H. J. -SCHMELSLRhv ONGULESS ULTIVATOR.
Patented Feb WITJV'ESSES UNITEDA STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY J. soIIMEIsER, or BURLINGTON, IOWA.
' ToNGuELEss CULTIVATOVR.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357.235, dated February 8, 1 887.
Application filed October 30, 1885.
Serial No. 181.353. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
arched axle and a wheel; and the object of my invention is to give a free vibrating lateral Inotion to the wheel on the axle. I accomplish this by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a full view of my inven tion from one side, one wheel being removed. Fig. 2 represents a lateral cross-section of the skein, wheel, and coupling. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of one plow-beam and its connections, looking from the inside. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail viewsk of the skein and standard. v
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the arched axle of a cultivator.
a and a are the two parts of a double skein, having shoulders a and rims r r. `These two skeins are bolted together by screw-bolts, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The double skein aand a has passing through itself afourcornered perforation, a3., corresponding to the sizeof the axle A,which perforation is widened at each end of the double skein horizontally, (see b and b in Fig. '4 of the drawngs,) so as to admit of a lateral movement to and. fro of the wheel on the'axleAwhen the same passes through the perforation, as illustrated by the dotted representation of the wheel in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The four-cornered perforation Vin the double skein a and a is in the middle of the skein of the exact size of the axle A, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawin s.
c represents the hub 'of the wheel B, which hub turns upon the double skein a and a', and is put in place by unfastening the bolts heretofore mentioned, which pass through the double skein a and a', and hold them firmly together. The axle A is recessed at its end, so as to pass between shoulders a", and in this recess there is a perforation in the axle for pin b to pass through, by which pin it is held in place. To skein a and a is bolted the drawiron C, of the shape as illustrated in the drawings. Inside ofwheel B, and upon the axle A, there is fastened by means of a set-screw, x, the coupling D, which is in the shape of a universal joint, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Gimbal F of the universal joint is adj ustably fastened by a bolt, K, through slot 7L to clamp e, which clamp passes over the plowbeam E, 'as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Tlie gimbal F is provided with cogs, as shown in Fig. To the cross o of the universal joint D are loosely jointed, by bolt or otherwise, the supports g g', which supports are provided with lugs with cogs n, as shown in Fig. 6. These cogs mesh with m. Loosely jointed to plow-.beam E is the pronged standard S, of the shape as illustrated in the drawings by Fig. 5.
The operation of my invention is as follows: By means of the widened perforation in skein a a', wheel B is enabled by lateral motion to change the angle with its axle A from a right angle to. an oblique angle, and the object of having the double skein is to enable the hub c to be placed on said skein. The object of having the coupling D v fastened to axle A by set-screw x is to make the coupling adjustable. When the plow-beam E is lifted up, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l, the supports g g', by means of the meshing ofthe cogs at m and a, will be pressed to the ground, and willthus support the cultivator in its upright position. The prongs of the standard S will engage with the supports g g', and will thus give support to the plow-beam E. The small lugs p on support g' prevent standard S from slipping down. n
The object of having the draw-iron C in the shape as illustrated and fastened to both sides of the skein is to bring the draft on a line with the center of the wheel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The skeinsn a', having the four-cornered perforations a2 passing through them, and widened at b', in combination with the axle A, corresponding in size with such perforations, as set forth;
2. The skeins a a', having the four-cornered IOO when the beam is raised the supports fall,'as set forth.
5. The beam E, having the forked standards S S, and secured to the coupling O, the gimbal F, having the eogs m, and the supports g g, having the cogs n and lugs p p, all combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY J. soHMEIsER.
