Description

March 14, 1933. C, CATTANEO PRoPoRT1oNAL-D1v1DER Filed April l, 1929 l59@ ZZaizo,
INVENTOR zml ATTOR NEY Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UITED STATES CHARLES CATTANEO, OF SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT '.PROPORTIONAL DIVDER Application filed April 1, 1929. Serial No. 351,739.
This invention relates to calipers, the general object of the invention being to provide calipers having points at both of its ends, with means for adjusting the pivotal pointbetween the members so that the measurements taken from a model or the like can be increased or decreased according to scale, the invention being mainly designed for use by stone carvers, sculptors, modelers, etc.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like 29 or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the calipers.
Figure 2 is an edge view.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4i is a section on line %4 of Figure l.
In these views, A and B indicate the two members of the calipers, each member being 39 provided with an inwardly curved extremity l at each end thereof and the body of each member is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 2 through which passes a headed bolt 5 having a kerf in its head and a knurled nut 6 on its threaded end. A stem 7 is arranged on the outer face of each member and each stem has a ring-shaped end 8 through which the bolt passes and said stems pass through the eyes of the eye bolts 9, each of which passes through a part of each member and has a knurled nut 10 thereon which, when tightened, will cause the eye part to clamp the stem in adjusted position.
A From the foregoing it will be seen that by 5 loosening the nut 6 and the nuts 10, the pivotal bolt 5 can be adjusted in the slots 2 and then by tightening the nuts, the parts are held in adjusted position. Thus the calipers can be adjusted for enabling them to take various measurements from a model or the like either on an increased scale or decreased scale. Vhen a job is started, the calipers are adjusted to the scale desired and the nuts tightened to hold the parts in adjusted position. One end takes the measurements and the other end gives it according tothe scale. Y
Only one adjustment is necessary.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
`What I claim is l A pair of dividers comprising leg members each having a longitudinal slot, a headed bolt extending through the slots, the diameter of the bolt being equal to the transverse breadth of the slots, a nut threaded to the bolt, eye bolts extending through the members, rods slidable in the eye bolts and having apertured ends to receive said headed bolt and nuts threaded upon the eye bolts to lock said bolts against rotation relative to the members and to clamp the rods against the surfaces of the leg members.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CHARLES CATTANEO.
