pins overlying the front face of the sheet, as bestv sheets may be employed to suitably protect the data card. The. data card and cover sheet are preferably mounted in place by slipping the same upwardly between the retaining flanges 32 until in contact with the top retaining flange 31 whereupon a pair of cotter pins 36 may be passed'f through suitable openings in the; backing and in the back plate 19 to engage the bottom edge of the sheet and card with the heads of the cotter shown in Figs. '1 and 3. 1
' From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a grave marker embodying a ground stake upon which a bouquet holder or bracket is removably secured, that also there are disposed on opposite sides of the bouquet bracket suitable brackets for receiving a flag and organization emblem or other identifying insignia, and
" that there is also included .in the assembly. an
identification card holder.
- Since the parts are all formed of sheet metal,
long life and durability of the marker will be insured while decreasedcost of manufacture will be promoted so that markers may be turned out in quantity for military graves, or the like, at minimum cost.
What is claimed is,
1. A grave marker including a ground stake, a back plate carried thereby, means extending through said plate and the stake detachably connecting the plate thereto and removable forwardlythroughthe plate, and a metal backing carried by said back plate and overlying the forward ends of said means to limit said means against accidental displacement, said backing being pro- .Vided with means to receive an identification card.
2. A grave marker including a ground stake, a back plate carried thereby, fastening devices extending through the plate and stake detachably connecting the plate thereto, said fastening devices being removable forwardly through the plate, a metal backing carried by the back plate and overlying the forward ends of said fastening devices, and fastening devices extending through said backing and back plate detachably connecting the backing thereto, said fastening devices being removable forwardly throughthe backing and said backing being provided with means to receive an identification card overlying the forward ends of the latter fastening devices limiting the latter. fastening devices against accidental displacement.
