Definitions

  • This invention is for improvements in or relating to typewriters and is concerned with typewriters of the kind comprising a framework housing the type mechanism, including the type bars and operating levers, which framework has a top member at least partially covering the type mechanism. Generally this top member carries the platen and the ribbon spools.
  • One object of the present invention is to render the type mechanism within the framework more readily accessible and the invention comprises a typewriter of the kind described, characterized in that the top member of the framework is readily movable away from the main part of the frame, for
  • the top member of the framework is hinged to the main part of the frame about an axis parallel to that of the platen and at the rear side of the framework and spring-operated latches are preferably provided for retaining the top member of the frame in the normal closed position.
  • these latches comprise levers pivoted on the main part of the framework and formed with cam slots engaging studs carried by the top member.
  • the studs are eccentrically mounted and are provided with means for adjustment in order to ensure that the latches shall firmly hold the top member in the closed position by reason of the cam slots of the latch levers.

  • the top-member 14 of the framework carrying the platen carriage indicated at 15 and spools 16 is hinged at the rear side to the main part 10 of the framework by-means of two hinges 17 one on each side of the framework.
  • each' consists of a lug 19 depending from the top member of the frame and located in a recess 20 provided in the rear wall of the main part 10 of the framework by means of a pivot pin 21 screw-threadedin the'lug and having a bearing in. the main frame.
  • the depending lug 19 is formed with an extension 22 which abuts against a stop 23 provided on the main frame 10 in order to limit the opening movement of the top member'l l.
  • top member 1 1 of the framework is retained in the normally closed position bymeans of spring-operated latches 18 one-on each sideof the framework near the front.
  • the top member 14 of the framework is provided with depending lugs 25 each carrying a transverse screwthreaded stud 26, this stud having a cylindrical head 27 and being secured by nuts 28.
  • the latches each comprise a lever 29 pivoted by means of a stud 30 on the main part 10 of the framework and formed with an open-ended cam slot 31.
  • the lever 29 is urged to the closed position of the latch by means of a-tension spring 32, and is provided with an operating knob 33 projecting through a slot 34 in the main framework to the outer side thereof.
  • a stop 39 serves to limit the range of movement of the lever.
  • the lever 29 In the. open position of the top member the lever 29 assumes an approximately vertical position bearing against the stop 39 un-' der the action of the spring 32.
  • the end ofthe lever is formed with a striking surface 36 and in the closing movement of the top member the head27 of the stud 26 bears upon this surface and deflects the lever against the action of the spring 32 until the stud head is opposite the open end of the slot 31 as shown in Figure 7.
  • the lever 29 is then moved by the spring 32 and the slot 31 passes over the stud to hold the top member of the framework in the closed position.
  • the slot 31 in the lever 29 is so constructed that the radial dimension from the pivot 21 of the lever decreases slightly from the open end in order to exert a wedging action on the stud head 27 to hold the top member firmly in the closed position. Furthermore, in order to ensure close fitting of the latch, the head 27 of the stud 26 is slightly eccentric and the position of the head may thus be adjusted by rotation of the stud.
  • each of these studs is carried in a boss-40 formed with the top member of the framework.
  • Each stud 37 (see Figure 8) is provided with a collar 41 and a compression spring 42between the collar, and a web 43 in the boss, so that the stud is springpressed against the type mechanism.
  • the stud is also provided with a retaining collar 44.
  • topmember of the framework is readily moved, onreleasing the latches by means of the operating knobs 33, from the normally closed position, as indicated in Figure 1, to the open position, as shown in Figure 2, to
  • the type mechanism 12 can alsobe removed as a unit from its normal position in the framework without any difficulty.
  • the invention is not restricted to the particular construc tion hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  • the invention may be applied to typewriters as described in specification No. 257,660 in '65 which the typemecha-nismis supported on runners within the framework and is movable forwardly on these runners to permit the type mechanism to be withdrawn from the front of the machine.
  • the removal of the type mechanism in this construction requires somewhat adept handling, in order to avoid fouling of parts of the type mechanism with the framework.
  • the type mechanism may be'removed from the machine with the utmost ease.
  • a typewriter the combination of a framework, bearing members within said framework, type mechanism removably mounted within said framework and supported-on said bearing members, a top member at least partially covering said type mechanism, a hinge connection between said top member and said framework, locking means for retaining the top member in the closed position and hearing members on said top. member and en-.
