WILLIAM J. H. KAPPE,
0F QUINCY, IL LIN OIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,440, dated May 8, 1877; application filed November 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. H. KAPPE, of Quincy, in the county of Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings:
The invention relates to an improvement in egg-cases, and consists in the devices hereinafter-more fully described.
The object of the invention is to provide a case, which, when not in use, can be folded into a portable form.
Figure l is a central vertical longitudinal section of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the line l 2 of Fig. 1. y
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bottom of the case, to the sides of which are secured the horizontal cleats B, and to the ends the horizontal cleats D, the latter being higher than the former by about the thickness of the side of the case. To the cleats B are hinged the sides E, the ends F being similarly secured to the cleats D. Thus, when the sides E are folded inward, the ends F may be folded flat upon them.
For the purpose of preserving the ends and sides of the case erect, the former are provided with the vertical cleats H to sustain the ends of the sides, the hooks l and staples L being placed at the upper corners of the sides and ends in such position that they may be engaged.
The cover M consists of a piece of material of suitable size, and is provided at each end with a cleat, N, so distanced as to fit over the upper edges of the ends of the case. One of these cleats is provided with the loop P, which incloses the pin B or T placed, respectively, in recesses in the cleats D and B, according as the case is erected or folded. The opposite cleat N is furnished with the spring-catch V to t over the notch W or X placed, respectively, in recesses in the cleats D and B, according as the case is erected or folded. Thus the cover retains itself in place when the case is erected, and when folded holds its parts in a compact form.
I do not claim the fastening devices shown in certain Letters Patent, No. 66,183, granted June 25,1867, for an improvement in fruit crates; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
The cover M, provided With the inlet-spring I catch V, and the loop P, in combination with the bottom A, provided with the cleats D, having the notch X and pin T, substantially as specified. In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in egg-cases, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of October, 1876.
