IMPROVEMENT IN TlRE-TlGHTENERS,

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,300, dated May 1, 1877 application filed April 4, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O. F. A. FAULKNER, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Tightener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

, My invention relates to an improvement in machines for tightening wheels; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the felly can be lifted off the shoulder of the spoke, and a collar inserted, and thereby tightening the felly in position.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

0. represents a vertical bar, of suitable size and thickness, which has the flanges 0 formed along two of its edges, and the nut or nuts d formed, or otherwise secured, to the back at its upper end. Rigidly fastened to two of its sides, at its lower end, are the two oval pieces 6, which form a clasp to straddle over the spoke, and which have a series of holes in their outer ends to receive the pivot-bolt g of the cam h. The bolt 9 is taken out, the cam removed, and then the spoke inserted between the pieces, when the cam is restored to place, and then turned so as to clasp the spoke so tightly that the machine cannot be moved. Detachably fastened between the rear ends of the pieces e by means of a pin, t, is the post j, which has its lower end so shaped as to fit the hub on which it is to rest. By means of the series of holes made through this post j the machine may be lengthened or shortened to any desired degree, and thus adapted to wheels of all sizes. Fitting over the sides of, and sliding up and down on, the bar a, is the jack l, which is open on its front side to take in the sides of the spoke, and which is kept straight by the flanges c. The upper end of this jack is bifurcated, and so shaped as to fit under the felly on two sides of the spoke. On the backof this jack is formed a nut, 0, corresponding to the one d, and working in these nuts is the right and left hand screw n, by means of which thejack is raised and lowered. By turning this screw thejack may be made to raise the felly entirely above the shoulder on the spoke, when a collar can be placed thereon, and thus keep the felly pressed outward.

Having thus described my invention, I claim--- 1. The combination of the clasp e and removable cam h, whereby the machine is held in position, substantially as shown.

2. The post j, provided with a series of holes, in combination with the bar a, whereby the machine can be lengthened or shortened, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the bar a, jack l, screw n, clasps c, and cam h, substantially as shown.
