ADJUSTABLE DRESS-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 191-8.
Application filed October 28, 1916. Serial No. 128,336. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. GRANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, county of Franklin, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Dress-Forms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, l1ke characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to adjustable dress forms of. that type which comprise a plurality of sections adjustable relative to each other and connecting devices for connecting the adjacent sections and holding them in their relative adjusted positions. A type of dress form which is now commonly used is one in which the'body portion has a shelllike formation and is divided into a plurality of sections which are connected to each other by fastening devices comprising a slotted strap secured at one end to one section and overlying an adjacentsection and a clamping screw secured to the other section and extending through the slot of the strap and provided with a clamping nut which clamps the slotted strap in adjusted position. While a connecting device of this type'will securely hold'the various sections of the form in their adjusted position when the clamping nuts are all set up tight, yet the operation of making an adjustment in the position of any section involves first reaching into the interior of the form and loosening the various clamping nuts that hold the section in position, moving the section into its adjusted position, and'then reaching intothe form again and tightening up the clamping nuts on the various clamping screws. This operation is more or less laborious, and, moreover, if one or more of theclamping nuts are not properly tightened, the corresponding connecting device will not hold and the section of the form may be accidentally moved out of its correct position when the form is being used.
The object of my present invention is to provide an improved connecting device for connecting adjacent sections of a dress form, which device comprises a strap connected to one section of the form and a clamping device on-the other section ofthe form which frictionally engages said strap with suflicient friction to hold" the form sections in proper" adjusted relation during any ordinary use to which the dress form is subjected while permitting said sections'tobe adjusted relative to each other upon the application of suflicient force. WVith my improved connecting device the operation of-adjusting any section of the dress form involves merely the act of moving said section :into its proper adjusted position by applying suflicient force thereto, the frictional clamping device permitting this to be done but yet holding the section securely in place when it has once been adjusted. I
'In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I will provide my-clamping' device with a clamping screw andnut so that the connecting device may be securely locked in any adjusted position, but it is not necessary to use this clamping screw and nut during the ordinary use to which the dress form is subjected.
In order to give an understanding of my present invention Ihave illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a body portion of a dress form having my improvements applied thereto; a
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing my connecting device looking from'the interior of the form;
Fig. 3 isa' section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line M, Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the frictional clamping device.
1 indicates generally a dress form-which may be divided into sections in any suitable way. The form herein shown is dividedhOriZOntally across the waist at 2 and is divided vertically to present the hip sections'3, 4 and'5 and is also divided to present the shoulder sections 6 and the neck sections 7. This particular Way of dividing the formfhowever, is not important so far as my invention is concerned, as my improved connecting device may be applied to dress forms divided in any other desirable way. Y
The sections of the dress form, however the latter is divided, are connected by connecting devices, each of which comprises a strap 8 that is secured to one of the dress form sections and a frictional clamping device secured to another dress form secthe latter yieldingly against the ribs, and means for clamping said arms against the strap.
4. A dress form divided to present a plurality of sections which are adjustable relative to each other, a strap secured to one section, a friction clamping member secured to an adjacent section and through which the strap slides, said clamping member including a sheet metal body portion presenting two ribs extending transversely of the strap and engaging one face thereof at separated points, and two clamping fingers integral with said body which engage the op posite face of the strap and hold the latter yieldingly against the ribs, a clamping screw secured to said body portion, and a clamping nut on the screw adapted to engage said arms and by which the clamping pressure thereof against the strap can be varied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification,
FRANK B. GRANGER.
