To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoncn M. MITCHELL, S12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap- W renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a tool for use in turning pipes or other threaded parts in coupling or uncoupling them, and its object is to provide a tool of this class which, while adapted to avoid abrading, crushing or otherwise injuring the part to be turned, will serve to obtain a powerful non-slipping grip on the same, may be readily applied to or removed therefrom, and will be capable of a wide range of easily effected adjustments. a
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench; Figs. 2 and 3 are front and rear elevations thereof, the strap being removed in Fig. 3; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view'of the strap-holding portion of the leverage member, the movable parts 2' and n thereof being removed; Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views of such parts.
The leverage member includes the body part or frame a, which in the present case is fork-shaped, and the handle I), which at c is threaded and tapped into the neck or yoke cl of the part a so as to turn freely therein when the locknut e thereon, adapted to bind against said neck or yoke, is released. The arms c of the part a are connected by the rigid cross-sectionally triangular abutment 7, which is preferably concave on the side thereof adjacent the neckor yoke (Z but flat on the opposite side, the latter side being inclined upwardly from front to rear; they may also be strengthened by the integral web a connecting them at the front. Said arms have below and above the abutment 7, respectively, the pairs of longitudinal slots 9 h. Said leverage member also includes the jaw 2' fitted between the arms a of the part a and having opposite studs j which are received by the slots 9; the face of the jaw adjoining the abutment f is convex and at its opposite side it has a circumferentially grooved stud is received by a socket Z in the end of the handle I) with which, by virtue of a screw m tapped into the handle and engaging in said groove, it is swiveled. In using the tool, having secured end 79 of the strap against slippage by extending it through the frame at around the triangular abutment f, then screwing up the handle to cause the said end to be gripped by and between the jaw vi and the abutment and finally binding the handle against turning by setting the lock-nut 6 against the frame, the strap 79 is passed around, and formed with the bight g to embrace, the pipe A to be turned, whereupon its other end 79 is eX-- tended between the head at and the end 79 of the strap and drawn up tight, in such manner, however, that the leverage member will stand substantially perpendicular to the pipe. The relation of the thus-assembled leverage and strap members to the pipe at this time is shown in Fig. 1. When the leverage member is now turned in the direc-, tion of the arrow in Fig. 1, the first part of the movement is amovement lever-fashion of said member on the pipe as a fulcrum and relatively thereto, resulting in head a being forced toward the abutment and the strap ends being so securely clamped by and between them as to effectively prevent slippage of either; when head a ceases to yield further under the pressure continued moveably'provide some means to attach the strap member to the handle member so that it may always be kept connected therewith and the strap may be taken up or let out to suit pipes having diiferent diameters, such as the means 7 i, I do'not wishto be limited to the employment of any such means auxiliary to I the means 7' a, which it will be obvious effects clamping pressure on the end 79 as well'as the end 79 of the strap. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire 'to se cure by Letters Patent is 1 1. 111a wrench, a leverage member having 'means'to hold against slippage both ends of a strap, said means including an abutment and a head-freely movablejtoward and from the abutment and forming with the latter a clamp, in combination with such strap, the
latter havinga bight therein resting against the side of said head remote from the abut- -ment*a-nd adapted to grip the part to be turned and also having one of its ends interposed between saidhead and abutment and adapted to be clamped thereby.

In a Wrench, 'a leverage member having means to hold against slippage both ends of a strap, said means including an abutment and a head freely movable rectilineally toward and from the abutment and forming with the latter a clamp, in combination with such strap, the latter having a bight therein resting against the side of said head remote from the abutment and adapted to grip the part to be turned and also having one of its ends interposed between said head and abutment and adapted to be clamped thereby.

In a wrench, a leverage member having means to hold against slippage both ends of a strap, said means including an abutment and a head freely movable toward and from the abutment and forming with the latter a clamp, in combination with such strap, the latter having a bight therein resting against the side of said head remote from the abutment and adapted to grip the part to be turned and also having both of its ends interposed between said head and abutment and adapted to be clamped thereby.

In a wrench, a leverage member having an abutment and a head movable toward and from the abutment and forming there with a clamp, in combination with a strap having one end thereof longitudinally adjustably secured to the leverage member and also having a bight resting against the side of said head remote from the abutment and adapted to grip the part to be turned, said strap having its other end interposed between said head and abutment and adapted to be clamped thereby.
5. In a wrench, a leverage member having an butment and a head movable toward and from the abutment and forming therewith a clamp, in combination with a strap having a bight resting against the side of said head remote from the abutment and adapted to grip the part to be turned and one of its ends interposed between said head and abutment and adapted to be clamped thereby, said member also having means, coactive with the abutment, to adjustably grip the other end of the strap.
